I stood in front of a mirror and admired my outfit for the tenth time. I had to look my best because today is the womenâs business conference and I will stand in front of everyone giving a speech. The media will be there and so are the cityâs most important people and I have to look my best. âYou look amazing.â My friend Talia says holding my two-year-old son Sam looking at me through the mirror with a smile on her face.
These two are my life, Talia has been my friend since college and was with me when I was pregnant with Sam. She was also there when his father left us and she helped me raise Sam. She has been like a sister to me all these years and without her; I donât know what my life would have been like or what it would be like if she were to ever leave. I have no family and I am a single mother. But with Talia on my side, I donât feel alone anymore; I feel like I have a family, in I found a sister.
âThanks, Talia, I have to look my best today, not only as a guest speaker but also as a businesswoman and who knows. I might just get an investor to expand my business.â She smiles at me. âWell, I hope an investor is not all that you get tonight, we traveled far for you to just get an investor.â She winks at me, I know what she means, since Jason left me, I have dated no one, I focused on my business and raising Sam.
I look at my wristwatch and it reads 20h00. Itâs time to leave, âMy people, I will see you when I come back, Sam be good for aunty Talia, okay? And I expect you to watch me on tv and tell me all about it when I come back.â I kiss Sam on the forehead and hug Talia. âYou know I will, be good and kick ass.â I laughed as I exit our hotel room, I took the elevator down to the lobby and out the door.
When I get outside my limo is already waiting and the driver has the door opened for me. âMiss Black, you look gorgeous as usual.â This middle-aged man has been driving me to business conferences for two years now and each time he would say these exact words. He is more like a brother of a sort. âThank you, Steve.â He gives me a small smile before closing the door then jogging to the driverâs seat.
Soon the car merges into traffic, and I look out the window. The night is beautiful and the streets are still busy with people going about their business. Itâs hard to sleep when you have to hustle and I understand just how these people feel. I was like this once when I was starting my business, there was no time to sleep, I had to make it work and provide a better future for my son than the one I had.
The car comes to a stop at the venue and it's buzzing with media. I see a few faces I know talking to the media and taking pictures for the next dayâs paper. Prominent business women looking dashing in their evening gowns holding their partner's arm as they posed for pictures. Well, I have no partner and it wonât be the first time I appear in these events alone, and am okay with that. A man will just be a distraction and I canât afford that. Not now when my business is doing so well. I need to focus.
My turn comes, and Steve opens the door for me. As soon as I step out flashing lights blind me for a moment before my eyes adjust and I offer my practiced smile walking on the red carpet. âMiss Black, you look gorgeous tonight, who dressed you?â asked one reporter. âMiss Black, we heard you will give a speech tonight, can you tell me how you feel about that?â another asks, âMiss Black, there is a rumor that you are secretly seeing someone, are the rumors true?â always the same questions all the time.
Canât a woman just be single and not harassed about it? âNo comment.â That is all I say before posing for a few pictures then walked into the venue. I sighed as I walked in feeling like it was going to be a long night, I take a glass of champagne from a passing server and walked around looking for my table. I found it right on the second row to the front and I took a seat. I know that I have to mingle but right now I just need some alcohol in my system and this campaign will give me the courage I need to get through this night.
I spend a few minutes enjoying my drink and looking around. The place is decorated beautifully. âMiss Black, good evening.â Lord Jesus! Canât a lady just enjoy her drink without being bothered? I wear my practiced smile before turning to the gentleman that just greeted me. âGood evening MrâŠ?â I raised an eyebrow, and he gives me a cheeky smile. âWilliams, Nathan Williams.â He gives me his hand for a handshake and I took it. âA pleasure to meet you, Mr. Williams.â He smiles and I just want him to go away. But it would be rude to ask him to.
âCan I sit with you for a moment?â I point to the chair and he sits. âI have heard a lot about you Miss Black, a businesswoman who started her business from the ground up, I must say, I am impressed.â I took a sip of my champagne. âThank you, Mr. Williams, am sorry but I donât know who you are.â He smiles widely and I just want to disappear. âWell Miss Black, you are looking at the heir of Williams Enterprises, we specialize in oil and you might know my older brother Cole, the CEO of the company.â I know his brother but I donât know him and how can he be the heir when his older brother is the one running the business?
