Chapter ten: Let's be friends.
Omotayo "Why the urgent meeting Tunji? I'm not exactly less busy, you know," I nagged as soon as I walked into my cousin's office. "Good afternoon to you too, cousin," he replied sarcastically and I rolled my eyes. "Let's drop the courtesy and get to the point, I don't have all day," I demanded hastily. "You're an awfully rude young lady but since it's a permanent trait, I'll ignore it," he said and I frowned but decided against firing back. "I called you here because I have both good and bad news for you. Earlier today, I got a call from Mr Johnson's assistant and he informed me that Mr Johnson requested an attorney change and he wants you to take over the case," he told me, expecting a quick reaction but instead I urged him to go on. "So what's the good news?" I asked when he wouldn't continue. "Are you serious Tayo? Was what I just told you not good news? Imagine you win this case and actually get Chief Onuh out of their way, do you know how popular you're going to

Chapter eleven: They're in it together.
Omotayo   As I expected, dealing with chief Onuh was going to be very far from easy. He easily had the best lawyers in the country at his disposal and till date he has never lost a case put against him. Going through his criminal records had been an eye opener for me; the man has a spotless record and yet he is popular for his notorious activities. He has been arrested twice but according to word on the street, the same judge always seems to be in charge of his case and it's rumored the judge was on his payroll. If any of these rumors are true, then definitely, I already lost the case even before I started. I stayed up all night reading through his files continuously, hoping I would find one flaw in his supposed clean slate but they was none, at least, none that was obvious but after years of working and watching my dad work, I've learnt that there's no perfect crime and behind that clean slate, there's a weakness and I'm

Chapter twelve: I trust you.
Adebayo   "Bayo, why haven't you called Tayo to confirm what you heard? If she betrayed us we need to act fast and cancel our contract with that firm." Bunmi says impatiently."Bunmi, you're wasting your time talking to this one." Arin says, chiming in. "That lawyer lady already has his number and nothing you say or do will bring him back to his right senses. The best we can do for him now is look for a good cleric to help me snap out of whatever trap she has set for him, if not, he will transfer the entire company to her by tomorrow morning, if care is not taken sef, he'll sell us for her sake." He adds immediately, earning a death glare from me. I know they were right to be suspicious and I should be too but I just didn't have it in me to distrust Tayo. The fact that she went to see Justice Onuh definitely worried me but not in the same way it worried them. They are worried that she might have switch

Chapter thirteen: Getting stood up.
Omotayo "Tayo I swear, you're a lost cause." Ini hisses in frustration, quickly dumping the rest of my clothes with her on my bed. "I know and agree that I'm a lost cause but Ini please, I beg you please help me out. I really don't know what to wear. You know I haven't invited a guy over in more than two years, so I'm a little rusty on things to do and my nerves are not helping me at all." I explain to her and she smiles, not the normal type of smile though. It's that smile you see on someone's face before they spout nonsense.  "Tayo be honest with me, do you like this guy?" She asks and I frown. "Like him bawo? I barely know the guy and we only just became friends." I reply defensively and she laughs, making me wonder when I made a joke or what part of what I said sounded funny.   "So he's just your friend and you woke up six in the morning to start cleaning the house. He's you

Chapter fourteen: Apology accepted.
Omotayo   After a while of sulking and fuming over a bad day, I decided to take a walk outside to clear my head and maybe get myself something to drink at the first corner shop I see. "Good evening madam." Torinto my gateman greets with his usual creepy smile. "Good evening Tori, how everything?" Chapter 15: The Plan.
Omotayo  The awkward silence in the room was suffocating and very uncomfortable for me but I ignored my itch to break the silence and continued to wait for Bayo's managing director, who was running a few minutes late. Ever since the issue we had on Saturday, I've avoided Bayo in every way possible. I blocked his number on WhatsApp, ignored most of his calls with the excuse that I was busy, which wasn't a complete lie if I'm being completely honest, but I would normally exaggerate how busy I was just to avoid talking to him and after a few more days of getting ignored, he stopped calling. A tiny part of me was hurt and I felt a little ignored at first but at the end of the day, I had no one to blame but myself. I'm the one with insecurities after all. "Good morning everyone. My apologies for arriving late." An unfamiliar voice greets, snapping me out of my depressing thoughts. "It's okay s

Chapter 16: Have lunch with me?
Omotayo  "Good afternoon miss." Bunmi greets the lightskin lady behind the table not too far from Chief's office. "Good afternoon Sir, how may I help you?" She asks with a small smile, batting her fake lashes repeatedly at him. "We're here to see chief Onuh, we have an appointment." He replied with a flirtatious smile and I scowl. Are they really doing this in front of me? How disrespectful! "He has been expecting you. You may go in." She tells us and without wasting any time or sparing one look at her, I walk away and happily pulled Bunmi with me. "Why did you pull me away like that?" He asked, sounding a little offended and I hiss. "Should I have left you there to keep smiling foolishly at the lady instead of focusing on why we're here?" I hiss back at him, earning an incoherent grumble from him but I simply ignored and walked towards chief's office.  &nbs

Chapter 17: Threatened.
Omotayo   My head hurt like a million nails had been pierced deep into my skull. I tried looking around me to decipher where in God's name I was but I got nothing. The room was way too dark and I could barely see anything at all. I gave up on trying too hard since it only worsened the excruciating ache I was dealing with at the moment. "HELLO! IS ANYBODY HERE?" I yell at the top of my lungs but the only sound I was met with was the constant reechoing of my own voice.   The fear I had tried to mask had overwhelmed me immediately and I couldn't help myself from panicking. I tried loosening the multiple ropes that was used to tie my hands behind a pillar but it was almost impossible and since my legs were also tied tightly, I was helpless and that only worsened my panic.  "SOMEBODY HELP ME!" I yell as loudly as I could again but like what happened the first time, my own cry for help came back to t

Chapter 18: Deal.
Omotayo.    It's being more than twenty four hours already but Kendrick was still a no show. The only person I had seen so far was his lap dog, whose name I still didn't know even after I attempted to talk to him and even offered to pay him triple of whatever he was getting from Kendrick an offer he refused immediately and he even stopped talking to me at some point.  He was obviously getting sick and tired of me since I had made it my mission to frustrate him but giving up was not something I planned on doing anytime soon.  "Why hasn't Kendrick shown up? It's been more than twenty four hours already." I whine childishly, earning a frustrated growl from my him.  "Just wait patiently and shut the hell up already!" He raised his voice angrily but I persist over and over again, getting immense joy from seeing the stress lines on his forehead. "I'm begging you miss, please

Chapter 19: Confrontation.
Adebayo.   Anger and fear were the only emotions that clouded my thoughts at the moment. I tried thinking positively and pushing any negative thought out of my head but I could not help the negative scenarios that kept popping up in my head. The only thing I could think of at the moment was Tayo's safety. The thought of her being in any kind danger at all scared the shit out of me."Bayo let's calm down first before jumping into any conclusions. You know we're still not sure if she was kidnapped or if she ran off on her own for personal reasons." Arin utters foolishly and I could not help the look of disgust that formed on my face. Is he being serious right now?   "Can you hear yourself bro? Are you really making any sense to yourself? Imagine your sister were in her shoes right now and then someone out there is still assuming she ran off, wouldn't you feel upset about it? You heard it yourself when I spoke wi
