Chapter 29: The Viper Syndicate's Mistake

The grease-stained tavern at Outpost 79 smelled like cheap synthetic whiskey, burnt cordite, and terrible life choices.

Valerie slammed four heavy glass mugs of amber liquid onto the scarred wooden table, sending a splash over Toby’s hastily rigged portable radar unit.

"To surviving another day in this colossal shithole," Valerie cheered, raising her glass. "And to whatever black-market illegal roids you bastards are taking, because no way in hell is an F-rank Guide tearing off a Tier-4 Void Stalker’s jaw with her bare hands."

"Hey! It's pure genetic perfection and zero sleep, thank you very much," Phoenix cackled, kicking her boots up onto an empty chair and taking a massive gulp. She winced as the liquid burned its way down her throat. "Jesus Christ, Valerie. Is this fuel or whiskey? It tastes like a battery leaked into a gutter."

"It's seventy percent grain alcohol and thirty percent jet engine solvent," Valerie smirked, taking a long swig without flinching. "Keeps the Abyssal parasites from breeding in your liver. Plus, it’s the only thing that makes listening to the Board's radio updates tolerable."

Across the table, Killian sat stiffly, his massive shoulders almost touching Phoenix’s arm. He was sipping his alcohol with absolute, stoic military discipline, though his eyes never left Phoenix for more than two seconds.

Valerie leaned back, resting her chin in her palm as her sharp emerald eyes darted between Phoenix and Killian. A wicked, wolfish grin spread across her face.

"So, Grand Commander," Valerie drawled, raising an eyebrow at Killian. "I see you brought your own personal mountain along. Does the giant tank come with the job, or do you two spend all your off-duty hours doing... extra-curricular conditioning?"

Pfft!

Toby instantly sprayed a mouthful of whiskey all over his radar screen, coughing violently. "Oh god, don't ask her that!"

Killian froze mid-sip, his cheeks instantly flushing a deep, radiant crimson that burned all the way to his collar. He nearly crushed the glass mug in his grip. "I am her loyal vanguard! We are completely professional!"

"Right, professional," Valerie snickered, winking at Phoenix. "Honest to god, sweetie, if I had an SS-rank brick house staring at me like I was the last steak on earth, I wouldn't be doing much talking."

"Don't tease the silver boy, Valerie," Phoenix smirked, reaching over to pat Killian's burning cheek, causing the giant man to choke on his own air. "He gets flustered if you talk about anything below the belt. Besides, we've got bigger fish to fry."

Phoenix leaned forward, her dark eyes instantly sharpening into lethal focus as the room's atmosphere shifted from tavern banter to tactical execution.

"Toby, report."

Toby wiped his radar screen with his sleeve, tapping a glowing holographic display into life on the sticky table. "While you guys were drinking battery acid, I hacked into the outpost's sub-space sensors. Sterling didn't just send us here hoping beasts would eat us. He hired the Viper Syndicate—a rogue mercenary group operating out of the abandoned iron mines three miles north."

"Viper Syndicate?" Valerie scoffed, her eyes darkening. "Those scumbags have been ambushing our supply lines for months. The leader is an S-rank Executioner named Malakor."

"Well, Malakor just received a five-million-credit transfer from an encrypted Academy account," Toby grinned, adjusting his goggles. "And his heavy artillery is currently tracking right toward our perimeter."

BOOM!

The entire tavern violently lurched as an artillery shell hit the outer compound wall, shattering every glass bottle behind the bar and rattling the floorboards. Alarms wailed outside as panicked screaming erupted in the streets.

"Speak of the devil," Phoenix laughed, finishing her whiskey in one shot and slamming the mug down so hard it cracked the wood. "Malakor's knocking!"

Valerie snatched her sniper rifle off the wall, racking a high-explosive round into the chamber with a lethal click. "That prick just ruined my favorite drinking hour."

"Killian! Toby! Valerie!" Phoenix barked, her crimson dragon energy surging to life around her like a halo of blood. "Let's go show the Viper Syndicate what happens when you interrupt a lady's night out!"

They burst out of the tavern doors into a warzone.

Three armored siege vehicles belonging to the Viper Syndicate were parked on the ridge above the crater, firing high-yield plasma mortar shells directly into the base. Dozens of heavily armed mercenaries were scaling the breached perimeter fences, shooting anything that moved.

At the center of the ridge stood Malakor—a hulking, cyborg S-rank mercenary wielding twin plasma chainsaws, laughing hysterically into the smoke. "Bring out the F-rank bitch! Sterling wants her head on a spike!"

"You want my head, chrome-dome?!" Phoenix’s voice roared through the explosion smoke.

She didn't run. She didn't cover.

Phoenix detonated off the ground with an SSS-rank shockwave, leaving a crater in the street as she shot straight into the sky like a crimson missile, rocketing directly toward Malakor’s ridge.

Malakor’s jaw dropped as he looked up. "What the fucking hell is that—"

Phoenix landed on his heavy siege vehicle like a falling meteor, the crushing kinetic force instantly flattening the ten-ton tank into a pancake of twisted metal.

She stood in the blazing fire, her dark eyes burning with pure, unbridled dragon rage, her spear humming with absolute destruction.

"Squad Outcast!" Phoenix screamed over the roar of the flames, a predatory grin splitting her face. "Leave none of these bastards alive!"

