"Same old same old," Damon Cortez thought as he ran his hands through his raven-colored hair, watching his friends greet the others returning for the school year.
At 19, Damon already felt the weight of the world on his shoulders. His Dad wasn't getting any younger. As Alpha to the strongest pack in America, it was expected that Damon would soon take over his father's duty, leaving his Mum, the current Luna, and his Dad free to enjoy their twilight years.
Watching his beta Knox and Gamma Judah performing their duties effortlessly, Damon found himself wishing that he could just run free for a while, enjoy life like his friends could before being weighed down with pack politics.
The only time his life was his own was in the dark hours, where he could throw caution to the wind and run wild, but even they were beginning to dwindle, his fiance Dalia insisting he spends most nights with her these days.
Damon felt trapped. Dalia wasn't his fated mate. The pack's council had chosen her to become the next Luna, her breeding lines were pure and of a high standard, and Dahlia was trained from an early age to be a good luna, but she was a vapid b*tch, and behaved like a mutt on heat whenever she was around him.
And although she was gorgeous, nothing about her excited him.
"Holy sh*t!"
Damon looked up at the sound of his friend's swearing and watched in admiration as a grunty red sports car roared past them, drifting into the school's car park. Damn, that car was sexy as hell and obviously had an experienced driver at the wheel. His heart started beating faster as he realized this must be the new human student he was supposed to show around, the vet's daughter Lisa Montgomery.
There weren't many human students at Moon Valley, high school. It lay in the heart of the pack's territory, and very few people moved into their town, usually preferring the bigger towns closer to Washington.
Occasionally though, they had a few humans applying for jobs, usually running from trouble, wanting to hide out in their community. They would move on after a few months, though.
The Montgomery family was different. The council had told him that David Montgomery was a well-respected veterinarian, with several successful practices across the States. Lacey Montgomery was a world-renowned artist and sculptor, big money and good people, apparently.
Their daughter Lisa was the sole reason for their move; her file explained that she was adopted from a baby, birth parents unknown, serious anger issues and problems with authority, but surprisingly a straight-A student and by all accounts according to her previous school records, she was a promising athlete and a talented singer.
Damon guessed that this was the reason that had swayed the council into allowing her application to be approved. This was her fifth school in a year.
When she hopped out of her car, though, Damon's world was turned upside down.
Legs that went on for days had been poured into a pair of low cut hipster jeans, a white top that was barely there, hung off tanned shoulders and clung to a voluptuous chest, leaving a toned midriff bare, and her bikers jacket gave Lisa an air of bad girl vibe, that was a total turn-on.
"F*ck me sideways!" Judah groaned, dropping down beside him, "That is a fine piece of ass right there..."
Before he knew what he was doing, Damon felt a growl ripped from his throat, and his hands were squeezing down on his best friend's windpipe, "MINE!" He bellowed in animalistic rage, his alpha blood on full display as his wolf Rage glared menacingly down at his Gamma.
"Woah, Woah, calm down, Damon!" Knox exclaimed, barging into Damon, who released Judah straight away; sometimes, being the next beta in training was a hazardous job, but this was the first time he had seen Damon lose control so quickly.
"MINE." Damon's wolf asserted again before slowly relinquishing control back to his human skin.
"Congratulations, Alpha," Judah grumbled, rubbing his neck, eyes to the ground, neck bared in submission to his friend, and Damon instantly felt guilty.
"Sorry, man, I don't really know what just happened...."
The scent of dragonfruit and honeysuckle had Damon lifting his nose, sniffing deeply at the intoxicating smell. As he looked to locate the cause of the addictive scent, his emerald green eyes met the glare of the woman who had unknowingly just rocked his world.
Lisa tapped her foot impatiently as the tall male looked at her, surrounded by his harem of gorgeous people, it was obvious that this guy was the school's prom king, hell everyone seemed to bow down to him, and that instantly got on her nerves. Unfortunately, his sheer mass was blocking the school entrance, and she was in no mood to be polite.
"Move your butt, Mr plastic fantastic, I have classes to find, and I hate being late."
A muffled laugh broke the dead silence, and she found the cause of said laughter with his hands clapped over his mouth, blue eyes dancing as he desperately fought the urge to give in and laugh at the expense of his friend.
Unfortunately, all it took was Lisa raising one perfectly plucked eyebrow for him to lose it completely.
"HAHAHA! SHE CALLED YOU PLASTIC FANTASTIC, DAMON, YOUR MATE...PLASTIC FANTASTIC!!!"
Mate, what!?!
"Listen here, Goofy, I am not mates with Mr. Plastic, hell I don't even know him, and while I'm flattered that my mere voice causes you to go into hysterics, I need to find my classes, so if you would just move your hero-worshipping harem along I would like to get inside, capisce?"
Finally, Damon recovered his voice, and the blatant disrespect this human showed his pack could not go unchallenged. The alpha in him wouldn't allow it.
"Excuse me, Miss high and mighty, a little respect would go a long way. Principal Turner asked us to wait outside, to show you around, not to open ourselves up to ridicule, get over yourself."
Granted, his voice wasn't quite as authoritative as it should be, but, hot damn, he was finding it hard to concentrate with her so near him.
Raunchy images of him pressing her naked body up against the wall, pinning her there while he tasted her essence bombarded his mind, and he felt his c*ck strain against his jeans at the thought of her legs wrapped around him as he ate her out...
