Chapter 24

Conrad's POV

I shouldn't have let her leave alone last night.

The thought sits heavily in my chest as I stare at the morning skyline through the wide glass walls of my office. Cars crawl like ants below, people rushing to places that probably matter less than they think.

But my mind isn't on business. It's on Diane: her flushed face, her trembling hands, the way she looked at me like she was both terrified of me and strangely safe around me.

And that moment...

I exhale sharply and drag a hand through my hair.

Focus.

I turn from the window and walk back to my desk just as my office door knocks twice.

"Come in."

The door opens slowly, and Diane steps inside.

My gaze pauses on her longer than it should.

She looks different today. Not physically; she still wears her usual office outfit, a fitted blouse tucked into a pencil skirt, her hair neatly pulled back. But there's something softer about her posture. Something cautious.

"Good morning, sir." She says quietly. Her voice carries a hint of awkwardness.

Last night lingers between us like an invisible wall.

"Morning." I reply, settling into my chair. "You're early."

"I had files to prepare." She says, stepping forward to place a stack of documents on my desk.

Her fingers brush the wood carefully, avoiding any accidental contact with me. The small distance doesn't go unnoticed.

I lean back slightly, studying her. "Did you sleep?"

She hesitates. "Enough." She replies finally.

Lie.

Her eyes look tired, slightly swollen, like she spent part of the night overthinking, or crying.

My jaw tightens unconsciously.

She turns to leave after setting everything down, but I speak before she reaches the door.

"Diane."

She freezes.

Slowly, she turns back to me. "Yes, sir?"

"You felt like someone was watching you last night."

Her shoulders stiffen immediately.

So she remembers too.

"I... probably imagined it." She says quickly. "I was still tipsy and..."

"Look at me."

She does. Reluctantly.

"You don't get paranoid easily." I say. "If you felt watched, there's a reason."

Her lips press together.

Silence stretches between us for a moment. Then she sighs softly. "Maybe. I just felt uncomfortable when I got home. Like someone was outside. But when I checked, there was nothing."

My eyes narrow slightly.

I don't like that. Not one bit.

"From today," I say calmly, "you'll leave work with the company driver."

Her brows furrow immediately. "Sir, that's not necessary..."

"It is."

"I don't need special treatment." She insists. "People already think I'm different because I work directly under you."

Her words carry frustration and a hint of embarrassment.

I lean forward slightly. "This isn't about treatment. It's about safety."

Her gaze softens for a brief second before she looks away. "I'll be fine."

"You don't get to decide that alone."

She blinks slowly, surprised by the firmness in my voice.

Silence fills the room again.

Finally, she nods once. "Okay... sir."

Something inside my chest eases slightly.

"Good." I say, then gesture toward the files. "Meeting in thirty minutes. Stay."

She walks back toward the desk and begins explaining the documents, her voice steady but softer than usual.

As she speaks, I find myself watching her more than the papers.

The way her brows furrow when she concentrates. The way her fingers move nervously when she thinks I'm not looking. The faint flush on her cheeks whenever our eyes accidentally meet.

Last night clearly affected her. It affected me too.

Halfway through her explanation, she pauses suddenly. "Sir... about yesterday..."

My gaze lifts to her face immediately.

She swallows. "I'm sorry again. For everything. I crossed a line."

Her voice is small, sincere.

I study her for a moment before responding. "You were drunk."

"That's not an excuse."

"No." I agree calmly. "But it explains things."

She nods slowly, her eyes dropping to the desk.

"I don't want you to feel uncomfortable working with me." She adds quietly.

A faint smirk touches my lips. "You think you can make me uncomfortable?"

Her eyes flick up, slightly offended. "Everyone has limits, sir."

"That wasn't my limit." I say evenly.

"You moaned." She says.

"I didn't." I say quickly, rushing my words.

She glances up. "Then what was that?"

I tilt my head. "A groan. You literally..."

Her breath hitches slightly, and I pause, then shake my head.

"Never mind."

Silence thickens again.

She clears her throat quickly and returns to the documents, but the tension between us has shifted, less awkward, more aware.

When the meeting time approaches, she gathers the files and walks toward the door.

"Diane."

She stops again. "Yes?"

"Next time you feel unsafe," I say quietly, "you call me first. Not after."

Her eyes widen slightly.

For a moment, she looks like she wants to argue, but instead she nods.

"Okay." She whispers.

She leaves the office, and I watch the door close slowly behind her.

My fingers tap lightly against the desk.

Something is off. The way she described last night, the uneasiness, the fear she tried to hide, it doesn't sit right with me.

I pick up my phone and dial security.

"Review the cameras around her apartment building." I say calmly. "Last night between midnight and two a.m."

"Yes, sir."

"And increase monitoring around the office entrance. Quietly."

"Yes, sir."

I hang up and lean back in my chair, staring at the ceiling for a moment.

Because whether she realizes it or not, something is changing. Between us. And around us.

And I have no intention of letting anything, or anyone, hurt her while she works under me.

