Chapter 11 Acquiescence
Lucas unbuttoned his shirt. He cannot see any end on what he’s doing. The number of clients he accepts remain the same, but the amount of his work from scanning the applications and going through each background just to make sure that the their wish will be of personal use for their sinful desires took a heavy toll on him.   He rested his back on the chair and closed his eyes, he cannot believe that his Father made him do such awful job but refuses to give him four arms and omnipotence.   A knock on his door was heard, and Zera entered, carrying a pile of papers. Lucas grimaced. She carefully placed the papers above his table, and sat on the chair.   Lucas started scanning the newly-printed-still-warm applications.   “We cannot let humans interfere with our work,” Zera spoke, looking intently at Lucas.   “I believe I heard that for the

Chapter 12 Her Savior
Lucas went back to the mansion. He took big strides, walking hastily, like someone is catching him. He did not bother to knock or to give a sign of his presence and went straight to the living room. The old man was still sitting and drinking his tea, he was surprised to see Lucas again.   “Did you forget something?” he asked, but Lucas just launched and grabbed him by the collar. The man got scared to see Lucas’s face, it looked so angry, yet his lips formed a smile- a devilish smile. His eyes are burning with rage, like a predator ready to eat his prey.   “I am afraid that I need to take back a pinch of your happiness,” Lucas said and lifted him up in the air with his one hand.   “You dirty humans think they can get away with anything!” he yelled. “Look into my eyes!” Lucas spread fear on the whole room. His gold eyes beamed with anger and his lips twitched. He was r

Chapter 14 The Devil's Root
“We should head back,” Lucas announced, looking at Selene who’s in front of him.   The great weather from yesterday felt like they just have been given a chance to be happy for awhile. The light rain outside made the surrounding all gloomy today. There is not much to do inside the hotel aside from their facilities for recreational activities like billiards, a library, a bar and a rooftop pool. Selene was never a fan of any of those.   Selene rose her head and met Lucas’s worried eyes, she is sitting at the end of the bed while Lucas is on his knees facing her. She just got out from the bathroom, tired from the endless puking. She feels dizzy and she wants to do nothing but to lay in bed.   “It’s okay, I can manage. You can go outside and breathe some air,” she said with a coarse voice.   “I’s raining and it’s foggy outside, and I don’t like being alone.” L

Chapter 15 Wayward
“I can tell you’re not happy to see me,” the man stood up from the chair. His long dark cloak touching the floor. The tall and broad body figure of his Father made his ghoulish appearance even more horrifying. His bright red eyes boring on Lucas as he made his way in front of him. “I am just paying you a visit, Son.” His devilish smirk made Lucas furious. His fists are trembling with anguish. “Oh you think you can fool me, Samael? Of all creatures, your Son?!” Lucas scoffed. This made his Father laugh. Samael, the Angel of Death, the guardian of hell, the one who has the ultimatum for all the sinners, is Lucas’s Father. “I am amazed by how you got my…dubious trait,” he said, with so much amusement in his tone. Lucas turned around and walked to his chair, trying to control

Chapter 16 A New Start
“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dearest Selene…”   Selene laughed when she saw Faye and Calix in their party hats with polka dots design and puffy balls on top, walking towards her with a marvelous two-tier cake on their hand.   They are beside a lake located in one of the forests just meters far from the main road heading to their house. The sun is already dipping down in the horizon, meeting the glistening water of the lake, forming a beautiful sky in purples and oranges above. Calix was able to pitch a tent and set a table filled with Faye’s dishes.   “Make a wish,” Faye said and smiled, putting the cake in front of Selene.   Selene closed her eyes and made a wish, when she opened them, a candle was lit, waiting for her. She blew it and clapped her hands, her eyes felt moist.   “Come o

Chapter 17 Tenebris
“This paint is called Tenebris.” Selene’s voice from the mic sounded orotund, she held her script as she tries to stop her hand from trembling.   “My inspiration came from a metaphor of person who was struggling to see from the dark, and when she walked over, and over with no sense of direction, no sense of purpose, she saw a dot of light from afar.” Selene walked to the opposite side of the stage.   “And when she saw it, she started hoping, she started to run towards it, trying to chase it, all the time that she had been surrounded by darkness seemed insignificant.”   The audience was quiet, the spotlight casting on Selene was making her more nervous.   “But then, no matter how fast she run, or how long she had been running just to get closer to it, she realized that it was just her hallucination. With her fixation to get out from

Chapter 18 Ghosts of the Past
“Are you okay? You look very pale.” Sister Bella’s worried look met Selene when she came back inside the parish. Her eyes were all puffy and red and she was still staggering. Selene smiled at the nun and told her she was just praying and got really emotional, she thought that it’s lamest excuse she have ever given to someone in her whole life. “It’s okay to cry, He never judges anyone who’s talking to Him.” Sister Bella’s smile was warm, her laugh lines were eminent on her face but her features showed proof that she was a beautiful woman back in her days. Selene felt comfortable with her. “Are you ready to meet the church people, or do you need more time alone?” Selene shook her head. “It’s fine, Sister. I’ll go meet them,” she said, smiling. They we

Chapter 19 Devil in the Desert
Selene woke up to the noise coming from the outside of her window. She grunted in annoyance and covered her head with her pillow, but the laughters and chatters did not stop. Irritated, she sat up, yawning, her neck and back were in pain because she fell asleep in a wrong posture all night. She walked to her windows and her brows straightened when she saw the nuns and helpers decorating the small quadrangle in front of the church. Balloons and triangle banners in different hues of red, blue, and yellows filled the place, tightly tied on bamboos creating borders. Several long wooden tables were lined up and one by one, helpers filled them with snacks and food packed in styrofoam boxes. Selene took a quick shower and dressed in her comfortable clothes, she put her painting materials in one bag and headed downstairs. “Selene!” the priest called her, he was with several n

“Selene!”   Selene snapped back when someone held her arm, she looked on Faye, her eyes were worried.   “What happened? Are you okay?” she asked, but Selene cannot feel her tongue, her hands started to tremble and cold sweats formed on her forehead. She looked back to the backend of the church and there was no one there. Empty, no sign of life.   “Selene Madden, look at me!” Faye grabbed her at her shoulders and made Selene face her. “What happened??”   Selene blinked twice. “I-I’m sorry, there was someone..” she trailed off with her words, trying to regain herself. “There was someone back there, I heard someone called my name,” she said. Faye frowned at her.   “Look, let’s go. There was no one, okay?” Faye led her to the gate, rushing to get Selene out of the place. They drove off from the parish, and Selene was quiet the whole ride.
