Chapter 2

مؤلف: Shirley
Dusk was falling when I awoke in agony.

The petrification from the Blood Blight felt like a million ants gnawing at my bones.

I had to swallow the last three high-concentration doses of poison, the only thing masking the fact that I was a dead woman walking.

I forced myself out of bed. There was a grand performance to put on tonight.

Lily's bright laughter echoed from the living room. I pushed myself to descend the spiral staircase and saw her nestled in Vivienne's arms, chattering away.

"Aunt Vivienne, this curse is so cool! I want to learn it!" Lily pointed excitedly at a page in the book, which illustrated a ritual for making a living person bleed in agony.

"Of course, my clever little Lily," Vivienne said, gently stroking her eternally youthful golden curls. Her eyes, however, held a trace of disgust for the "monster child," a look Lily was oblivious to.

The moment Lily saw me, the smile vanished from her face. She deliberately shrank deeper into Vivienne's embrace.

I tried to approach, wanting to see what she was reading.

"You smell... off," Lily wrinkled her small nose, pressing herself tighter against Vivienne. "Don't come any closer."

It was the stench of death. My body was decaying, but they thought it was just a side effect of medication.

"One moment, darling," Vivienne said, feigning concern as she looked at me. "Isolde probably has important matters to discuss."

"I don't want to hear it," Lily made a face at me. "You're boring."

I faltered.

To protect her, I had to constantly force her to control her bloodlust.

Vivienne, on the other hand, only encouraged her indulgence, teaching her cruel ways to amuse herself.

A child can't distinguish between indulgence and genuine affection; she only sees it as "love."

"It's all right. You two carry on," I managed a smile.

In the dining room, Miles was enjoying a glass of warm stag's blood, holding a holographic map of the clan's territories.

He barely glanced up as I entered.

"You look dreadful," he frowned, his tone holding no concern, only distaste. "Don't forget the Elder Council meets tonight."

"I need to talk to you." I sat down across from him.

"What is it now? More of your family rules?" He finally looked up, his impatience clear.

"It's about the Blood Covenant," I said, producing a parchment scroll. "I want to amend our prenuptial agreement."

Miles took the scroll, his red eyes widening. "Isolde, you're relinquishing control of all your territories?"

"Including the Progenitor's Ring." I removed the ancient, power-infused ring from my finger and placed it gently on the table.

"What?" He shot to his feet.

I watched him calmly. "I'm also transferring my entire art collection to Vivienne. Even the classical oil paintings passed down through the family."

"Even the fourteenth-century manuscript of The Kindred Origins?" Miles's voice trembled. "It's priceless!"

"She has a better appreciation for art than I do," I answered coolly. "Think of it as my early wedding gift to her."

The air went still, the only sound the crackling of the fire in the hearth.

Miles slowly sank back into his chair, his eyes a storm of conflicting emotions. "Isolde, what the hell are you playing at?"

"I'm not playing at anything," I said calmly. "I'm just ready to let go."

"You know, don't you?" He fell silent for a long moment, his expression turning wary.

"Miles, a vampire's sense of smell is very keen."

I pointed to his collar. "Your shirt smells of Midnight Orchid. The perfume I custom-blended for Vivienne two hundred years ago. It's one of a kind."

He was silent, a flash of embarrassment crossing his face at being caught.

"I don't blame you," I continued. "I've lived for hundreds of years. I'm too old-fashioned, I don't know how to enjoy the pleasures of modern life. Vivienne is passionate and uninhibited. She can give you a fire I can't."

"Isolde!" He slammed his hand on the table, cutting me off. "Stop talking like you're… done. Like you're leaving."

"I'm calling a clan meeting tomorrow," I said, rising to my feet. "I will officially transfer my shares in the tech empire to Vivienne. She will become the new chairwoman of the board."

"Tell Vivienne to prepare herself. Even as a newly turned fledgling, after tonight, she will be an incredibly wealthy woman."

"You're insane!" Miles leaped up, an inexplicable panic rising in his voice as he yelled, "You are Isolde Vance! You don't just hand over your empire! Fight me, dammit! Scream at me!"

"I'm not insane." I looked out the window. In the garden, Vivienne was doing donuts in the limited-edition sports car Miles had given her, with Lily shrieking in delight.

"I just want all of you to be happy."

