Chapter 51

“Seriously, Alpha! I think you need to rethink this!”Sam, Charles, and I were in Silas’ office. He was, per usual, sitting behind his desk with his elbows on the table, and his fingers interlaced. All he was missing was a cat and we could have filmed a villain scene for James Bond with the aura he was giving off.“Sam, don’t question my decision.”“Alone? You’re sending Beta, alone, for three weeks in a completely different pack? Why? Send us! Charles and I can go! We’ve done trips in the past.”Silas growled. “Alpha Andrew isn’t as keen on the idea of a human mate for someone of your position. I chose Nate because there was no other choice.”It took every force I had in me not to roll my eyes. I was sitting down on the couch while Sam had gotten up from his chair. Charles, since he wasn’t actually leadership, just stayed quiet, leaning against th

Chapter 52

*** Silas’ POV *** I stood in the doorway watching as Charles put Nate’s duffle in his Jeep. Sam was standing next to the driver’s side door, arms crossed. Nate was talking to him, trying to calm him down after he worked himself up again. He was still upset, not so much that he was leaving alone, just that Nate wouldn’t fight me on it.It was odd all around. It had been for a while now. He just stopped; stopped talking, stopped fighting, and stopped even providing his opinion. It was unsettling to the point where I tried to push him more. Nate refused to be pushed, sighting he was just too tired. The other day in the gym was the first time I’d ever felt an Alpha presence from him. I knew his dad’s father was an Alpha. His grandfather married a Beta she-wolf. Nate’s father was right in the middle of their eight kids. He ended up having stronger Beta blood, and that extended down to Nate. It was the first time I felt Nate dip into more than just his Beta side. We’d yelled and fought a l

Chapter 53

Nate’s notebook lay open on my desk. I’d read through it this morning before having him sit down to pry an opinion out of him. As I flipped through the book, I got more and more irritated. He gave me exactly what I asked for and literally nothing else. The first few pages were the back and forth between him and Alpha Andrew. Nate wrote a note that it seemed like he wasn’t too keen on being close with our pack because of the alliances we kept. Not necessarily because we were planning on allowing anyone to work and live on the territory. Initially, he was cautious and hesitant. Testing the waters at what Nate would bend on.Really, this all was within Nate’s element. It’s the reason why I always chose him for this kind of trip. Nate had a charisma that was undeniable. He also was good at reading people, knowing when to give and take. After a couple of days, Alpha Andrew outlined the final agreement and signed two copies of the docum

Chapter 54

Suddenly, I felt the power shift in me. It wasn’t mine though; it was Eros. He felt larger, stronger in my mind. As though he pulled the power that we shared as one to him. He threw me back and slammed a wall up in my face.‘I am all Alpha. I have no need for magic, giving me a false sense of power. I am everything you hold. Without me, you would be a meager human, Silas Penn. Get your head screwed back on.’True darkness and silence engulfed me. I beat against the wall. Clawing at it with my hands, kicking it, and throwing my weight into it. Right now, I was a good as human to him. He pulled a power shift that I didn’t think was possible.Falling to the floor, I tried to remember the most annoying songs I could. Still, there was nothing. I was stuck. Eventually, whatever he did would snap back to normal. Waiting it out was apparently my only option.‘Alright! I’m sorry! I won’t…hurt him.&rsquo

Chapter 55

Opening my eyes, I blinked as I took in my surroundings. I was on the floor. My back was against a wall and bars surrounded me. I was in the dungeon. When Nate showed us the underground dungeon, it was a stretch of the word. It looked way nicer than anything I had ever seen. He’d also added fortifications to everything and even added more space where we would have space to set up for information extraction. We hadn’t needed it for a while, but we had used it before. On the other side of the bars, Nate was curled up in a chair. The way his head rested on his knee and his eyes closed told me he was asleep. How, in that position, I didn’t know. He looked exhausted and pale.Rolling my shoulders back, I stood and stretched. My body felt a little sore, but it wasn’t bad. I rubbed my chest and stopped when I realized I was rubbing where the runes usually were. Looking down, I was surprised to find smooth skin beneath my fingers. The runes com

