SKY The pounding of my heart is so strong that, it feels like thunder rolling through my body. Each beat echoes in my ears, urging me to move faster. I keep glancing over my shoulder every few seconds, searching the shadows between the trees. They’re out there. I can sense them.I push into a steady jog, my shoes crunching against the carpet of dried leaves covering the forest floor. If I don’t keep running, they’ll catch me. Somehow, no matter how many different routes I take through these woods, they always manage to find me.But not tonight. I can’t let them catch me again.I’ve always been fast, but when they corner me, there’s no escape. Five against one—those are terrible odds for anyone. They’re too strong when they hunt together, and I can’t take the pain they bring anymore.I stretch my stride, leaping over roots and fallen logs. The woods of Silver Forest close around me, dark and endless, but I’m only a few miles from the Silver Moon Pack’s headquarters. If I can just make

SKY He’s broken my spine. I heard it snap....a horrible, dry crunch that echoed through my bones. I can barely breathe. The pain burns through me like fire, spreading down my back.“Right blood?” Lamen sneers. I don’t even know what he means. He says it all the time, but never explains. Maybe it’s just his twisted way of reminding me I don’t belong.I’m doomed. Completely and utterly doomed. The only thing that’s ever kept me sane is burying my head in my books. Now, I can’t even stand.“And stay down, weakling, before I snap your arm next,” Aria growls. Her voice drips with cruel amusement. That’s her version of a compliment, I guess.I stay where I am, face down in the mud, trying not to move. The pain is unbearable. My back feels like it’s been ripped apart, and I can’t stop the sobs that escape me. Why don’t they want me in the pack? Why do they hate me so much?I’ve asked my father the same thing so many times. “Lamen bullies me, Father. He hurts me. Can’t you make him stop? Why

SKY I somehow make it through two whole days without any trouble from Lamen and his friends. It feels like a miracle, but I know it won't last. This morning's Silver Moon Pack meeting is bound to change that. When I step into the large hall where the pack gathers, I keep my head low and slip into a seat at the back. My shoulders hunch forward as if hiding will make me invisible. Wolves fill the room quickly-chairs scraping, low voices rumbling, the familiar scent of fur and pine mixing in the air.At the front, my father, Lucien Silver, stands tall behind the podium, his presence commanding as always. Around him, the Silver Moon elders sit in a half-circle, their serious faces giving away nothing. I twist my fingers nervously in my lap, my stomach in knots as I wait for Lamen and his crew to appear.A few pack members I barely know take seats beside me. They're polite but distant, and I don't try to talk. The Silver Moon wolves are calm and respectable-good, loyal people, but to me,

SKYI take one last look in the mirror, studying the messy bun I learned to do from a video online. It isn't perfect, but it will have to do for tonight. My fingers smooth the soft fabric of my midnight-blue dress - the one I bought with months of tips and savings from Jersey Store, the small café where I've worked for years. Every coin I've saved went into this dress, though if I could trade it for a real friend in the pack, I would in a heartbeat. My green eyes shimmer under the faint light, that same emerald glow that never seems to dull, even when I'm hurting inside. A little makeup makes my pale skin glow, and I swipe a clear gloss over my lips before stepping out into the night air. My heels click softly as I cross the courtyard toward the Silver Moon Pack hall, my pulse quickening with each step. The hall is draped with silver and blue streamers that shimmer under the light. Wolves of all ranks fill the room, laughing, talking, waiting. My heart races as I step inside. Nobody t

DAMIEN Crack! I drop low, using the strength in my back leg to drive my punch harder into my brother Rylan Rock’s ribs. “You don’t own the west side. I do!” I shout, my voice rough with anger. There’s no backing down now, not with him. If I let up for even a second, he’ll hit me from behind. That’s what Rylan does. He’s sneaky like that.I push my hair out of my face, squinting through the parking lot lights as I size him up. He’s furious, too mad to fight smart. I move lightly on my feet, staying in my stance, spitting out the blood that’s collecting in my mouth. My crew stands close by, watching, waiting.“Damien, don’t hold back!” Kellan calls out, his teeth flashing in a wild grin. “You know his weak side. Light him up!” Kellan’s part of the rebellion, the small group I’ve been leading. It’s a rough crew, but they’ve got my back.“Shut up, Kellan,” Rylan snaps, blood dripping from his mouth. He looks so much like me—same sharp jaw, same dark eyes, but taller by an inch. He’s buil