Not on my watch.

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 31

Diane's POVIs it only me, or is Conrad's scandal fading already? With the scandal handled by his PR team, none of the trouble falls on him, and it's been fading away as quickly as it spread. Conrad would love it. It's all he ever wanted. The scandal fading away means an end is coming to our contract sooner than I expected. I haven't gotten attached to him, only to all the things he has to offer me in return for accepting to do this with him."Are you even with me?" Conrad's voice echoes."Yes. Yes, I'm with you." I reply, batting my eyelashes. I didn't mean to be carried away with my thoughts.I'm worried for myself. The contract ending means I'll go back to being a stripper in one of the most patronized clubs in the city. That isn't me saying I'm not used to that life anymore.Conrad pays me so well, and I've gotten comfortable with being paid so well. To get the amount he pays me, I'd have to work in the club all nigh

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 30

Conrad's POVClubbing has become one of my least favorite things to do. It could be because I've been occupied with work lately; it can't be because I'm worried there might be a repeat of the last time. Here I am in front of a club, one of the private clubs in the city. I drove myself down here because it feels like I'm losing my spark, and the best way to reignite it seems to be clubbing.Everyone knows me to be the bubbly type and a nightlife lover, and I don't want that to change. I have a cap on my head, and since it's late in the night, no one should be able to recognize me."Time to unwind." I coo, and proceed to step inside.I left all my problems to Ward to handle, and it was the right decision. He has a team dedicated to solving all my problems, and it has been like that for the longest time. Whoever is stalking Diane will be caught soon. She got herself a new number, and it was my idea. I gave her strict instructions not to give anyone besides me her new contact, not her col

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 29

Diane's POVI step into the office breathing heavily. I'm two minutes late to work. I did all I could to avoid it, and that included running from the compound straight to the second floor in heels.Conrad won't go easy on me for being late. He doesn't care to know that I went to bed late, all because I was scared someone might break down my door and come for me after he left.I drop my laptop on my table and try to catch my breath. I don't look in a mirror, but I know my hair is a mess already. I ran without putting it into consideration."Mr. Conrad would like to see you." A colleague walks up to me and says. It's bad that I don't know her name, and it's like that with the rest of them too. Months in this office and I'm still a stranger.I smooth down my skirt, pat my hair twice, and give up on both. Then I pick up my phone from my bag. I already know the words Conrad will speak to me when I show up in front of him, which could be why I'm not fidgety. They won't be nice, I know. I tr

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 28

Diane's POV"Somehow, the footage we need to find out about the culprit is missing.""How is that possible?" I'm quick to ask."Whoever the culprit is, he's good at things like this."The CCTV footage would have helped us get to the bottom of the matter. I relied on it. The culprit decided to stay one step ahead of us, and that was wise of them."I have a feeling whoever is behind this is someone who knows you and me." I tell him."You might be right and you might be wrong."I heave a deep sigh that isn't of relief. Until we find out the identity of the culprit, my life is at risk. I can't say the same for Conrad because he has bodyguards looking after him.Ever since he dropped me off at work, I've been thinking about who could be behind this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps Conrad is right, and this has to do with him and not me."Don't worry about anything. I have things under control." He interrupts the silence. He definitely says that so I can feel better."I ha

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 27

Diane's POVWhoever wants to make my life a living hell more than it already is, I have no idea. I can't stop thinking about who could be behind the anonymous messages, but I have no clue yet.I roll from one end of the bed to the other. I find it hard to fall asleep, and it could be because I know someone has been monitoring me closely, and the person sure doesn't have good plans for me."I have to make sure I lock the door." I mutter and get off the bed. Some minutes ago, I checked the door and found it properly locked, and I'm on my way to check it again. It's safe to say I'm scared of what might be coming. This might be a good time to have my friend come stay with me for a few days. Her company might make me feel safe. I get to the door and check again. It's properly locked. To get to work on time tomorrow, I must sleep early, but what do I do when sleep isn't forthcoming? Drinking to a stupor is definitely not an option. I don't want a hangover tomorrow.I look all around while r

  • Trapped With My Ex Boss; An Enemy that Ruined Me.    Chapter 26

Conrad's POV"You came at the right time." I say to Ward as he walks closely behind me."I do all the time. I have a feeling I'm about to save your ass again like I always do." He responds.I sit on the sofa in the living room. I had a long day at work and I know I ought to go straight to my room for a shower, but there's something important I want to share with Ward.He sits next to me, his eyes fixed on the television screen. My team and his are playing today, which must be the main reason he came, but I'm not in the mood for banter tonight."You kept me waiting at your door. I thought you'd close from work by 5pm. Did you go somewhere after work today?""Yes." I coo."I told you to give me one of your spare keys, but you refused. If you had, I wouldn't have had to wait at the door for hours." He mutters. He's my best friend, but I'm not willing to give him unrestricted access to my space for no personal reason. I take off my suit and take a deep breath. It feels like the right thin
