Diane's POV

The feeling refuses to leave me.

Even after I slide into the taxi and slam the door shut, even after the driver asks for my address twice and I answer like my mouth has a mind of its own, the uneasiness clings to my skin like sweat. Heavy. Sticky. Wrong.

I press my back against the seat and wrap my arms around myself. The cold from outside still lingers on my skin, mixing with the warmth of the car until everything feels suffocating.

"Madam... your address?" the driver asks again.

I blink slowly, then tell him.

The taxi pulls away from Conrad's building, the tall structure shrinking behind me in the rear window. I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding, my fingers drifting to my lips.

God.

Tonight is a disaster.

My mind replays everything: the wine, the tension, my stupid confession, the moment my hands... I squeeze my eyes shut, heat crawling up my neck.

Why do I always lose control around Conrad Beaumont?

I drag in a shaky breath and force myself to stare out the window. The city lights blur into streaks of gold and white. People move along the sidewalks, laughter drifting faintly through the glass, horns blaring occasionally.

Normal life. Normal people. So why do I feel like prey?

A prickle runs down my spine.

Slowly, I glance at the side mirror.

A black car sits two vehicles behind us. Nothing strange, right?

I shift slightly, pretending to adjust my purse while sneaking another look.

Still there. Same distance. Same steady speed.

My heart thumps harder.

Okay, Diane, relax. You just came out of an emotionally charged night. Your brain is playing tricks on you.

I swallow and force my gaze forward. One minute passes. Two.

The car is still there.

Cold dread creeps into my chest. I lean forward slightly, my voice low. "Please... can you take another route?"

The driver frowns through the mirror. "Another route?"

"Yes... just avoid the main road."

He shrugs and turns at the next junction.

My fingers dig into my dress as I watch the mirror again.

The black car follows.

My breath hitches.

"Stop... stop here," I say suddenly.

The driver slows near a small convenience shop glowing under bright fluorescent lights. I throw money at him and step out quickly, my heels clicking loudly against the pavement.

The cold night air slaps my face, but I barely feel it. My eyes scan the road as I pretend to check my phone, my chest rising and falling rapidly.

The black car slows as it approaches. My pulse pounds in my ears.

It drives past.

Doesn't stop. Doesn't slow further. Just keeps going.

I exhale shakily, leaning against the shop wall. Maybe I'm paranoid. Maybe the alcohol is still messing with my senses.

My phone buzzes in my hand.

Freaky Boss: Did you get home safely?

Of course not. I type quickly.

Me: I think someone was following me.

Three dots appear immediately.

Freaky Boss: Where are you?

Me: Small shop near my street.

Freaky Boss: Stay there.

My heart thuds.

I don't reply again. I just wait, staring at the road while pretending to scroll through messages. Every passing car makes my shoulders tense. Every shadow feels alive.

Five minutes later, a sleek, familiar car pulls up in front of me.

Conrad steps out.

The moment I see him, something inside me loosens. Relief floods my chest before I can stop it.

"What happened?" he asks, his voice low, his eyes scanning me from head to toe like he's checking for injuries.

"I... maybe nothing," I admit, hugging my arms tighter. "There was a black car behind my taxi. It followed when we changed routes."

His jaw tightens. "License plate?"

"I didn't check."

He glances down the road, his eyes sharp, calculating. For a moment, silence hangs between us, heavy and tense.

"Get in the car." He says finally.

"I can go home myself..."

"That wasn't a suggestion."

I roll my eyes, but my feet move anyway. The inside of his car smells faintly of leather and his cologne, dark, familiar, oddly comforting.

We drive in silence.

The quiet isn't awkward, just heavy. My mind keeps replaying the earlier events, and my cheeks burn again.

"You're quiet." He suddenly speaks

"So are you."

"I'm thinking."

"That's dangerous." I mutter.

A faint smirk tugs at his lips. "Still embarrassed about your attack on my dignity?"

"Oh my God." I groan, covering my face. "Please forget tonight."

"Impossible." He says calmly.

I peek at him through my fingers. "You're evil."

"I've been told."

Silence returns, but it feels softer now.

When we reach my apartment building, I hesitate before opening the door. My hand rests on the handle, but I don't move.

"Conrad..." I say quietly.

He glances at me.

"Do you ever feel like everything around you is collapsing and you're just pretending to be fine?"

The question slips out before I can stop it.

His gaze lingers on me longer than usual. Something unreadable flickers in his eyes.

"Yes." He says finally.

The honesty surprises me.

I nod slowly. "Tonight, I wasn't just drunk. I was scared. About money... about my life... about you."

"Me?" His brow lifts slightly.

"You confuse me." I whisper.

His jaw tightens.

I laugh weakly. "One minute you're kind, the next you're terrifying, and somehow, I still feel safe around you. That makes no sense."

He doesn't respond immediately. The car fills with quiet tension again.

Finally, he says, "Maybe you just stop pretending when you're around me."

My breath catches.

The words settle deep inside my chest, heavy and warm.

I open the door quickly before I can say anything else. My heels touch the pavement, the cool air brushing against my skin.

"Thank you... for coming." I murmur.

"Lock your door." He says simply.

