Adriana the Second had not expected to stay. She had come to the garden as a pilgrim, drawn by her grandmother's stories, by the name that had always felt like a warning she was meant to ignore. She had expected to stay a year, maybe two. She had expected to pay her respects and return to Lisbon, to the small studio overlooking the Tagus River, to the life she had been building before the pull of the garden became impossible to ignore. But the garden had other plans."I'm staying," she told the photograph of her grandmother—the one who had named her after a woman who warned Daphne to run, the one who had believed that sometimes the bravest thing was to stand still. The photograph didn't answer. But somewhere, in the wind, she felt something that might have been approval.---The first year was the hardest. Not because the work was difficult—Adriana had grown up helping her grandmother in a small plot behind their apartment, had learned that tomatoes needed more sun than they ever got.

Celeste the Second had been at the garden for twelve years when the letter arrived that changed everything. Not a letter from a reader—those came every day, stacked in boxes, waiting to be answered. This letter was different. Handwritten. No return address. The paper was thick, expensive, the kind that people used for announcements that mattered. She opened it in the study, Lucky the Twenty-Fourth asleep at her feet. The morning light was grey—autumn again, or maybe winter. The seasons had begun to blur, each one a gift she no longer took for granted.Dear Keeper of the Garden,I'm writing to tell you that I'm the last one. The last Clara. The ninth. My grandmother was the eighth Clara. She wrote to you before she died. She told me about the garden—about the roses, about the letters, about the women who stayed.I'm coming to find you.—Clara the NinthCeleste read the letter three times. Then she set it on the desk and looked out the window. The mountains were pink with sunset. The ro

Daphne the Third had been at the garden for ten years when she understood what the first Daphne had meant about standing still. It wasn't about physical stillness. It was about the kind of stillness that came from no longer running. From no longer waiting for the other shoe to drop. From waking up each morning and knowing—really knowing—that this was where she was supposed to be."I'm not going anywhere," she told Lucky the Thirty-Sixth.The dog—a small golden retriever, the latest in the endless line—wagged his tail. He was young, still tripping over his own feet, still learning that roses were not for eating."You'll learn," Daphne told him. "Eventually."The dog ate a rose leaf."Eventually," Daphne repeated.---The garden had grown wilder under her care. Not because she was a bad gardener—because she had learned, from Clara the Ninth, that roses knew what they were doing. They didn't need to be pruned into submission. They needed to be trusted. The crimson rose had spawned a doze

Nadia had been at the garden for fifteen years when she published her book. She called it The Keepers' Garden: A Century of Staying. It was not a novel—it was a history. A record. A love letter to the women who had come before her. She had spent years in the attic, reading the letters, sorting through the photographs, tracing the lineage of keepers from the first Daphne to the third Celeste. The publisher was skeptical. "A book about a garden? About women no one has heard of?""People have heard of them," Nadia said. "They just don't know it yet."The book came out in the autumn. The reviews were quiet—not the bestseller lists, not the talk shows. But the letters came. They always came.A woman in Chile wrote that she had named her daughter after Clara the Ninth. A man in Sweden wrote that he had planted a rose for his dead wife. A teenager in Canada wrote that Nadia's book had made her believe that she could stay somewhere, too.Nadia answered them all.She wrote by hand, the way Cel

Hana the Third had been at the garden for thirty years when she stopped counting the dogs. Not because she didn't love them—she did. Every Lucky, from the thirty-ninth to the forty-eighth, had been a companion, a confidant, a small warm body at the foot of her bed. But the numbers had blurred, the way the years had blurred, the way the roses had blurred into a single tapestry of color and memory. She sat on the stone wall, watching the sunset. The mountains were pink. The dusty rose was blooming, its petals soft as twilight, quiet as memory."I'm old," she told Lucky the Forty-Eighth.The dog—a small golden retriever, the latest in the endless line—wagged his tail. He was old too, his muzzle white, his joints stiff. They had grown old together."We're old," Hana corrected. The dog wagged his tail again."Don't agree with me so enthusiastically."---The dusty rose had spawned a dozen offspring. Its branches had spread across the vegetable patch, across the stone wall, across the found
