***** "As long as you can make him pay." I bravely said between my cries. A playful grin appeared on his lips, amused by my pain. He was the devil, but I didn't care. It was a risk I was ready to take. "Anything, including giving yourself to the devil." He chirped That should have been a warning telling me to turn back, but instead, I nodded at him. "Only a devil can handle another devil." His grin grew wider, a laugh escaping his lips. Those evil lips parted, and each word left me more dumbfounded: "For starters, strip right here and now." My mouth fell agape taken back by his request. It was beyond my expectations; I was still lost in a dilemma when the devil spoke again. "I don't have all day, Mrs Romanov." The happiest day of a woman's life was meant to be the day she gets married to the love of her life and I thought it was true. I had never felt this genuinely happy in my life before, despite all the resistance of us being from rival mobs. Finally, I was getting married to Viktor, the Mafia boss of a rival Russian mob today. Although my marriage was not purely based on love, the main goal was to join two of the biggest Mafia underground associations. My fiance, Viktor, owned one of the richest and most dangerous Russian mobs; my father agreed to this marriage to seek his protection as our group, despite its large size, is nothing compared to Viktor's association. The soft organ melody echoed through the large sculptured walls of the old cathedral to the outside, it was loud enough to reach the environs. Stepping down from the car I made my way towards the large doors of the ancient cathedral. The doors swung open, and everyone's eyes were drawn to me, the beautiful bride. "May I?" Father approached me at the door to take me to the altar. "Of course father." I chimed at him with the brightest smile ever. Dad took his time to look at me, his eyes welling with tears that his little princess was finally getting married. "You look beautiful, Adelina." He said with a heavy voice, trying to hold back his tears. I hooked my hand with his arm and then took a deep breath. "Thank you, Papa." 'It's finally time, Adelina; you can do this.' I chanted encouraging words in my mind to control my nervousness. I gripped the bouquet of tulips and lilacs, which were my favourite flowers, and cold sweats formed around my fist. Dad's presence was reassuring. Everyone got on their feet to watch me proceed down the aisle, smiles brimming on their faces. Finally, my eyes gazed towards the altar, and there he was, standing tall and handsome as always. Our eyes met, and my heart skipped a beat. I clutched Father's arm, and Father gave an encouraging smile, sensing my nervousness. The bridal procession started as I made my way towards the altar; Viktor's eyes were on me the entire time, smiling brightly; his charming smile blurred away every other person I walked past towards the altar. The song changed, and every step I took forward felt heavy, telling me that this was a journey that would change my life for good. Finally, we arrived at the front; Dad released my arm and placed a soft kiss on my forehead before he made his way to Mother's side, who was crying her eyes out. Lorenzo, my elder brother and the family heir, was also with them; he gave me an encouraging smile. My heartfelt fluffy, seeing how my entire family was here for me. I inhaled a sharp breath, then turned towards Viktor, my groom, entranced by his sapphire eyes. "You look gorgeous," Viktor whispered into my ear immediately after I accepted his hand. A faint red blush made its way to my face. "Thank you. You are also handsome." I said my voice barely above a whisper. "I hope you are ready," Viktor whispered sensing my trembling hands. With the brightest smile I could pull off, my voice chirped. "I was born ready." Hand to hand we climbed the cathedral altar to meet the priest. The priest gave us a soft smile; then the music stopped; everyone got down on their seats except us. I turn to face Viktor face to face stretching my neck a bit because of his towering height and large frame. He was very handsome; my cheeks burned more, knowing he was mine. "Dear blessed beloved, we are here to witness the holy matrimony of our daughter Marino Adelina and our son Romanov Viktor...." The priest started the solemnization, the words faded in my ears, and all my attention was drawn to the smile on Viktor's face. My lips curved into a more beautiful smile. "Is there anyone here who has a reason why these two should not be joined in holy matrimony? Speak now or forever hold your peace." The priest asks. Viktor's blue eyes scanned the crowd that turned pin-drop silent; even if there was anyone who had something