What Is The Chronological Land Of Stories Book Order Including Spin Offs
As a longtime fan revisiting the entire Land of Stories series, I'd love a proper reading timeline that integrates all the main books with the spinoffs like A Tale of Magic.
Librarian here. We always catalog and recommend the series in publication order. It's the standard for a reason—it preserves narrative integrity and reader engagement. The jump from middle-grade portal fantasy to a more YA-oriented prequel series is also a natural progression for readers who are growing up with the books. A child who starts at 8 or 9 with 'The Wishing Spell' will be ready for the more complex themes of 'A Tale of Magic' by the time they finish the sixth book. It's a beautifully paced reading journey that mirrors growing up.

The sheer creativity in 'Beyond the Kingdoms' and 'An Author's Odyssey,' where the twins travel into literary worlds, is why I love this series. It's a celebration of stories themselves. That meta-quality makes the later pivot to a prequel about the system behind the stories so clever. The order shows a progression: first, you see the wonder of the stories, then you see the machinery that makes them work. If you read the prequels first, you see the machinery first, which is less magical for a newcomer.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the graphic novel yet! It's a full adaptation of the first book. So for a mixed-media experience, you could start with the graphic novel of 'The Wishing Spell,' then switch to the novels for 'The Enchantress Returns' onward. It's a fantastic gateway, especially for reluctant readers or those who love visual storytelling. It still counts as starting at the true beginning.

The spin-offs are successful because they're not just rehashes. 'A Tale of Magic' builds a whole new system of magic (the fairy tribunal, the rights of magical creatures) that you only see as an established institution in the main series. It makes the world feel lived-in and real. You understand the politics behind the portals and the laws. That depth is a gift to the reader who completes the whole journey, not a prerequisite.

Book two of the Dragon Rider series.
After the sudden attack on the compound and the betrayal of my dearest friend, we are forced into hiding as King Toban's army sweeps through the land. Aurora is missing and the new Dragon Riders are being taken hostage by Toban, and with the book gone, I'm left in its place. Secrets are being exposed and families torn apart, and as the Kingdom falls around us alliances must be made with those who once defied us.
The war I wished that would never happen has started. I must choose to save those around me, or myself.
Book 3
I need to save Aurora. But with the Red Moon staying, those without power are now in danger. With Toban holding Aurora captive and the land of Athena being taken over by Anna's Rogues, I learn that this isn't my only worry.
Markus is back and stronger than before, and with his new strength, the life of my friends comes into jeopardy. I must choose to save my Dragon, or the ones that have become my family... Or suffer from the Red Moon's curse, Death.
Thinking about narrative payoff: The main series ends with 'Worlds Collide', which has a huge, universe-spanning climax. Following that with the smaller-scale, personal story of 'Queen of Hearts' can feel anticlimactic. That's why I'd insert the Queen's story before the finale. Maybe after Book 5, 'An Author's Odyssey'. Her motivations are relevant in Book 6, and having her backstory fresh adds weight.
It's a minor tweak, but it stitches the spin-off more tightly into the main fabric. Just a thought for those wanting a fully integrated experience.
Why overcomplicate it? The books are numbered on the spines for a reason. Look at the little roman numeral or number near the title on the cover. Volume I, Volume II, etc. That's your foolproof guide. Some editions even have a series list right on the first few pages. Trust the physical (or digital) book's own labeling over any fan-made list that might accidentally include spin-offs.
The boxed sets they sell always contain the main six in order. That's the publisher telling you, "This is the story." If you buy a boxed set, you're golden. The companion books are never included in those sets, which tells you everything about their necessity to the core narrative.
Buy the set, read left to right. Done.
The series has a dedicated subreddit. The FAQ there lists the order. It's the same as here: the six main books. The community is pretty unanimous about it. They also have threads discussing whether to read the prequels first or after—the consensus is strongly 'after'.
Some series have prequels or interquels that complicate reading order, but 'The Land of Stories' is blessedly simple. It's a straight shot from Book 1 to Book 6. No alternate timelines, no spin-offs required for the main plot. Enjoy the simplicity while it lasts!
Honestly, the later books kinda lost me. I loved the simple fairy tale mashup of the first two. When it became about recruiting characters from 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Sherlock Holmes', it felt like a different series. Chronologically, it's connected, but the vibe shifted. So the connection is there in plot, but the tone and scope change so much it almost feels like a sequel series starring the same twins.
