Chapter 1

Prologue

The Sound of Waiting

The first thing Elena noticed about silence was that it had weight.

It sat beside her at dinner tables, slept beside her in expensive beds, followed her through hallways larger than most people's apartments. Over the years it had become so familiar that sometimes she wondered if it belonged to the marriage more than either of them did.

Tonight, it sat across from her again.

The dining table stretched beneath the chandelier, polished black marble reflecting two untouched plates. The chef had prepared Adrian's favorite meal after Elena reminded the staff three separate times that morning—not because she expected gratitude, but because loving him had long ago become instinct.

Across from her, Adrian Laurent scrolled through his phone with the detached focus of a man who never truly came home. His dark suit remained immaculate despite the late hour, silver cufflinks catching the light whenever his thumb moved across the screen. Twenty-three minutes had passed since he walked through the front door.

He still hadn't looked at her.

"Elena."

His voice finally broke the silence, calm and even.

Something inside her still answered it before she could stop herself.

"Yes?"

"Tomorrow night. There's a charity banquet."

His eyes never left the phone.

"I'll need you there."

Not Would you like to come?

Not Are you free?

Just certainty.

"Of course."

She lowered her fork. For a foolish moment she'd hoped tonight's dinner might become more than another meal shared with his absence. Tomorrow was their wedding anniversary.

He hadn't mentioned it once.

Adrian gave a brief nod.

Nothing more.

Beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, rain drifted across the skyline, blurring towers into streaks of silver and gold. She used to love rainy nights.

Before she married Adrian.

Now they only reminded her how beautiful lonely things could be.

"You've barely touched your food," she said.

"I ate earlier."

His answer came without hesitation.

She looked at the dishes she'd spent the afternoon planning.

Another dinner she had prepared for someone who had never intended to share it.

Heartbreak, she had learned, rarely arrived all at once.

It accumulated quietly.

It was remembering someone's favorite meal while they forgot you were waiting.

Adrian finally set his phone on the table.

Hope rose before she could stop it.

Then he spoke.

"Claire will be at tomorrow's event."

Claire Holloway.

Beautiful. Brilliant. Untouchable.

The woman the city had once expected Adrian Laurent to marry.

The woman he had almost chosen.

Elena's fingers tightened beneath the tablecloth, though her smile never wavered.

"I heard she was back."

"She returned from London last week." Adrian reached for his wine. "Her company is discussing a partnership with ours."

Business.

Everything with Adrian eventually became business.

Yet she caught the almost invisible pause before he spoke Claire's name.

Most people would never have noticed it.

She did.

Seven years had taught her the language of his silences.

"You don't have to worry," he said, lifting the glass to his lips.

"I'm not."

He studied her for the first time that evening.

"You've been overthinking lately."

The words weren't meant to wound.

That was what made them hurt.

Cruelty would have been easier to understand.

Instead, Adrian had mastered something quieter—making her feelings seem so small they hardly deserved a place in the conversation.

"I understand."

She smiled because she always did.

Understanding had become another habit.

Outside, the rain grew heavier, tapping softly against the glass.

The grandfather clock in the foyer chimed eleven.

Adrian glanced at his watch and rose from the table.

"I have an early meeting."

Her heart tightened despite herself.

"Will you be home before the banquet?"

"I'm not sure."

She lowered her eyes.

Of course he wasn't.

He adjusted the cuff of his sleeve before finally looking at her.

It lasted only a second.

One brief glance.

Ridiculously, it was enough to make her heart remember why she had fallen in love with him.

"You should sleep earlier," he said. "You've looked tired lately."

Concern.

Or something that almost sounded like it.

Before she could decide which, he turned and walked toward the staircase.

The conversation ended the same way it always did.

With Adrian leaving first.

Elena remained at the table long after his footsteps disappeared upstairs.

The candles burned lower between two untouched plates while rain whispered against the windows.

She couldn't remember the last time Adrian had stayed because he wanted to.

Or the last time she had stopped waiting for him to.

Seven years had quietly reshaped her.

She had learned to lower her voice because he disliked noise after work.

She knew which tie he reached for before important meetings, how he took his coffee, the exact expression that meant he didn't want to be disturbed.

She had learned him so completely that, somewhere along the way, she had stopped learning herself.

Her phone vibrated against the table.

Maya. Her younger sister.

"Are you still awake?"

Elena smiled faintly.

"Yes."

The reply came almost immediately.

"Did he forget again?"

Her eyes drifted to Adrian's untouched dinner.

She typed slowly.

"He's busy."

Three dots appeared.

"You always say that."

Elena stared at the screen for a long moment before locking it without replying.

How could she explain something she barely understood herself?

Love had a strange way of defending the people who hurt it.

Especially when it had spent years believing patience would eventually become enough.

From somewhere down the hall came the quiet rhythm of computer keys.

Adrian had already disappeared into his study.

She switched off the candles and climbed the staircase.

A thin line of light stretched beneath the study door.

She slowed without meaning to.

The steady tapping of keys continued on the other side.

She almost knocked.

Almost reminded him what tomorrow was.

Instead, she kept walking.

Inside their bedroom, she changed into her silk nightdress and sat quietly at the edge of the bed.

The rain continued whispering against the windows while the city shimmered beyond the glass.

Nearly twenty minutes passed.

Only then did the bedroom door open.

Adrian entered carrying his laptop.

Without a word, he crossed to the window and settled into the chair beside it.

"You're still awake," she said quietly.

"Hm."

"I thought you'd be in the study longer."

"I finished what couldn't wait."

He opened the laptop again.

Elena slipped beneath the covers.

The bed still felt too large.

For several minutes, only the sound of rain and the quiet tapping of keys filled the room.

Then, before courage abandoned her—

"Adrian?"

His hands stopped.

"What is it?"

Tomorrow.

Seven years.

Their wedding anniversary.

She searched his face for even the smallest sign that he remembered.

Nothing.

Her thoughts drifted instead to the envelope tucked inside the bottom drawer of his study desk.

The one with the law firm's return address.

The one she had noticed three days ago by accident.

She still hadn't asked about it.

Part of her was afraid she already knew the answer.

"Nothing," she whispered.

He watched her for a second before returning to his work.

The quiet tapping began again.

Elena turned toward the darkness, closed her eyes, and tried not to picture the unopened envelope waiting in the drawer downstairs.
