Chapter 1

The trauma from my past had given me claustrophobia. It was getting worse by the minute. I was curled up in the corner with my head buried in my arms when the lights snapped back on.Herman stood in the doorway, grinning. "Hey, you didn't cry this time. That's progress."I lifted my head. My voice wouldn't stop shaking."Herman, do you know that extreme fear can kill someone? I've been afraid of the dark and water since I was a child. I can't stand being alone in small spaces. You know all of this. The wolfsbane poisoning also left me weak. I have to take medication every single day."You know that better than anyone, don't you?"Herman cast his phone to the TV and started a horror movie."Of course I know. But you can't be scared forever. Werewolves are supposed to be strong, both physically and mentally. You won't survive in a pack like this. Besides, I turned the lights back on for you, didn't I?"He walked over, stroked my hair, and pulled me into his arms. "Joey, fear is only temp

I squeezed my eyes shut and covered my ears, but I could still hear the terrible sounds coming from the TV.Clara clapped excitedly and turned around to shove me. "Joey, look! That guy's head just got crushed by the train! So exciting!"I didn't dare open my eyes. Even with my ears covered, I could still hear her."Look!"When I still wouldn't lift my head, Herman yanked me up and dragged me in front of the TV. He gripped my chin and forced my face up. His voice was cold and merciless."Clara is training you, and you can't even appreciate it. Just watch. It's good for you!"I had no choice but to open my eyes. On the screen, a body was being crushed in the darkness. Blood was everywhere."Ah! Ahhh!" I shrieked in terror, struggling to pull back, but Herman's hands clamped down on my shoulders and held me in place.Behind me, I heard them both laughing."What a coward. It's just a movie and you're still scared. Pathetic!""Werewolves are supposed to have incredible mental strength. And

That night, the shock caught up with me, and I spiked a high fever.Through the haze, I saw my mother, Eleanor. She had come to take care of me, even though I rarely spent time with her. I had been living in Herman's pack all along.I regretted leaving her alone for a man who wasn't worth it.A knock came at the door. Herman appeared, bringing the cold air in with him, carrying several kinds of medicine. When he saw I was awake, he rushed over and took my hand. "You're finally up."He touched my forehead and handed me some medicine and water. "Your fever's going down. Take some more medicine and you'll be fine."He squeezed my hand tightly. "You scared me to death. I waited for you for so long, and your phone was off."I thought you'd passed out on the side of the road again, like last time."Once, I'd lost my keys and couldn't get home. I was too scared to be alone, so I wandered the streets instead.I happened upon two werewolves fighting over territory, blood everywhere, and it frig

I walked all night. When I got back to the pack, Herman was waiting on the sofa, his face dark. Clara sat beside him. When he saw me walk in, he gave me a cold look. "Joey, was that text supposed to be a threat? I'm training you, and you repay me by wanting to break up?"Clara tapped my forehead with one finger. "Joey, you really went too far this time. We're trying to help you. Being scared won't solve anything. You need to face things yourself."She pursed her lips, looking disappointed. "Are you mad at me because Herman spent Christmas building a snowman with me? If that bothers you, I'll stay away from him. I don't want to get in the way of your relationship."She turned to leave, but Herman caught her arm. "Where are you going? We didn't do anything wrong. She's just making a big deal out of nothing."Then he looked at me and softened his tone. "Fine, Joey. It's all my fault, okay? Happy now?"He showed me a set of floor plans. "This is the house I'm actually buying. It's on the e

On the plane, I scrolled through my phone and spotted a new post on Instagram.Several photos of a romantic candlelit dinner. The last one showed his hand clasped tightly with hers. No caption, but the intimacy said everything.I stared at the photos, strangely calm. Then, just before takeoff, I pulled out my SIM card and snapped it in half.At that same moment, Clara sat in the city's most expensive restaurant, cutting into a thousand-dollar steak. A barely touched glass of Lafite sat beside her. "Herman, I'm suddenly craving the cod. I don't really want steak anymore."She pushed her half-eaten steak onto Herman's plate and took his cod instead. Herman glanced at it, put down his knife and fork, and left it untouched."Let's go to the haunted house again." At Clara's suggestion, Herman raised an eyebrow. "Didn't you say it was boring?"Clara blinked playfully. "Well, not exactly. We only left early that day to train Joey, remember?"Herman frowned and checked his phone. No messages f

Clara quickly smiled. "She did. She said she's resting at home and doesn't feel like going out. She's probably ignoring you because she's mad. You know Joey. She just wants you to make it up to her. Herman, you're supposed to be having fun with me. Lighten up, okay?"She linked her arm through his and pulled him forward. Herman didn't think twice about it. What Clara said made sense.Joey did throw little tantrums to get his attention. All he had to do was apologize properly, and things would go back to normal."Fine. I'll go with you."After the haunted house, Clara wanted to go shopping. She went from one luxury store to another while Herman followed, paying for everything without a second thought. Then he spotted a ruby bracelet in a display case.Joey had once told him how much she wanted one. He quietly bought it and slipped the box into his pocket.Once Joey saw this bracelet, she'd stop being angry. Herman took that for granted. The next afternoon, Herman drove to Joey's place w

When I returned to the pack, I told Dad that Mom had passed away.He didn't sleep that night. The next day, we buried her together. He stroked my hair and told me not to grieve too long. I was the heir of the Starlight Pack. There would be more hardships ahead. Then he began arranging blind dates for me.As I reached the coffee shop, someone grabbed my hand.Herman looked haggard. Even his shirt was buttoned wrong. His eyes swept over me as questions poured out. "Joey, where are you living now? Is someone with you?"He touched my hair, his voice thick and nasal. "Were you afraid walking at night? Did you go near any water? Are you feeling okay? You flew all that way by yourself. I can't even imagine how you got through it."I remembered when he'd pulled me from the river after I nearly drowned. He'd held me close and rubbed my back.He told me not to be afraid. He said he would always be with me.Same voice. Same worried face. Yet this was also the man who had abandoned me again and ag

When I left my father's company, Herman was waiting outside. He held out the box I'd left behind, his voice careful and tentative. "Joey, I went through these things. They're all precious memories of us. I kept them safe, which means...""Which means what we had was in the past."Herman fell silent but refused to give up. He pulled out the ruby bracelet from his jacket. "Joey, you said you loved this bracelet, remember? I bought it for you. See? I still remember what you like."I gave him a faint smile. "Yes, you remembered all my fears, too. And you used each one to make it worse.""Joey!" Herman scrubbed his hands over his face in anguish. "What do I have to do for you to forgive me? If it's about Clara, I've already banished her from the pack. Stop going on these blind dates and come back to me. I swear I'll change."I'd rejected him enough times. There was nothing left to say. After that day, Herman waited near my home and my office every morning and evening. He followed me at a di

"Engaged?""Yes." I nodded. "I accepted the blind date my father arranged. He's the Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack. You saw him at the coffee shop."Herman stared at me in disbelief. "But Joey, I know I was wrong. I've accepted everything you've put me through these past few days. Just please, don't give up on us."His voice was openly pleading. "Please... don't leave me behind..."My heart was perfectly still. His remorse didn't move me. "Herman, you were the one who gave up on us. You were the one who left me behind."After that day, I never saw Herman again. But he texted me every day.The messages continued right up until my wedding day. The grand ceremony uniting two packs lasted from morning until night.Among the guests, I spotted a familiar figure. Herman stood motionless in the corner in a suit. He hadn't moved since the ceremony began.During the ring exchange, I saw him clench his fists and take a step forward. Then he stopped. His eyes were red, his face tight with grief.Su