The door to Phoenix’s private quarters hissed shut, the heavy pneumatic seals locking with a deep, echoing thud that cut off the ambient hum of Outpost 79’s main garage. Inside, the room was dimly lit by the low amber glow of the terminal monitors and the faint crimson ambient light wafting off Phoenix’s skin.Phoenix tossed her combat vest onto the steel desk, the leather hitting the surface with a heavy thud. Before she could turn around, Killian closed the distance, his massive frame blocking out the room's single overhead lamp. His breath hitched as he stared down at her, his stormy blue eyes burning with raw, unadulterated need."You like pushing me to the absolute edge, don't you, Boss?" Killian growled, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that vibrated straight through her chest."I like seeing how much weight you can carry, big boy," Phoenix purred, stepping into his space until her chest pressed against his bare sternum. "And so far, you haven't dropped the load once."Killian did

The command elevator surged upward with a metallic screech, the floor plates vibrating beneath their boots. Phoenix leaned back against the steel wall, catching her breath as the crimson light in her eyes settled into a steady, predatory gleam. Killian stood at her left, his massive frame still radiating heat, his knuckles white around the grip of his star-iron greatsword. On her right, Valerie casually leaned against the railing, twirling a high-caliber round between her gloved fingers with lazy precision."Try not to shoot the holoscreen this time, Val," Phoenix drawled, throwing her a wicked glance. "We need to actually hear their offer before we reject it.""No promises, Boss," Valerie smirked, sliding the round back into her tactical belt. "Depends on how annoying their voices are."The elevator doors hissed open, revealing Outpost 79’s main war room. Soren and Toby were huddled over the central holotable, frantic fingers flying across flickering holographic keyboards. In the cor

The high-pressure hydraulic lifts of Outpost 79 groaned like dying beasts under the sixty-ton weight of Sterling’s Nightmare. The suffocating stench of scorched star-iron, cooked plasma, and burnt-the-fuck-out wire insulation billowed through the subterranean staging bay in thick, acrid clouds. Sparks showered onto the grease-stained concrete as the rig’s cooling vents hissed, dumping clouds of scalding white steam into the freezing garage air. Before the main drive assembly had even spun down, Jax kicked the rear hatch open with a deafening BANG. He dragged three crates of stolen dark-matter ammo across the corrugated deck, metal screaming against metal. "Toby! Soren! Get your useless asses down here with the cranes! We’ve got enough Class-A battery cores to power a small fucking moon or blow this entire sector straight to hell!"Valerie dropped off the rig's roof rack like a shadow. Her combat boots hit the concrete with a heavy thud as she set her anti-materiel sniper rifle onto an

The heavy iron doors of Sterling’s Nightmare slammed shut, sealing off the roaring engine rumble of Outpost 79 into a low, vibrating thrum. The sixty-ton war rig devoured the desolate highway at breakneck speed, tearing straight toward Sector Seven. In the rear command bay, surrounded by crate stacks of SSS-rank munitions, Valerie sat on a tool chest, her long legs stretched out as she wiped down her sniper rifle's high-tech optics. Phoenix leaned against the opposite workbench, tossing an unactivated plasma grenade in the air and catching it casually. She looked Valerie up and down, a mischievous smirk pulling at her lips. "You know, Val," Phoenix drawled, "for someone who spends all day looking through a long glass, you sure miss a lot of close-up action." Valerie didn't even look up from her lens, though her lips twitched. "I don't miss anything, Boss. I just prefer my targets at five hundred yards where they can't make a mess on my boots." "Is that right?" Phoenix stepped ove

By dawn, Outpost 79’s underground garage looked like an illegal military arms fair on steroids. Toby and Soren were high on energy drinks, cackling like mad scientists while welding experimental plasma cannons directly onto the assault transport. Jax was lounging on an anti-matter missile crate, casually eating cold noodles with a bayonet, while Valerie fine-tuned her sniper scope to punch through heavy mech armor. At the center of it all stood Phoenix, admiring their shiny new toy: a heavily reinforced, star-iron-plated war rig complete with dual rocket pods and a high-frequency battering ram. "She's gorgeous," Phoenix sighed, wiping a spot of engine grease off her cheek. "I’m naming her Sterling’s Nightmare." "I still think we should have mounted the extra flamethrower on the bumper," Jax called out, chewing loudly. "Nothing says 'good morning' like third-degree burns." "We need the bumper clear for ramming, Jax," Valerie countered, taking a swig of cold coffee. "And speak

The second Phoenix’s palm slammed onto the SSS-rank Dragon Sovereign Core, the ancient vault didn't just heat up—it exploded like a dirty bomb filled with red lighting and pure, unadulterated violence. BOOM! The shockwave blew weapon rack doors off their hinges and sent half-ton crates flying like styrofoam. Killian was moving before the blast even hit. He threw his massive frame in front of Valerie and Toby, slamming his broadshield into the obsidian floor with an SS-rank roar. "BRACE!" "Jesus fucking Christ!" Jax screamed, ducking behind a pillar as her buzz-cut hair blew straight back in the superheated gale. "Is she absorbing a core or nuking the continent?!" At the epicenter, Phoenix floated three feet off the ground, her dark eyes lit up with liquid crimson fire. The red jewel in her grip liquefied, pouring straight into her pores, coiling around her ribs, and burning through her tactical vest like a brand. Ancient, glowing draconic runes flared down her throat and across
