For him, that's a massive sacrifice, and it shows how much she means to him without being sappy. Her 'happy birthday' scene wrecks me every time. It's so clumsy and weird, just like them, but it's the most heartfelt thing either of them could possibly manage.

The thing about Denji and Power's relationship I found most interesting isn't that they become 'friends' in a typical sense. They start off as glorified roommates bound by circumstance—Denji just wants a normal life and Power is a cat-person who mainly sees him as a source of blood and someone to clean up her messes. Their interactions are so transactional and petty at the beginning. Power would absolutely sell him out for a pack of gum, and he knows it.

But somewhere in the middle of all the chaos and the Public Safety mission structure, this weird, grimy codependency forms. It's built less on trust and more on shared, bizarre trauma and a mutual lack of social graces. And he helps her, not out of any deep affection initially, but maybe because he recognizes that kind of desperate, simple want. From there, the shift is subtle. It's in Power begrudgingly acknowledging he's her 'first friend,' and later, the way she tries to give him a 'normal' life with that awful, beautiful birthday cake. Their friendship is jagged and uncomfortable and never really sweet, but it becomes incredibly real. It's the most authentic bond in Denji's life for a while.

Honestly, I think people over-romanticize their bond a little. They're not soulmates or a perfect found family. It's messier than that. Power is selfish to her core, and Denji is emotionally stunted. Their final scenes together are brutal because the friendship feels earned through all the pettiness and blood, not despite it. It's not a clean evolution—it's two broken people accidentally gluing their pieces together in a way that sort of works, for a while.
