The letter from Eleanor arrived again in autumn. Not a new letter—the same one. The eighty-two-year-old woman from Vermont had written to me twice more since that first spring, updating me on her garden, her grief, her slow return to the land of the living. Her handwriting had grown shakier with each envelope, but her voice remained steady.Dear Daphne,I planted a rosebush today. Pink, like yours. The woman at the nursery said it wouldn't survive the Vermont winter, but I bought it anyway. Sometimes hope is more important than expertise. My daughter visited last week. She brought my grandson—a boy with your dog's name, can you believe it? Lucky, they call him. Not after your dog, she said. After the feeling.I told her about your books. About the garden. About the woman who taught me that it's never too late to start over. She asked to borrow them. I said no. I'm not ready to share with you yet.Maybe next year.—EleanorI read the letter twice. Then I folded it carefully and tucked

The rosebush grew tall.Ten years after Lucky died, it had climbed the south wall, tangled itself around the trellis, and claimed a corner of the garden as its own. The blooms were pink—the same pink as the roses in my fourth book, the same pink as the dress I'd worn to Clara's wedding, the same pink as the sunset over the mountains on the night Celeste first said she loved me."I think it's trying to take over," Celeste said.We were in the garden, as we always were on summer evenings. Her hands were covered in soil. Her hair was entirely silver now, and she wore it in a braid that fell over her shoulder."I think it's succeeding.""Should we cut it back?""Absolutely not."She smiled. "I thought you'd say that."We sat on the stone wall, side by side, watching the roses sway in the evening breeze. The mountains were purple in the distance. The lake was calm."Fifteen years," I said."Fifteen years since what?""Since the gala. Since you sent a drink across a crowded room and watched

The first week, I didn't leave the houseMireille was dead. Emilia was dead. Celeste was dead. The garden was full of roses that I couldn't bear to look at. The kitchen was full of coffee that I couldn't bear to drink. The bed was full of empty space where her body had been.Lucky the Fourth—because of course there was Lucky the Fourth, a small grey terrier we'd adopted two years ago, when we'd still been able to walk a dog—sat beside me on the couch. He didn't demand walks. Didn't demand food. Just sat, his head on my knee, his eyes watching."You're the only one left," I told him.He thumped his tail."Don't get smug about it."He thumped his tail again.---The letters arrived anyway. The postman didn't know that my wife had died. The publisher didn't know. The readers certainly didn't know. They sent their hopes and their fears and their gratitude to the same address, and the mail piled up in the foyer, unopened, unacknowledged. On the eighth day, I opened one.Dear Daphne,I'm wr

Ten years after Lucia moved into the house, the garden had stopped being a responsibility and started being a conversation. She talked to the roses the way Daphne had written about—not expecting answers, but not ruling them out either. The pink ones along the south wall had grown thick as a hedge, their blooms so heavy that branches bent to the ground. The lavender had migrated across the entire eastern border, a purple sea that hummed with bees in summer. The vegetable patch had become a meadow, self-seeded and wild, producing tomatoes that volunteers from the village came to harvest.Lucia had stopped trying to control any of it. She pruned only what was necessary, watered only when the drought was severe, and otherwise let the garden be what it wanted to become."The roses know what they're doing," she said to the dog.Lucky the Sixth—a small terrier mix with one ear that flopped and one that stood at attention—wagged his tail. He was seven years old now, grey around the muzzle, sl

Amira buried Lucia beneath the white rose. Not beside it—beneath it. The roots had grown deep over the years, twisting through the soil where six dogs and three women already rested. Amira dug the hole herself, her hands blistered, her back aching. Lucky the Ninth watched from the stone wall, his small grey face unreadable."You could help," she told him.He wagged his tail."Useless," she said. But she was smiling. When the hole was deep enough, she and two neighbors from the village lowered Lucia's body into the earth. There was no coffin—Lucia had requested none. She wanted to become part of the garden, she'd said. Wanted the roses to feed on her bones."That's morbid," Amira had told her."That's honest.""Both can be true."They'd laughed. Now Amira stood alone by the grave, the neighbors gone, the sun setting over the mountains."I'll take care of them," she said again. "The letters. The garden. The story."The white rose swayed in the breeze."And the dog. I'll take care of the