Before I could say anything, people start taking their seats as the event is about to start, the gentleman, Nathan, stood up and fixed his suit jacket then smiles at me. âWe will talk again Miss Black.â He bows a little before leave and I sighed relieved that he is gone. People fill the table and the master of ceremonies start the program. The first speaker takes the mic and makes his speech then the next.
My turn comes, and I am called to the stage. I greet everyone and start my speech but I canât help but feel like I am being watched. Strange I know because at this moment there are a lot of eyes on me but this feels different. I get distracted for a moment scanning the room for whoever is looking at me and then I see him. Third row, middle table, he is looking at me intensely and I canât help the shiver that runs down my spine when our eyes lock.
I hold eye contact for a few seconds before going back to finishing my speech then stepped down. I canât help but find him with my eyes when I descent the stage and I find him already looking at me. I break eye contact and walked to my table taking a seat. âThat was a brilliant speech Miss Black and congratulations on your business.â A lady next to me says. âThank you.â I turned my head again looking for those icy blue eyes that I can still feel on me and indeed. They will be looking straight at me making me feel strange, not in a bad way but in a way that I havenât felt in a long time. Who is that man?
âThat is Mr. Liam Brown, president of Brown Logistics and his company is the one that sponsors most of the businesswomen you see here today.â The lady next to me tells me, she must have seen me looking at him. âOh, I know his company but I donât know him and I have never seen him in these events before,â I tell her then look back at Mr. Brown but this time he was talking to the gentleman next to him.
âThat is because his projects coordinator is the one that always attends, Miss Lisa Anderson.â I know Lisa, we have met three times before and she is the one who asked me to be the guest speaker here today. I was wondering where she is. âI didnât know he was Lisaâs boss; I know her and she is the reason I am here today. Excuse me, I need a ladyâs room.â I stood up and head to the ladies.
I get in and look at myself in the mirror. âGet a grip Mia, you donât need a man, he will only be a distraction in your life and you need to focus.â I give myself a pep talk before walking back out closing my bag as I walk, I bump into someone and I stumbled back before a pair of hands hold me and steady me. âAm sorry, I wasnât looking where I was going,â I said fixing my back and dress. âItâs quite alright Miss Black.â My mouth went dry upon hearing the voice, it makes me want to look up and I did.
There they were, the icy blue eyes looking at me. âMr. Brown.â My voice comes out as a whisper and I wanted to kick myself. What was that pep talk for if I am going to act this way in his presence? âThat is me, Miss Black, are you alright?â I swallow saliva to wet my mouth as it feels awfully dry right now. âYes, I am. Have a good evening Mr. Brown.â I go around him and went back to my table without looking back. My palms are sweating and my heart is beating fast.
There is only one thing on my mind now. âGet away from him, he will ruin things and he is a distraction.â I take a glass of champagne and drank it in one go. âAre you okay Miss Black?â asks the lady when I take another glass. âYes, I am alright.â I down my second glass then sighed and look in the direction of the ladies. There he stood, looking at me making my heart boom in my chest as if it was going to jump out.
I need to stay away from this man or everything I have worked hard for will go down the drain because I can already feel that he will consume me if I get involved with him and I am not ready for that.
