ELENA’S POV

“Hold on,” I called out, although I had no intention of stopping her. She didn’t hear me, though, as she stormed off with only one thing in sight.

Adrian.

I smirked as I followed her, knowing that the first step in my plan was well underway. Charlotte was raving, and she didn’t bother to hide it in front of her many distinguished guests. She approached the table where Damien and Adrian stood, discussing.

“You bastard!” she shrieked as she reached them, and the next thing we heard was a resounding slap. The crowd closer to the spectacle gasped, all turning to see what was going on.

Very good. Just the audience I needed.

The background music played on, but by this time, almost everybody’s attention were on the couple. Adrian reeled back with a look of shock on his face. Seeing the growing crowd feeding off of his embarrassment, he dropped his tone down a few octaves, clenching his jaw as he spoke.

“What the fuck was that for? How dare you slap me in front of all our guests?” he growled furiously, still keeping a smile on his face as if it would make the whole scene go away. He reached for her to bring her closer, but she flinched away.

“Don’t you dare touch me,” she spat, contempt filling her eyes. “You tried to kill me.”

“What?! What are you talking about?” Adrian asked, even more surprised than when she slapped him earlier.

“You mixed something in my drink. I saw the video. How could you?” she replied, crossing her arms in disbelief.

“What video? I didn’t try to kill you,” he said.

“Then explain this,” she shoved my phone into his face, the fake CCTV video playing. It was grainy and choppy, so it was hard to make out who it was that gave the stewardess the bottle of vodka, whispering into her ear. But it was edited to look exactly like Adrian’s silhouette, even showing a bit of the deep blue suit he had worn tonight. His eyes widened, yet still he looked confused as well.

I smiled inwardly as my way to where Damien stood, and we both watched the drama unfold. This was getting way interesting than I planned, now imagine when I get my revenge.

Damien reared closer to me, whispering to me. “I don’t know what you did, but I don’t mind. I don’t know how this is going to prove the murderers, though.”

I smirked. “I’ll prove it to you,” I said. “A contract is a contract.”

“Time is ticking, Elena,” he said, straightening to keep watching the fiasco.

My jaw ticked with anger, and a snarky comment rose to the tip of my tongue, but I swallowed it. Ever since I got out of jail, I’ve been constantly reminded of the stupid contract. I stealthily placed the tip of my heel on his shoe and pushed down. Hard. He groaned, and his eyes looked ready to kill me, shooting lasers at me. But he had to maintain composure, and that alone made me smile in satisfaction, taking my leg off his shoe. Annoying jerk.

Adrian and Charlotte, on the other hand, were still fighting. “Where did you get that?” Adrian questioned, raising his voice. The music stopped, and by now, everyone was full-on staring.

“Aunt___ I mean Celine showed me. I bet you want to take my company from me,” she spat with disdain.

Adrian stepped forward to her, like he was ready to smack her when Damien cleared his throat, breaking the little bubble they were both in. Adrian looked around, everyone was staring, and some people, even the paparazzi I had secretly let in, were capturing the moment.

I could see it, the tabloids and the blogs tomorrow, reading; Millionaire wife accused her husband of attempted murder. The thought of it gave me the thrills. Gosh, revenge feels sweet.

He cleared his throat, straightening himself and dusting some invisible lint from his suit. “You need to stop this right this instant. Everyone is watching,” he said to her in a low voice. But from the looks of it, she wasn’t ready to listen.

Frustrated, Adrian grabbed her hand and left the room, despite all her protests. As soon as they were no longer seen, the party resumed like nothing had happened at all. But I knew that everywhere will be full of the gossip that went down tonight, especially from those paparazzi I paid.

Sensing that Damien will come for me now that the earlier events had died down, I quickly slipped away in the direction my sister and Adrian had left to. Unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough to know where they went.

I guess I’ll have to start looking then.

Thankfully, I didn’t have to search for long. I heard their voices first before I found them in an empty room, unknown to them that the door was left slightly ajar. From the opening, I could see that they were in a heated argument, continuing what they couldn’t finish in the hall earlier.

“How dare you embarrass me in front of all the guests? Are you out of your mind?” Adrian bellowed in rage.

“I am crazy,” she yelled back, matching his energy. “Yes, since you decided to kill me so you can take over my company. Tell me, can you go any lower, you thieving fucker!”

She suddenly yelped, falling to the ground as he had slapped her. I struggled to swallow a gasp from escaping, not believing my eyes. The look she gave him when she looked up was enough to freeze hell over twice. But he didn’t seem fazed at all.

“Get this to your thick, dumb dead,” he spat. “I didn’t try to poison you, or whatever delusion you have in your head. The video you saw isn’t me. You’re even so dumb not to know that things can be easily fabricated. The next time you try to act cute with me, I won’t be so nice in front of anybody.”

