I bought the first volume after many fans rave about it, and the worldbuilding is so amazing that I can’t get enough of it. The story of a woman who wants to go back to her glorious days while trying to move on to her life is amazing. Free novels may exist on the internet, but most of them are illegal and of very poor quality, much like dollar-store sushi. I think it's pretty clear that TaleWorlds did not design Bannerlord with console play in mind. As a PC game from a certain era, everything about Bannerlord – from its deep menus to its conversations displayed in a radial choice list – is just plain better with a mouse and keyboard. Even though I really love this game, I wouldn’t recommend it to a controller-only player. It’s a lot of fighting against the interface to try to defeat Vaegirs. Play Bannerlord the way it was meant to be played: clear some space on that desktop of yours, grab a mouse and get to it!

The team that Robert Ironside leads is iconic. Ironside is the brains, Mark Sanger is the brawn, Eve Whitfield is the heart, and Ed Brown is the new kid. Mark Sanger, Eve Whitfield and Ed Brown are in the process of redemption, stability and growth respectively and this makes for some great TV. The characters are all very real with all their flaws and that is what makes the show so enduring.

Kishikawa is the best of the bunch, a sophisticated, cultured and multilingual killer who treats his murders with the same love and care that he would bring to any other art form. His companions, Hana and Diamond, are equally well-realized - Hana’s background is horrific but she is not a victim; she is strong and silent. Diamond is a foul-mouthed, lacking-in-class villain, and thus a wonderful foil to the urbane killer. Even the least of the minor characters (like the friend of Hel’s childhood that he has to kill) is introduced with a sense of tension. But it is the relationships between Kishikawa and his two murderesses that are really the interest of this novel: his paternal love for Hel, Hana’s devotion to him, and the begrudging respect that he gets from his enemies. The novel is a character-driven thriller that explores as much philosophy as action.

It’s Murphy Shepherd time! So, Murphy is the heart and soul of The Water Keeper, the main character that you’ll fall deeply in love with. I call him a paradox because he is a priest turned warrior and a mourner turned savior. This man exists to rescue trafficking victims but he also harbors the deepest pain in not being able to save his own family. His relationship with his dog, Gunner, speaks more to his development than an entire page of backstory ever could. He can be hard for others to read but Gunner knows him inside and out. If Gunner growls then you know Murphy has just done something that you would not care for. But if Gunner gently nuzzles his hand then you get a glimpse of the kinder, softer Murphy. His interaction with secondary characters like Bones (so clever) and Summer (a young girl who has been through hell) gives you a glimpse into the various personalities Murphy is made up of. One minute he is quoting scripture and the next he has snapped the wrist of a trafficker and moved on. And then there is the setting. The novel is set in Florida and Charles Martin vividly describes the various waterways the protagonist uses to conduct his business as well as travel from place to place. These waterways are not just passageways for the man, they also serve as a battleground for the many missions he undertakes. In addition to the bad guys that he battles, he also must contend with the many dangers of nature, including ferocious storms, predatory sharks and hidden coves that could doom him and his rescues.
