What Choices Trigger Tales Of.Arise Romance Events?

A gentle note to really get into the 'Tales of Arise' vibe: pay attention to who you choose to talk to and how you act towards them in conversations, that’s basically how most of the romance scenes are wired out in the game. In my slower playthroughs, I found there were three kinds of triggers for the tender little beats of affection. The first were the affectionate/protective dialog options when the character is in a vulnerable state. The second were the completion of the personal story episodes for each character (those are their side quests and focus on one character at a time). And the third were having them in your active party for the major plot scenes. Many of the romantic scenes depend on the character actually witnessing the scene in order for it to play out.

There is a sort of timing to some of the romance scenes too. Sometimes the opportunity for them to come up is before a certain cutscene or after a character's personal story has been completed. It's a good idea to save before conversations and act consistently towards the character (bring them with you frequently, choose dialogue that uplifts them rather than shuts them down), and the scenes of affection will then come up more frequently. It's not a dating-sim type of system, more of a series of small gestures of care. Support a character, complete their personal story early, and chances are you'll get to see some warm scenes between them and you.

My steps for a romance focused run of 'Tales of Arise' would be 1st to map out all of the available personal quests of the characters you want to try to romance and complete them as soon as possible. Then for the various instances of dialogue throughout the game I choose the most emotionally open, protective, teasing etc. answers as opposed to indifferent etc. I make a list of the steps as follows: (1) complete the character(s) desired’s personal episode, (2) make sure they are in the party for story relevant sections, (3) choose relationship favorable dialogue, (4) go back to camp and recheck for any scenes that may have occurred while you were away (such as in the interim between missions at rest).

To make it easier for myself to remember everything, I created a checklist. Complete the character’s personal episode, make sure they’re in the party for the right story scenes, pick warm/protective/teasing options for dialogue, go back to scenes in camp or when resting to continue a story. I make sure to complete mid-game choices as some triggers only appear after you hit a certain story flag. I’ve also found that reloading an earlier save instead of continuing on through the game is better, since a lot of the romantic storylines are based off of the player making single-choice decisions along the way. When the corresponding cutscenes do trigger, they end up feeling so much better because you can tell you earned it.

While there are many ways to miss soft moments in 'Tales of Arise', most of them are actually locked within the conversational choices given to the player in scenes throughout the game. These all tend to revolve around choosing the most personal, flirty, or protective lines towards the character the player likes.

Doing their character episodes and keeping them in your party for big story moments is really all that it takes to experience the “soft” moments of the game. As long as your favored character is in your party for story moments, the game will correctly check for relationship triggers with them. Saving before long cutscenes and camp chats is also a good idea, as you can reload and choose an alternate scene if you so desire. It’s not that hard to do, and it’s fun to go back around and do your characters episodes to experience the moments with them that you haven’t gotten yet.

These little conversation branches can be 'triggers' for the romance scenes. The Kind, Flirty, or Protective types can all be unlocked by saying the relevant thing to them in conversation. Completing their 'personal story' sidequest is also required, and then making sure they're by your side for the relevant scenes in the story. I learned this the hard way, when in a single playthrough I kept a character benched and wondered why a sweet scene or two weren't in the game for them.

This leaves very little to actual choice in one playthrough of the game. Make gentle, flirty or protective dialogue choices, complete characters’ side content and make sure to stand next to them during set story scenes. All in all the romantic scenes feel very earned because of this approach.
