I've noticed a trend in newer 'hard' SF to incorporate climate change and ecological collapse as a driver for space colonization. The realism isn't just in the rockets, but in the bleak economic and environmental pressures that would force us off-world. It adds a layer of urgent, grim plausibility to the whole endeavor.
James S.A. Corey's 'The Expanse' series starts with very realistic physics in our own solar system—the Epstein drive is the one big piece of 'magic', but everything else follows: thrust gravity, orbital mechanics, communication delays, and the physiological differences between Earthers, Martians, and Belters. The political tensions are directly born from the realities of distance and resource scarcity. It's probably the most accessible gateway into realistic space storytelling for a lot of people.
Ben Bova's Grand Tour series is a whole collection of novels set in a near-future, realistic solar system. Books like 'Mars', 'Venus', and 'Jupiter' focus on the political and corporate dramas of colonizing and exploiting each planet or moon. The space travel involves realistic orbital transfers, radiation hazards, and life-support challenges. It's like a geopolitical thriller, but set entirely within the confines of plausible 21st-century space technology.
C.J. Cherryh's 'Downbelow Station' and the wider Alliance-Union universe feature realistic space travel with sub-light speeds and the resulting time gaps causing political and personal chaos. The merchanters live their entire lives on ships, dealing with trade routes, supply issues, and the claustrophobia of long voyages. The 'realism' is deeply social and economic, showing how human society would fracture and evolve when separated by years of travel time.
A recent one that impressed me was 'Project Hail Mary', also by Andy Weir. It has a similar problem-solving DNA to 'The Martian' but on an interstellar scale. The protagonist wakes up with amnesia on a desperate mission to save humanity, and the process of figuring out the ship's systems, the alien biology, and the astrophysical problem they face is a puzzle box of applied science. The relationship he builds with the alien entity is heartwarming and stems from a shared language of mathematics and physics.

A recent thing that stood out to me, actually, was Kim Stanley Robinson's 'Aurora'. That's probably my benchmark for realism right now. It follows a generation ship mission to Tau Ceti, and what I found so different was its total commitment to showing how complicated a closed ecosystem really is, right down to the waste recycling and genetic bottlenecks. The physics and biology felt solid, but the real gut-punch was the psychology—how a society that's been on a ship for generations might not even want the mission anymore.
It's not a heroic adventure; it feels more like a meticulously argued cautionary tale about the sheer scale of the cosmos. Andy Weir's 'The Martian' and 'Project Hail Mary' are obviously great for near-term, problem-solving realism, but 'Aurora' made me sit back and just think about the implications for days. The tech is plausible, but it's never the point; it's just the brutal stage the human drama plays out on.