DAMIEN Rylan groaned and rolled on the ground, clutching his back after our sparring match. I could hear his whining, and it almost made me laugh. Behind me, Drake and Nova rubbed my shoulders, hyping me up after the fight.“Come on, man. You had him,” Drake whispered, thinking my father couldn’t hear. But Gareth heard everything. He always did.“Drake, that’s enough,” he barked. “You’re going with Damien this morning. I want the full collection from every single business. And if you come back short, you’ll be washing dishes in the kitchen for a week. Got it?”Drake’s jaw tightened. He wasn’t dumb enough to argue. “Got it,” he muttered.Gareth turned back to Rylan, reaching down to pull him to his feet. I couldn’t help smirking. Rylan’s face was already swollen from the punch I’d landed. His jaw looked like it had been hit with a hammer, and he could barely stand straight. Good. Served him right for messing with me.Rylan shot me a dark look just before Gareth started scolding him.“

SKY I can’t stop trembling. My legs feel weak, and I honestly think I might faint. I’m mated to Lamen. My true mate.I stare at myself in the mirror, shaking my head again and again, trying to make it feel real. The same Lamen who used to hurt me, who pushed my face into the dirt so many times I know exactly how it tastes.Biting my bottom lip, I walk carefully through the corridors of the Silver Moon Pack house. My heart races as I prepare for the mating ceremony. This is a big moment, and I’m not sure I’m ready. I came to the hall early because I need a few minutes alone to take it all in.I didn’t dress too fancy tonight. I wanted something simple, something I can easily take off when I have to run. I take a deep breath, trying to calm myself, when suddenly, two warm hands slide around me from behind, making me jump. Then a soft kiss lands on my bare shoulder.“Hey,” Lamen murmurs close to my ear. “Nervous about tonight?”“Yes,” I whisper, trembling as his hair brushes against the

SKYI can’t stop giggling as I stumble into the open air, Lamen’s lips brushing across my skin in a trail of eager kisses. My body feels like it’s on fire, even though it’s almost midnight. The night air is cool, but it does nothing to calm the heat spreading through me.Lamen’s teeth graze my neck, a little harder than I expect.“Ouch! What was that for?” I laugh, pushing him away lightly. “That actually hurt.”The moon above is full and glowing, flooding the world in silver light. Its reflection paints the path leading toward the Sequoia Trail. It’s one of the harder trails to follow, rough and winding, which is probably why I don’t go there often. I reach up to my neck and feel something warm and sticky. My fingers come away with a dark smear.“Did you draw blood?” I gasp, staring at Lamen. His eyes burn with wild desire, the black of his pupils almost swallowing the color around them.“Just a small bite,” he murmurs, voice low and thick. “It’s nothing. Are you ready for the night

SKYI know what tonight means. I’m supposed to mate with Lamen. It will be my first time, and though I’ve never gone that far before, at least I know how to kiss. Still, a strange feeling creeps over me. Why is the rest of the Silver Moon Pack with him? Why are they watching?I start to run. My heart hammers in my chest, and my legs feel like they might give out at any moment. My wolf follows, but she’s slowing down. She looks back over her shoulder, uneasy. Lamen is coming fast—too fast. His golden eyes gleam through the forest, catching flashes of moonlight as he races closer. I can hear his heavy breathing. It’s getting louder. My wolf is trembling, her paws unsteady on the ground. Something feels terribly wrong. Then I see them. Four wolves running beside him, their shapes gliding through the trees. My chest tightens. What’s happening? Why are they here? I stop running and face them, frozen with confusion and fear. They fan out around me, forming a wide circle. Their growls rumble

SKYIt must be hours later when the cold bite of the night air wakes me. I blink open my eyes and realize I’m human again. My head throbs so badly that it feels like drums beating inside my skull. When I try to lift it, I feel the rough scrape of dried leaves sticking to my cheek and the crust of blood clinging to my lashes.I wince as I raise my head a little, the metallic taste of blood thick on my tongue. The sharp sting across my stomach forces me to drop back to the ground. I’m alive. That’s the first thing I tell myself. Alive. Step one complete. The pain is still there, but it’s not as unbearable as when they tore into me. I can’t shift back into my wolf; I don’t have the strength. I’m not even sure if I can control it anymore. That night, my body had changed on its own, pulled by the full glow of the midnight moon. After several shaky tries, I push myself up, but my legs give way and I fall, crying quietly into the dirt. My wolf’s voice stirs deep within me, strong and sure. G