On the night she returned from the cemetery, Lily sat in her studio, staring at the moon. She had just spoken to her mother's grave—about how she would remember the sins of them all.But fate, it seemed, would not allow her to remain a mere observer."Don't kill me! Please!"The cry of a small child cut through the estate's nightly silence.Lily put down her brush and looked from her studio window down into the courtyard. Two black-robed elders were dragging a little girl, who looked no older than six, toward the execution block. The child's clothes were torn and she was covered in blood, clearly having just escaped from hunters."Another product of an illegal turning," one of the elders sneered, raising a silver dagger. "By clan law, the sentence is immediate execution."In an instant, Lily was rushing down the stairs. The little girl was cowering in a corner, her eyes filled with despair and terror.Just like her, all those years ago."Stop."Lily's voice, though still that of a chil

Fifty years later.Lily still had the face of an eight-year-old, but her eyes held the weariness of a century."A new piece by 'L' just sold for a fortune," the gallery manager reported excitedly over the phone. "The buyer would still like to meet you in person.""No," Lily refused in her childish voice. "Tell them the artist is very old and doesn't see guests."No one would have guessed that the "Ghost Painter L," who had taken the art world by storm, was actually a monster trapped in the body of a child. For fifty years, she had lived under a dozen false identities, each painting a scream into the endless night.Silas approached. "Miss Lily, the car is ready.""Let's go." Lily hopped off the chair, not sparing a glance for the priceless painting. "Today is the anniversary of Mother's death."The headstone was already covered in flowers. They were all from her, placed over the years. There were no others. She expertly cleaned the dust from the headstone, her movements as steady as an

"Kill me... Miles, I'm begging you, give me a knife..."At the top of the clock tower, the midday screams were more punctual than the church bells.Vivienne was curled in a corner of the "Sun Cage." The specially enchanted glass filtered out the sun's lethal ultraviolet rays, leaving only a searing heat that felt like a branding iron. Her skin ulcerated and healed, over and over again.Miles stood in the shadows below the tower, clutching a withered lily. He listened to her wails from above, his face a mask of stone."My Lord, are you not going to see her?" Silas asked coldly from behind him. "Today marks one month of her punishment.""No." Miles turned and walked toward the edge of the muddy cemetery he had defiled. "Death would be too easy for her. Her hell is living."He walked to the edge of the cemetery and stopped abruptly. The invisible barrier was still there. If he took one more step, the blood curse Isolde had left behind would scorch his soul. For an entire month, he had be

"Miles! Are you insane? I am the mistress of this house! I am the sole heir to the Vance clan!"Vivienne clutched her throat and scrambled toward the door, her voice hoarse but still dripping with disgusting arrogance. "You dare to harm me? When the lawyers get here, I'll have you thrown out of this estate! I'll make you wander the streets like a dog!""No need to wait, Miss Vivienne. I've been here for the past hour."Sterling, the Vance clan's chief counsel, pushed open the door, a black briefcase in his hand.He stepped over the splintered wood, bowing slightly to Marcus before turning to the others."Silas, secure the video evidence from just now." Sterling adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. "Based on that recording, Miss Vivienne's actions constitute not 'good-faith inheritance,' but 'murder with malicious intent.'"Vivienne's face went white, and she shrieked, "So what? Isolde signed the papers! She signed them herself! All the assets are mine!""Indeed, she signed. But you clear

The holographic projection didn't stop for Miles's stunned silence. The image changed, displaying a private family physician's diagnostic log, with dates spanning the last three months. The report clearly stated: Subject: Vivienne Thorne. Transformation Status: Complete. Rejection Symptoms: None. Physical Condition: Healthy.Every line was another hammer blow to Miles's face."That's impossible..." The world was spinning around Miles. "She was in pain every day. I saw it with my own eyes..."The screen switched to another file, a recorded phone call. The timestamp was from a week ago.Vivienne's voice filled the room, light and cheerful, completely lacking her usual feigned weakness."Your Majesty, Wolf King, the plan is proceeding smoothly.""How are things on Isolde's end?" a gruff male voice asked."She's dying," Vivienne laughed, her tone demonic. "The Blood Blight, with no cure. She won't last more than a few days. I have Miles completely wrapped around my finger. He'll do anythi

Miles felt a hollow terror expand in his chest, a sensation he hadn't felt in centuries. Miles followed his finger. He saw the pile of silver-gray dust shimmering in the sunlight. He collapsed heavily to the ground, his legs giving out beneath him. The Duke of the Vampire World crawled across the floor toward the pile of ash, dragging his expensive coat through the dirt.He made guttural, choking sounds, "No, no, no..." He shook his head violently, tears of blood streaming down his face, mixing with the dust on the floor. He tried to scoop the ash up, but his hands shook so uncontrollably that he couldn't hold it. "Put her back together, Silas! Fix her! Use magic! I'll give you anything! Just put her back!""You have desecrated her, My Lord."Miles didn't hear him. He curled around the pile of ash, shielding it with his body, rocking back and forth. "It's cold. She's cold. Isolde hates the cold. Why didn't you turn on the heater?!" He screamed at the empty room, his sanity fractur