against my marriage, they would dare not speak, knowing how dangerous Viktor was. A breath of relief left my lips, seeing no one was crazy enough to ruin the wedding. Not only was it important to me but also to all the loyal members of Marino's mob. "Romanov Viktor, do you take Marino Adelina as your wife before God and man to forever join together for better or worse till your last days?" The priest asks Viktor, and for a slight second, complex emotions run across his blue eyes like he is hesitant. My heart started to beat fast, and my gut tightened, scared he would say no. Viktor slowly opened his mouth, and my anxiety took over, but the look disappeared, and he said two words more beautiful than I Love you. "I do." My smile widened with every fear that tortured me earlier being thrown out of the window. Viktor was also madly in love with me. That was the reason he did his best for this marriage to happen. The priest then turned towards my direction and repeated the same words. "Marino Adelina, do you take Romanov Viktor as your husband before God and man, for better or worse, until death do you part?" Grinning ear to ear I answered, "I do." Then a beautiful smile graced Viktor's lips with the crowd cheering us. We were finally married, and after that, we exchanged rings. The deal was done. “You may now kiss the bride.” Viktor's arm wrapped around my waist, and he pulled me closer; our lips met, sending sparks through my spine. Ignoring the crowd that was staring at us, he hungrily devoured my lips; desire coursed through my veins, making me crave more. When he parted away, my doe eyes looked at him hungrily because I wanted more, but this was not the place. God this was so embarrassing that I boldly kissed him like a starved beast in front of a crowd like this. My eyes went back to the audience, and my face turned scarlet. My family was now under Viktor's mob and I was his wife. Everyone got on their feet to clap and cheer for us. Viktor leaned towards me and whispered in a very low tone. "It is beautiful. Isn't it? This is just like the wedding you envision." His deep baritone drawled. My brows furrowed, wondering what he was talking about. I whipped my head to look back at him, and my smile fell when I saw his cold eyes, making it seem like the smile he had on his face earlier was just an illusion. "What do you mean Viktor? We finally got married and our groups are united." My voice shook with my grip on the flowers tightening till my knuckles turned white. My gut was telling me something about this was off; the wedding happened so smoothly that it felt like an illusion. "Yes, we are married, and the deal is done, meaning there is no need to keep up the act my goal has been achieved. You have no use for me anymore." All the blood from my face drained as a fright I had never felt before wrecked my gut. What does he mean? Dad sensed something was off with the way we were communicating and he had deep frown lines on his forehead. From the corners of my eyes, I could see his confused look as he jolted towards us. As if answering my question, everything happened so fast that it felt like a nightmare I could not keep up with. Viktor pulled out a gun and fired a bullet, silencing the entire hall. A scream echoed from my side. My eyes were drawn to the chaos, my knees immediately went weak. I fell to the ground when the image of my father's limp body on the floor came into my sight with my mother screaming and crying. Everything around me was grey, with every colour draining from my face. "Papa!!!!!" The most heartbreaking scream left my lips as my entire body trembled.ADELINA'S POV The flowers were for Lydia, call it main character syndrome or whatever, I thought it was for me. I was losing my mind. No one would send me flowers unless Viktor wanted to pull a sick joke on me. Sigh, but I was secretly disappointed tho. Which girl didn't like flowers and chocolate? Especially those chocolates that had cream fillings inside the wafers. Now I have a sudden craving for chocolate. It hurts to be single. While my mind was busy thinking about flowers and chocolate, as if I didn't have more serious issues in my life, Sophia kept on bugging Lydia about her mysterious man, but Lydia's lips were sealed. Lydia didn't assign any work to me, so I had to wait for her to finish whatever she was doing. "They are truly pretty," Lydia gushed for the hundredth time, making Sophia roll her eyes. "If you are not going to tell me who the guy is, at least tell Adel the good news," Sophia grumbled, her attention was on her screen but she was disappo
ADELINA'S POV Last night was still fresh in my head. I could not sleep because of the fear of being watched. Jacintha had