  • WOUNDS OF DECEIT   ACTIVE SLEEPWALKER

ELENA'S POVI looked at the time as I woke up, groggy. It was 5:30 am. Still early, but then I remembered my plan as I tried to get up. Suddenly, I heard the thumping of shoes on the hardwood floor of the staircase. It was Damien getting down to his indoor gym. I quickly hid well on the couch, careful not to get caught. He didn't seem to notice, and soon the door to the gym door closed behind him.Sure that he was inside and wasn't coming out any time soon, I quietly tiptoed to the kitchen, opening the fridge and getting out the frozen spice jars. I returned them to the drawers from which I got them. For extra effects, I turned on the sink tap, knowing by morning the whole kitchen would be flooded, and stealthily returned back to the couch. Lying back down, no sooner had I placed my head on the headrest than I dozed off.Waking up again, to the bright rays coming into the living room. It was almost 8 am and I yawned, getting up to stretch when I spotted Damien head towards the kitchen

  • WOUNDS OF DECEIT   EIGHT MONTHS AGO

DAMIEN’S POV When she was out of sight, I dazedly made my way to the door and closed it. Resting against the shut door, I placed my palms on my chest, trying to calm it down. Please be still, heart. Please be still. I shouldn’t feel this way. She was rash and wild and talked too much. Any other person who yapped half as much as she did would piss the hell out of me. So why the hell is my heart beating so fast when I’m near her? I can’t even reach a fifth of her outer radius and it was skipping many beats. The look in her eyes when she looked at me. Or as I felt her burn furious holes through the back of my head. God damn. I undressed and got under the shower, letting the cold water wash all the many ways I was thinking of Elena out of my system. Stop getting over your head, Damien. She’s your brother’s murderer. But she really wasn’t, I realized. That was why I looked for her and put her in a protection cell for months now. That was why I was on this revenge path with her, even

  • WOUNDS OF DECEIT   STOP IGNORING ME!

ELENA’S POV We soon reached his mansion and, without another word, Damien got out of the car, heading for the door. I rushed after him fuming, he couldn’t just walk out so calmly and collected after throwing a fast one on me like that. “What the hell did you just say to me?” I shot after him. But he ignored me, getting off his coat jacket and his suit and carefully and neatly hanging them on the coat rack. I swore under my breath, he was really acting like I don’t exist. “Hey, dickhead,” I spat, but he kept on ignoring me, pretending like I was invisible. He made his way straight to his bedroom and without thinking, I followed him, still ranting and fuming. I hated that he made me feel small. Urrggh, and he just had to have the last say. “Stop fucking ignoring me,” I shrieked. He stopped this time, turning to me and boil, did he look pissed. I gulped visibly on seeing the hard expression on his face, his lips drawn into a thin line. It was surprisingly hot to look at. He began

  • WOUNDS OF DECEIT   FAILED PARTNERSHIP

DAMIEN’S POV I cut him off, pulling out a video. “I’ve been informed of some activities of yours, as I was considering going into partnership with you. It appears that you’ve been having an affair.” His face blanched, fear in his eyes as I played the video. The video showed him in a hotel room with another woman and they were having sex. From the foreplay to the BDSM shit he was doing to her. In the middle of the video, the woman left and soon another woman walked into the room. Adrian looked at the video in shock. “How did you get this?” He choked out. I ignored him, laughing. “This is really funny,” I let out. “Who knew that Adrian Steele was into this type this?” “I said how you got this video?” he ground out. “I’m sure your wife does not know about this,” I snapped, saying darkly. “Or maybe she does and she’s also doing the same thing to you. Really, I can’t imagine otherwise. I should leak this video to the press.” He looked flustered and began stammering. “P-p-p-p-please

  • WOUNDS OF DECEIT   NOT LOOKING GOOD TOGETHER

DAMIEN’S POV I spotted Adrian as he returned to the party, but he was alone. The fiasco that had gone down earlier seemed forgotten, but I knew that the issues was far from over because almost every news and gossip outlet would be abuzz with it by tomorrow. I had to do what I came here for. Elena and I had planned to pit the couple against each other and divide them slowly. The thought of Elena suddenly left a bad aftertaste in my mouth. Everything about her screamed impulsive, rash, sizzling hot, and dangerous, even, telling me to run in the opposite direction. She was an embodiment of the opposite of everything I was. Too wrong for me. Yet strangely, I couldn’t bring myself to run away. I had to keep consoling myself with the fact that our contract would end the moment she proved who the killers were. Till then, I’d have to keep her close, make sure she wasn’t deceiving me just to get out of prison. The applause from the crowd brought me back to reality. Adrian and Charlotte we

  • WOUNDS OF DECEIT   DODGE A BULLET

ELENA’S POV “Try and soil my reputation in public one more time,” he continued, looking at her with disgust gracing his features. “I’d forget that we’re in public and put you in your place.” “I hate you,” she shot at him, as he made to walk away. “I loathe the day I ever fell in love with you. You were nothing. Without us, you were nothing. Just an average loser, and now, you’re becoming too greedy.” He didn’t bother denying it or saying anything for that matter. He turned from her and made his way to the door. I inhaled sharply, making a quick escape so I won’t get caught. He slammed the door as he left and I waited for a while, till I was sure he had left and he wasn’t coming back. I slipped out of my hiding spot, heading for the door where Charlotte was, but I almost bumped into her as she was coming out of the room. Her eyes were slightly bloodshot, and my eyes widened, although it was all fake and pretenses. “Oh my God, I was just looking for you. I was worried about the wa
