Myla

They left the warden's hut at first light.

The prisoners rode bound beneath guard, each tied to a separate spare horse. Dena carried the recovered documents inside her coat. Alec kept the brass courier token.

Seb rode on Myla's left.

Alec rode on her right.

The road south showed the damage of the pursuit. Hoofprints cut through the snow, and broken branches marked where Seb's riders had entered the timber.

A torn strip of Myla's declaration lay trapped beneath a stone.

She saw it.

She kept

AlecAlec woke before the room brightened.Myla lay between him and Seb, one hand curled against Alec’s chest. Seb’s arm remained around her waist, his bandaged forearm resting above Alec’s where they met across her.Neither of them had moved far during the night.Alec watched the slow rise of her ribs.He had counted her breaths at the warden’s hut. His body continued the task now, as if the danger might return if he stopped.Seb opened his eyes.“She warm?” he whispered.Alec touched the back of his fingers to her cheek. “Yes.”“Fever?”“No.”Myla’s eyes opened. She looked at Alec, then turned enough to find Seb.“You are both staring.”“You stopped moving,” Seb said.“I was asleep.”“We noticed.”Myla began to sit up.Both men moved at once.Seb supported her back while Alec steadied her injured shoulder. She paused halfway upright and looked down at their hands.“I can move by myself.”“Then move slowly,” Alec said. She sat with the blanket gathered around her. Her hair had dried

MylaThe door closed behind all three of them.Myla took two steps before her knees gave way.Seb caught her around the waist. Alec set the tea aside and reached them before she could touch the floor."I am fine," she said."You have used that word past the point of credibility," Alec replied.Seb kept his arm around her as they guided her towards the bed. "Sit before Elna comes upstairs and carries you there herself.""She could not carry me.""She would recruit help."Myla sat.The room was warm. Familiar. Safe. Her body understood the last fact before her mind did.The tension that had held her upright through the false summons, the ambush and the road home began to release. Her hands shook harder. Cold moved beneath her skin despite the fire burning near the wall.Alec crouched and removed one muddy boot.Seb took the other."You do not have to do that."Alec placed the boot beside the bed. "We know."Myla looked down before either man could see how much the answer affected her.T

"Barely."Alec glanced across Myla. "You said that yesterday.""It remains true."Seb leaned closer to Myla. "He wants us to stop talking.""I understood him.""I thought you might need an interpretation."Alec faced the road ahead. "I can still hear you.""That was not in doubt."The first Crimson River boundary post appeared between the

MylaThe strip of paper lay beside the brass token.Alec had taken it from his coat after Dena left to organise the first watch. Beyond the wall, one prisoner coughed and a guard told him to be quiet.Myla did not need to read the sentence.Sebastian of Crimson River holds no separate claim. She had written it in her own hand. Then she had torn it from the declaration and tied it to a branch so the two men sitting across from her could follow.Seb leaned against the table, his bandaged arm close to his side. Alec stood near the stove, giving her the distance he had finally learned to offer before she asked for it.“I wrote it,” Myla said.Seb looked at the strip. “I know.”“I believed it was the safest version.”“For whom?”The question was not sharp. That made it harder to answer.“For Crimson River. For Alec. For you.”Myla folded her hands on the table.“The Council recognises the marriage,” she said. “They understand contracts, succession and one Luna beside one Alpha. They do not

MylaThe old warden’s hut had one door, two narrow windows and a roof that complained under the weight of snow.Myla approved of it immediately.Dena checked the rear wall while Luis and the timber riders brought the prisoners into the attached tack room. The men were bound separately, one to an iron ring beside the feed bins, the other to the support post near the outer door. Two guards stayed with them. The remaining horses crowded beneath the lean-to, steaming in the cold.By the time the door shut behind them, dusk had flattened the road outside into grey and white. The hut was not home, but it could be defended, heated and reached again before morning if they needed to return to the ambush site. The bay mare lowered her head into the water Luis had carried from the pump.“Slowly,” Myla said.Luis glanced towards her. “I know.”“I was speaking to the horse.”“That makes more sense.”The mare drank. Myla ran one hand down her neck, felt the hard tremor beneath the skin and stayed u

AlecThe loose horse appeared first. It came down the Council road at an uneven trot, reins dragging, one stirrup striking its flank. Snow clung to its chest and darkened its shoulders with sweat.Alec raised one hand.Dena and the two riders behind him slowed without crowding the road. Then the man came out of the bend.He limped badly, one arm folded against his ribs, but he moved quickly when he saw the horse. He caught the trailing reins, hauled himself into the saddle and turned south.Towards them. The ambusher saw Alec’s group and pulled hard enough to bring the horse sideways.Alec did not reach for his knife.“Dena, right.”She moved before the man could choose the verge. The other two riders separated. One took the shallow ditch. The other held the road behind Alec. The ambusher tried to force the horse between them, but the animal had already been frightened once. It refused the narrow opening and reared. The man lost his seat.He struck the road on his injured side and sta