Unfortunately, Lisa took his momentary lapse in concentration as a sign she could step past him. The moment she brushed against him, tingles exploded, and before Damon could register what had happened, a damp patch spread from his groin through his jeans, like a pubescent fourteen year old he had just cum in his pants!
Lisa slowly looked down, and it dawned on her that Damon had had an unfortunate accident.
She stood on tiptoe, close to his ear, noting that his skin was a bright shade of red, and he had started to sweat " Looks like you're a bit hot under the collar there cowboy, might wanna clean yourself up before class."
Biting her lip to cover her grin, Lisa walked past him and in through the doors, pausing to aim her parting shot.
"Oh, and don't worry about showing me around hot stuff, this ain't my first rodeo, and the school's a little on the small side, like a few other things I've come across lately..."
"It's okay, Rosie, you can come out now." Narelle Cortez looked at Lisa with narrowed eyes, daring her to say anything. Slowly, a timid grey wolf crept out of hiding, and the Alpha female kneeled so that she was eye level with her. "Come on, sweetheart, you can do it."Slowly her limbs started to phase back. It looked horribly painful, and both Knox and Lisa cringed with every snap. Finally, the transformation was complete, and a young woman lay curled at Narelle's feet. Knox looked at her for a moment in confusion, then he snapped his fingers in a typically male response, "From the packhouse, right? You're the house master's daughter!" Shyly the young woman raised her head, peering at Knox through sooty eyelashes, "Yes, Beta Knox, my name's Rosemarie." Narelle growled at Knox, her lip curled as she put her arm around Rosemarie's shoulder, "MINE." she asserted with a glare. "Okay then." Knox put his hands up in the air in surrender. Rosemarie gently touched Narelle's
It was two days before the luna spoke again. Knox loped alongside her, not forcing a conversation, just letting Lisa know he was there. Damon's words lay between them like a river of acid, the venom wreaking havoc on any new friendships, and Knox tried to figure a way past this. It took a few days for him to realize that Lisa thought she was helping by giving them all the facts about Judah; she hadn't meant to hurt anyone. Knox's own guilt caused him to run from the group, and that was something he would have to learn to live with. In the end, Damon had spared Judah's life, and Judah made a choice to carry on, lunging at the Alpha, which decided his fate. Finally, on the third day, Knox felt a pressure in his mind, and as he lowered the walls, Karistus's voice filtered through."Thank you." She said simply.Taking his life in his hands, he playfully nipped at her tail, baiting the Alpha wolf into playing a game of chase. Her eyes laughed at him, as they se
Long after the final member left the training ground, Damon and Knox sat beside Judah's body. He looked peaceful in death, but they didn't feel peace. Instead, the weight settled heavily on both shoulders now, instead of three- the way it used to be."I didn't have a choice," Knox kept muttering, staring at his hands in shock, and Damon didn't know how to make things right for him.The smell of rain was in the air, mixed with the scent of arterial blood, and Damon felt sick to his gut. How were they supposed to move forward from this?A shadow fell over the trio, and Narelle's voice was thick with tears as she took her place beside the other two. "Why did you do this, Judah? She asked, brokenly, " Why did you turn on your friends?"" I can answer that," Lisa replied as she entered from the blindside and sat beside Knox." In the time of the cleansing when Karistus is at her most brutal, the unworthy seek to form alliances in an attempt to ove
Things were playing out exactly as Dahlia had hoped. Judah was easily the strongest fighter in Moon Valley, and she'd seen him put Damon on his arse many times. It was sickening how quickly the pack bowed down to that piece of trash, and she vowed that the first act she would sanction as the new Luna would be exiling Lisa Montgomery and her human family. His warriors surrounded Judah as she approached him, sliding her arms around his waist, pressing her body against his back as she nibbled at his ear. Dahlia didn't care if the rest of the pack knew about their relationship anymore. Judah and his wolf were putty in her hands, and he was great in the sack, which was a bonus. When he won this challenge, Dahlia would rise to Luna, where she belonged, and Lisa would be left with a corpse to bury. Judah returned her affection, confident in his own abilities, and he shrugged off his t-shirt, preparing for battle.Damon entered the circle, closely followed by Knox, and the cro
Judah watched in stony silence as Damon and Knox discussed Karistus and what the cleansing would mean for their kind. Dahlia was right. Lisa had turned Damon into a weak excuse for an Alpha, being dragged around by his balls-and Knox seemed content to walk right alongside him."Why are we doing this exactly?" He asked a little forcefully, "If she is who you both think she is, then Karistus is the Alpha of all Alphas. Doesn't that give her control over things? Why do we have to get involved in a battle that has nothing to do with us?"Knox furrowed his brow and stared at Judah for a second, "Is everything alright?" He asked in concern, but Judah wasn't interested in playing nice anymore. He was sick of playing the third wheel while Alpha and Beta tiptoed around important issues."No, I'm fucking not alright!" He lashed out, and by the way, both sets of eyes changed color. It looked like he had pissed their wolves off. They were quick to remind him of his place.
The thing about power is that if you aren't careful, it tends to consume you, messing with your mind and turning you into something your friends no longer recognize. Karistus was running off of raw, ancient power direct from the Gods, and as she went from country to country recruiting her soldiers, it was beginning to take its toll.Looking in the mirror at the latest truck stop, Karistus' human skin felt confused. She recognized the face in the mirror as her own, but all the memories attached to her life were muted somehow, lost in the haziness of mag