been watching me all this time. Why was she so desperate that she rashly attacked me? Was she that desperate? Those were questions I didn't have answers for. A short breath left my lips, my hand reaching out to knock on the door. After knocking softly, I reached out for the door handle to push the door open. "Good Afternoon Mr Simons," I greeted as I stepped into the office. Mr Simons was at his desk, going through something on his laptop. He glanced at me as I entered. His expression was stoic. "How can I help you, Adelina?" He asked me, barely taking his attention from the screen. I adjusted the bag in my hand, then cleared my throat, feeling a bit nervous. "If you are uncomfortable, you can take a seat." He offered "Thank you, sir," I chimed, then took your seat opposite him. His eyes were still staring at me keenly. As if asking me what
ADELINA'S POV Mikhail unlocked the door and glanced at me, who stood rooted in place. His actions puzzled me making it hard to understand why he acts this way. "Your royal highness, Princess Abrielle, do you want me to get on a kneel before you come in, or should I call your friends that are having a fight because of you?" His sassy tone was annoying. I crossed my hands under my bosom with my brow arched at him. "Would you kneel for me if I asked you to?" I taunted him. It was a crazy question. He walked towards me in a few steps, and I subconsciously took a step back. He smirked. "Do you want me to kneel?" His voice had a teasing tone that made me excited yet scared at the same time. I knew he was joking but it was fun to play along. "Maybe, I would love to see a man like you on your knees." My voice drew. He chuckled, finding my words amusing. "You are truly cute, Mishka, but unfortunately, I don't kneel for anyone." He grabbed my chin forcing me to stare
ADELINA'S POV "What is wrong with you Adel?" I grumbled letting the cold water from the faucet pour over my hands. The tap kept on pouring. I replayed everything in my mind. The faint sense of jealousy, danger and excitement. What was that all about? I wondered. There was something about him, something pulling that made me scared. Something I was unable to resist. He always terrified me, he wasn't someone to be toyed with, yet I was daring enough to push him. Why did he separate us? No that wasn't it. The dance normally requires partners to swap and it was just a coincidence. That wasn't the problem. My hand clutched my chest feeling the turmoil in there. Was it fear or love? Love, the word left me stunned as I stared back at my reflection in the mirror in shock. Was I in love with him? I shook my head to shrug off my thoughts. It wasn't love, how can I get scared of someone I admired but the chills he sends through my spine also excited me. The sink faucet stoppe
MIKHAIL'S POV None of my warnings got through to her head. "Shit," I cussed, running my finger through my neatly combed hair. I knew Ophelia was going to be a challenge to handle because she thought she could challenge me because of the elders' backing. I didn't care what Ophelia did to Jessica, she would actually be doing me a favour but I couldn't believe I almost lost my shit. "What is wrong with me?" I muttered "Let's pretend like you don't know what the problem is. We can both play dumb." Dear goddess, why did she give me such an annoying wolf? I hissed, rubbing my nose. "You are more annoying Mikhail. Talking to you is vexing." The beast that shared the same mind with me and could read my thoughts sneered. "You bicker like a woman." I sneered at him. He hissed and then retreated. I wasn't expecting Adel to attend with Lawrence. My possessive side just didn't like the thought of my mate being close to another wolf I later joined
MIKHAIL'S POV The car ride to the hotel was quiet, I was in no mood to talk to Ophelia, although she had tried to strike up a conversation. "I think it will be best to get the injured warrior back to Lunaria but travelling in his condition will be hard." She kept on talking knowing I was listening. The warrior she was treating was the one injured during the failed assassination attempt. The rogues poisoned him with something that slowed down his healing. Werewolves and Lycans normally can heal on their own unless when poisoned. Ophelia was called to treat the warrior but even she was having an issue discerning the poison. Whatever poison they were using was dangerous. "I will think about it. " I answered as the car rolled onto the red carpet. It was time to put on a show. The elders have been a bit nosy recently in my private matters. Even if I had no plans yet of settling down now, I had to keep those men under control and the way to do so is to play to thei
