Chapter 1

I pushed myself upright in the hospital bed. A crushing pain spread through my chest. On the livestream, the host’s smile stiffened, but he recovered quickly.“Dr. Carter, perhaps you didn’t hear the question clearly.”He looked back at the display and read it again, carefully this time.“What do the letters AI stand for? This may be the easiest question we’ve asked tonight. You don’t need any of your specialized knowledge. We only need the commonly accepted full term.”My mother blinked once. Her voice remained perfectly confident.“Alien Internet.”The host’s expression changed completely. My brother Ethan stood beside her at the contestants’ podium, shaking his head frantically.“Mom, that isn’t right. The answer is Artificial Intelligence. You’ve worked in AI for twenty years. There’s no way you don’t know this.”My father, Daniel, had broken out in a sweat.“Evelyn, are you overwhelmed? Did you misspeak?”Mother ignored them and repeated calmly, “My answer is Alien Internet.”The

The studio went silent.Several seconds later, Mother added slowly, “Of course, the actual answer is Artificial Intelligence. I was careless just now.”But the round was over. The one million dollars would not return simply because she had finally spoken the correct words.Pain tore through my chest. I curled forward as the cardiac monitor sounded an urgent alarm. A doctor rushed to inspect the readings while the nurse held my hand and told me to stay awake. On the screen, Ethan lunged toward Mother.“What are you doing? You knew the answer. Chloe could die because you threw away that money.”Mother did not answer him. Instead, she pointed toward the screen behind her.“Do you see how much pain she’s in?”Ethan stared at her: “You know she’s suffering, and you still answered incorrectly on purpose?”“I made a mistake,” Mother said, as composed as ever. “People make careless mistakes under pressure. That is perfectly normal.”“That wasn’t carelessness. You gave two different wrong answe

The studio erupted. How could anyone need help remembering her own birthday?A terrible thought took hold of me. Mother had aged visibly since my diagnosis. She spent night after night reading medical studies, and strands of white had appeared at her temples. Perhaps prolonged stress really had affected her memory. It was the last excuse I ever made for her.Mother selected Dad as her outside contact. When the line connected, he answered without hesitation.“January eighth. Your birthday is January eighth.”Mother nodded and reached for the confirmation button, but Ethan stopped her.“Mom, did you hear him?” He held her gaze. “Repeat the date.”“January eighth.”“Again.”“January eighth.”“One more time.”Open irritation crossed her face.“Ethan, I heard him perfectly. My birthday is January eighth.”Only then did he lower his hand.Still, Mother did not submit the answer. The ten-minute clock continued to run.Nine minutes and twenty seconds.Eight minutes and forty-three.First she a

My heart stopped before the prize money reappeared. The resuscitation team rushed into my room. A doctor began chest compressions while a nurse pushed epinephrine into my IV. The numbers on the monitor did not recover.“Prepare to defibrillate.”Electricity surged through my body. My back lifted from the mattress, then fell hard against it.Still no heartbeat. The attending physician continued compressions while ordering the hospital to contact the private cardiac center immediately. The treatment I needed was not a routine operation. It was an experimental procedure that public insurance did not cover. St. Joseph’s could provide emergency stabilization, but the private center could not dispatch an air ambulance, prepare specialized blood products, or assemble the surgical team without a financial guarantee and transfer authorization. The game show’s financial department was ready to wire the money directly to the center.Mother refused to sign the electronic authorization.“Why?” Dad’

Mother stared at the nurse as if the words belonged to a language she did not understand.“Who died?”“Chloe Carter,” the nurse said gently. There was no room for confusion in her answer. “The team performed CPR for forty-seven minutes, but she never regained a spontaneous heartbeat. Her time of death was 4:17 p.m.”Mother lowered her eyes to the cashier’s check. If it had arrived twenty minutes earlier, it might have saved me. Now it was only a piece of paper.“No.” She shook her head. “She was speaking to us on the video call. She was conscious. She was making sense. A person doesn’t simply die.”Dad closed his eyes, and the last color drained from his face. Ethan braced one hand against the wall as though it were the only thing keeping him upright. My spirit hovered outside the room. I could see them, but I could no longer make a sound.Mother grabbed the nurse’s arm.“Where is Chloe? I want to see her.”The nurse led them to the morgue. The corridor was long and cold. Mother’s pace

The hospital carried out my wishes.Because the tumor had severely damaged my heart, the organs eligible for donation were limited. My corneas and several tissues could be used. The rest of my body was returned intact to my family, just as the consent specified. No one forced Mother to watch the procedure. What destroyed her was the fact that she had no power to interfere. She could not withdraw my consent or order the doctors to wait for her approval. She had spent years arranging every detail of our lives. Now all she could do was sit in the corridor while documents bearing my name passed in front of her.Dad sat far away from her. Ethan never looked in her direction. When the donation process was complete, the coordinator told them that my corneas would help two patients regain their sight.Mother bowed her head and remained silent for a long time.At last, she asked, “Was Chloe afraid when she signed?”“She was very weak,” the nurse said, “but completely lucid.”“Did she say anythi

Mother’s mental health deteriorated quickly. She stopped going to the institute and refused to see her colleagues. Every morning at 3:27, she woke from the same nightmare. That was the time the first prize had disappeared. She would open her computer and replay the livestream. The host asked, “What do the letters AI stand for?”Her recorded voice answered, “Alien Internet.”Sitting alone in the dark, Mother repeated the correct answer.“Artificial Intelligence.”“Artificial Intelligence.”As if enough repetitions could restart the clock.Dad and Ethan contacted a psychiatrist. After an evaluation, Mother entered a secure treatment facility. At first, she refused to cooperate.“I study decision failure. I know exactly what is happening to me.”The doctor asked only one question.“Knowing what is happening and accepting help are two different things. Which one are you doing?”For once, Mother had no answer.Treatment continued for more than two months. Then, late one night, Mother used h

Mother returned to treatment. She never resumed her former position. When the investigation ended, she acknowledged what she had done during the livestream and refused to blame stress or conflict within the family. At the formal hearing, she made a brief statement.“I knew the correct answer to every question. I also understood what the doctors’ warnings meant. But I believed I had the right to decide what lesson my family needed to learn.”She looked down at her hands.“I loved my daughter, but I placed my judgment above her life. Love does not change that.”Neither Dad nor Ethan spoke on her behalf. Dad filed for divorce. Ethan returned to school but would no longer see Mother alone. Occasionally, he attended family therapy with a clinician present. They did not recover quickly, and they did not pretend that life had returned to normal. Some consequences remain even after the person responsible is sincerely sorry.Mother eventually began working for a nonprofit that studied the ethic
