It's like comparing a favorite restaurant's signature dish to their seasonal specials. The signature (series) is why you're a regular, and you rank its consistent perfection. The seasonal (standalone) is why you check the menu, and you rank its novelty and execution. Both lists help you navigate the menu, but you don't expect the seasonal to replace the signature on the permanent menu.
The standalones that rank highest often share a trait: a terrifyingly plausible 'what if' scenario. Series rankings care less about plausibility and more about the villain's personal connection to the hero. So the fears being tapped are different—societal anxiety versus personal vendetta. Fan rankings reveal whether a reader is more scared by a global catastrophe or by a stalker knowing the hero's home address.
I wonder if the average rating on retail sites is even a fair metric. Series books get ratings from completionists who might be burnt out, lowering scores. Standalones are more often picked by intrigued readers, potentially skewing scores higher for mid-tier entries. Direct comparison using aggregate numbers is inherently flawed. You'd need a deep dive into review text sentiment, not just stars.
I don't put much stock in aggregated rankings. The fun is in the disagreement. You'll find someone swearing a forgotten standalone is a masterpiece and that the flagship series is overrated. That passionate niche defense is more telling than any consensus list. Comparing the two bodies of work is ultimately about whether you value the comfort of a returning hero or the thrill of a new nightmare each time.
The comparison highlights Patterson's range, or lack thereof, depending on your view. If the standalone rankings are similar in tone and structure to the series rankings, it shows a strong brand identity. If they're wildly different, it shows versatility. From what I've seen, the rankings suggest his core thriller mechanics are consistent, but the standalones allow for slightly weirder set-dressing.

Jack Saunders wanted one last hurrah before taking the mantle of DS Oil & Gas, the billion-dollar company that his father founded. His friend, Owen, let him borrow his mansion on a tropical island so that he could throw a final party before “marrying” the business that would dominate the rest of his life. He brought his secretary, Brandy, hoping that he could kindle a relationship that would last through the long days and nights of running a company. However, while the party was great, the gold digging woman he brought was not, and Jack resigned himself to a lifetime of loneliness.
That was until he took a walk down the beach and met her. A woman who didn’t recognize him from the tabloids and only saw him, the man behind the money. Of all the women Jack had ever met, there was nobody like Emma LaRue. With one pretend marriage ceremony, she would change his life forever, and become the only one he ever wanted to give his saltwater kisses to.
This novella is the first half of Saltwater Kisses written from Jack’s point-of-view, with a few bonus scenes thrown in as well.
My dad only reads Patterson standalones. He says he doesn't want homework; he wants a story that starts and finishes. He doesn't care about remembering a character's history from three books ago. That's a perfect summary of the appeal.
I'm just here for the drama. Every Patterson thread eventually has someone ranting about his writing process and co-authors, and others defending the sheer entertainment value. It's pop-literary popcorn.
This might be a hot take, but the later Alex Cross novels don't rank as high for me as the originals. The early books had a grittier, more visceral feel, almost like horror-thrillers. The newer ones, while still page-turners, can feel a bit more procedural and reliant on the established formula. For my personal top-tier Patterson thrillers, I'm looking at 'Kiss the Girls', 'Pop Goes the Weasel', and 'Roses Are Red'. They captured Cross at his most driven and the villains at their most chilling. That era is the peak of Patterson's crime writing for my money.