I nod and walk toward my building, feeling his gaze on my back until I disappear inside.

Upstairs, I lean against my apartment door after locking it, my heart still racing.

Tonight changes something. I don't know what yet.

But the uneasiness, the feeling of being watched, returns as I glance out my window.

Across the street, a dark car idles under a broken streetlight.

My breath hitches.

Because this time, it doesn't drive away.

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 31

Diane's POVIs it only me, or is Conrad's scandal fading already? With the scandal handled by his PR team, none of the trouble falls on him, and it's been fading away as quickly as it spread. Conrad would love it. It's all he ever wanted. The scandal fading away means an end is coming to our contract sooner than I expected. I haven't gotten attached to him, only to all the things he has to offer me in return for accepting to do this with him."Are you even with me?" Conrad's voice echoes."Yes. Yes, I'm with you." I reply, batting my eyelashes. I didn't mean to be carried away with my thoughts.I'm worried for myself. The contract ending means I'll go back to being a stripper in one of the most patronized clubs in the city. That isn't me saying I'm not used to that life anymore.Conrad pays me so well, and I've gotten comfortable with being paid so well. To get the amount he pays me, I'd have to work in the club all nigh

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 30

Conrad's POVClubbing has become one of my least favorite things to do. It could be because I've been occupied with work lately; it can't be because I'm worried there might be a repeat of the last time. Here I am in front of a club, one of the private clubs in the city. I drove myself down here because it feels like I'm losing my spark, and the best way to reignite it seems to be clubbing.Everyone knows me to be the bubbly type and a nightlife lover, and I don't want that to change. I have a cap on my head, and since it's late in the night, no one should be able to recognize me."Time to unwind." I coo, and proceed to step inside.I left all my problems to Ward to handle, and it was the right decision. He has a team dedicated to solving all my problems, and it has been like that for the longest time. Whoever is stalking Diane will be caught soon. She got herself a new number, and it was my idea. I gave her strict instructions not to give anyone besides me her new contact, not her col

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 29

Diane's POVI step into the office breathing heavily. I'm two minutes late to work. I did all I could to avoid it, and that included running from the compound straight to the second floor in heels.Conrad won't go easy on me for being late. He doesn't care to know that I went to bed late, all because I was scared someone might break down my door and come for me after he left.I drop my laptop on my table and try to catch my breath. I don't look in a mirror, but I know my hair is a mess already. I ran without putting it into consideration."Mr. Conrad would like to see you." A colleague walks up to me and says. It's bad that I don't know her name, and it's like that with the rest of them too. Months in this office and I'm still a stranger.I smooth down my skirt, pat my hair twice, and give up on both. Then I pick up my phone from my bag. I already know the words Conrad will speak to me when I show up in front of him, which could be why I'm not fidgety. They won't be nice, I know. I tr

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 28

Diane's POV"Somehow, the footage we need to find out about the culprit is missing.""How is that possible?" I'm quick to ask."Whoever the culprit is, he's good at things like this."The CCTV footage would have helped us get to the bottom of the matter. I relied on it. The culprit decided to stay one step ahead of us, and that was wise of them."I have a feeling whoever is behind this is someone who knows you and me." I tell him."You might be right and you might be wrong."I heave a deep sigh that isn't of relief. Until we find out the identity of the culprit, my life is at risk. I can't say the same for Conrad because he has bodyguards looking after him.Ever since he dropped me off at work, I've been thinking about who could be behind this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps Conrad is right, and this has to do with him and not me."Don't worry about anything. I have things under control." He interrupts the silence. He definitely says that so I can feel better."I ha

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 27

Diane's POVWhoever wants to make my life a living hell more than it already is, I have no idea. I can't stop thinking about who could be behind the anonymous messages, but I have no clue yet.I roll from one end of the bed to the other. I find it hard to fall asleep, and it could be because I know someone has been monitoring me closely, and the person sure doesn't have good plans for me."I have to make sure I lock the door." I mutter and get off the bed. Some minutes ago, I checked the door and found it properly locked, and I'm on my way to check it again. It's safe to say I'm scared of what might be coming. This might be a good time to have my friend come stay with me for a few days. Her company might make me feel safe. I get to the door and check again. It's properly locked. To get to work on time tomorrow, I must sleep early, but what do I do when sleep isn't forthcoming? Drinking to a stupor is definitely not an option. I don't want a hangover tomorrow.I look all around while r

Conrad's POV"You came at the right time." I say to Ward as he walks closely behind me."I do all the time. I have a feeling I'm about to save your ass again like I always do." He responds.I sit on the sofa in the living room. I had a long day at work and I know I ought to go straight to my room for a shower, but there's something important I want to share with Ward.He sits next to me, his eyes fixed on the television screen. My team and his are playing today, which must be the main reason he came, but I'm not in the mood for banter tonight."You kept me waiting at your door. I thought you'd close from work by 5pm. Did you go somewhere after work today?""Yes." I coo."I told you to give me one of your spare keys, but you refused. If you had, I wouldn't have had to wait at the door for hours." He mutters. He's my best friend, but I'm not willing to give him unrestricted access to my space for no personal reason. I take off my suit and take a deep breath. It feels like the right thin