Two days had passed, and Lindy has travelled to four places in these two days, leaving bodied wherever she went. Drake was, of course, impressed by her competence and efficiency. Now she was in Rome, she flew straight there after her last mission. Drake sent her the details about her family, and she was currently on her way to meet them. She didnât have to hide from anyone here. She was in a foreign country and the odds of her being discovered were not that high. They were all in a restaurant having lunch when she walked in.The kids were all grown, and she couldnât help but stand there and admire them. âExcuse me mam, how may I help you?â asked the hostess. âOh, sorry am with them.â She said, pointing at Liamâs table. The hostess smiled and said, âYou have a beautiful family, mam.â Lindy nodded and walked forward. Andy was the first to see her, and the smile on his face turned into a frown. Lindyâs heart sank when she saw than and her smile disappeared.âWhatâs wrong Andy?â asked Lia
They went to the lounge and sat on the couches together. Sitting close to each other. âTell me, where have you been hiding?â lindy smiled shyly. âAt the office, I enjoy being alone and working on what needs to be done. I am an introvert, you see, and things like these are not my scene.â She man smiled at her.He has been looking for a woman like this for a while, one that works and would challenge him intellectually. Not just spending his money, but one who knows how to make it as well. The type of woman that would look like a homeless person at home but crush you in the boardroom then looks like a model at events like these. That was his ideal wife, and this woman was ticking all his boxes.âI must say, a woman like you would make a good wife.â That hit a spot-on Lindy. She was a good wife, and where did that leave her? Here with him now, about to kill him to save herself. Men were not to be trusted. Not unless you work with them.âI hope I get to experience being a wife in my lifeti
Lindy took the parcel and hailed a taxi to the hotel that was booked for her. She was paranoid after getting the parcel and kept looking around to see if she was not followed. Even when she was in the taxi, she kept looking out the window and would hold her breath each time there was a car behind them and wonder if it was following them. The taxi finally came to a stop at the hotel, and she hurried inside. After doing all the paperwork she went up to her room. There was a dress on the bed and an invitation card to some fundraiser. There was another note. âHe likes women, especially sophisticated ones. Have your hair in an updo style and play your part well.â That was the message on the card and Lindy could not help but think this was a trap to finally get her killed. At the same time, she wanted to go back so she can get a status report on her children. It has been six months of not knowing and it was killing her. She desperately wanted to know what was going on in the outside world
That day Lindy buried the body of that man after making sure there was no one else there. She buried him behind the cabin as the body was too heavy for her to carry further.Since that day, more men would appear and attack her. One and sometimes two a week would come. They would come on any random day and now she had to train and be ready for when they come. She now wore their clothes, especially the warm jackets and their boots. She got better at hunting and would now use animal skin for blankets. She was getting much better at fighting as well. Now she struggled a little with killing the men that she didnât know where they came from, but what she knew was that they wanted her dead and she didnât know why.To survive, she made sure that she will train and get better. She swore she will continue to fight for survival until she found a way out of that place. But that had been a mission since there seems to be no way out. She was gone all over the forest but couldnât find anything that
Lindy was taken that night by Drakeâs men, of course she fought with everything she got but in the end she was not match for the well trained assassins Drake sent. They drugged her and left with her.The next time when she woke up she was in a cabin in the middle of nowhere. The place was cold because it snowed all the time there. She was freezing cold and there was no one in sight. She got up and looked around and only thing she could see was that there is snow all over the place and it looked like it was surrounded by the forest. She made fire to keep warm but promised to leave the place as soon as she could. But soon realized that she had no clothes or food in the cabin. She needed to hunt to eat and gather firewood to make a fire and keep warm. She only had the thin clothes she wore the day they took her.Because she wanted to survive, the first week she kept herself warm by making fire and sleeping by the fire. Ate the three tins of beef stew when she was hugry but soon ran out o
âDad why donât you date again, mom was arrested for years and now she is a fugitive of the law and aunt Mia is dead. Why donât you date someone else, I promise all of us will be fine with it.â Caroline asked her father as they sat on the table having dinner.âShe is right dad, you raised us well, and you have been everything we can ever ask for in a parent and itâs time for you to be happy again.â Andy added. âAs long as you are happy am sure all of us will be happy too.â Andy continued.âI hear what you all are saying but I could never date again.â Their father told them and they looked at each other before Caroline asked again. âWhy?â Liam sighed. âBecause your mother and Mia were the only women for me.â He said then took a sip of his wine.âBut you can find someone else dad who will be just as good as them and there are a lot of good single women out there who would love to date you.â Liam shook his head.âNo other woman will ever be good enough for me. None of them will ever be Mi