Chapter 56

Leaning against the wall with my arms crossed over my chest, I watched Shep work on Nate. He sat on the bed, his eyes closed while Shep applied ointment and bandages. Charles stepped away, feeling smug that he won without having to eat the precooked packet of everything that was artificially available in the country.“Need I remind you, Beta, these will not heal normally.”“Yeah, Doc.”Shep clicked his tongue. “Sometimes I wonder if maybe you are stuck in a loop.”Nate’s eyes opened, but he didn’t look up at Shep. “It’s not on purpose, at least. Not this time.”Sighing, Shep moved Nate’s head to the side and started on the last large gash on his shoulder. “Considering the wounds were inflicted well over twenty-four hours ago, all of this could have become infected.”“They didn’t hurt that bad. I thought I would be fine.”He huffed. &l

Chapter 57 - Aelia's Letter #2

My sweetest Nate, Now that the initial shock of my first letter has (hopefully) worn off. We need to have a serious discussion about your bond. I know you might think it’s way too late for this. I should have told you from the start. I can even image the deadpanned look on your face while reading this. I promise, though, this wouldn’t be necessary if you weren’t able to survive the initial bonding. This letter would get returned and all this information will be lost until someone else stumbles upon it. Or has the same power I ended up with. Initially, I was looking into too recent of texts when I was digging into bonds. There were mentions and glimpses of a stronger bond, but it was all conjecture. Nothing…solid. But those were what my grubby little eight-year-old hands could get ahold of. I had limitations. Between my understanding and resources, it was so na

Chapter 58

*** Nate’s POV *** “You sure you’re going to be okay?” Sam was fussing over me and I smiled, shaking my head.“I’ll be fine, Sam. Go. It’s really not bad. Try to relax and just enjoy yourself. Take some time for the two of you. Observations aren’t something that you sit there staring at everyone like creepers.” I raised my eyebrow at him.Sam scoffed, but I could see the nerves in face. “Right. Yeah. Because…that would be weird.”Laughing, I pulled him into a hug for a second. “You’ll be fine. Have fun. Relax. It’s only a week.”Pulling his mate back, Charles gave me a hug. “Remember to eat. I have Mer making sure she keeps an eye on you.”“Yeah, yeah. I can survive without you.”“Sure. If we come back and you’ve lost more weight, I&

Chapter 59

“How dare you. You think you wouldn’t get attacked? That some other Alpha wouldn’t decide that he liked everything here and would try to take over? What do you think would happen if word got out that your Alpha was leaving for six months?”I shrugged at Silas who was breathing like an angry bull in a children’s cartoon. “Who would tell? You wouldn’t. You know you need a pack to come back to. If you told everyone you were leaving for six months, you wouldn’t be allowed back. None of us would say anything because we are perfectly capable of functioning without you.”Taking a breath, I continued. “You are trying to act so high and mighty. Do you know how many times I’ve heard you call out that ‘you are Alpha’? Like you have to remind everyone because you know that if you weren’t Alpha, the coffee shop would still open, our pack would still go to their jobs, the pups would go to sc

Chapter 60

As I flushed the toilet, my office bathroom door slammed open. Spinning around, Silas was standing in the door. I rolled my eyes and moved over to the sink, washing my hands.“Can I help you, Silas?”“So what, you’re sick now?”Grabbing some mouthwash, I swished two separate shots of it before finishing up. I raised my eyebrow, and he finally moved out of the doorway so I could walk back into the office. He stalked me as I grabbed my cane and leaned against the front of my desk.“What did you need?” I asked again.“I asked you a question, Beta. Are you sick? Is that why you look like you’re half dead already?”Sighing, I shook my head. “I’m really not in the mood for this right now. I’m fine. Why are you here in my office?”“I have just about had it with you. You can’t walk. You can’t shift. Now, you’re sick all the time? I know
