Don't overlook Project Gutenberg! They have a huge collection of public domain literature, and many of those titles come with audiobook versions narrated by volunteers. It's all free and legal, no sign-up needed. The quality can be a bit hit-or-miss since it's volunteer-run, but you can't argue with the price. I found some real gems there, especially for older novels.
The social aspect of Libby is underrated. You can see what your friends are reading (if you connect) and get recommendations. It feels less isolating than just consuming media alone. Seeing that three people you know listened to the same history book might prompt you to give it a try. Turns a utilitarian app into a bit of a community.
Can we talk about the ethical side for a sec? Using these free, legal platforms supports libraries and public domain projects. Piracy sites might seem easier, but they directly hurt authors and narrators, especially the indie ones. Keeping the ecosystem healthy means we keep getting great content. The library apps are so good now that there's really no excuse.
Sometimes the best things aren't branded as 'audiobooks.' Documentaries on the BBC Sounds app or lectures from universities on iTunes U provide the same educational depth in an audio format. I've learned more about medieval history from a Yale Open Course lecture series than from many popular history audiobooks. Expand your definition of 'educational audio.'
What's everyone's experience with wait times for popular books on Libby/Hoopla? I find Hoopla's 'no wait' model for their included titles to be a lifesaver, even if the overall selection is smaller. Libby has the newer stuff, but I've been on hold for 'Atomic Habits' for like 8 weeks. It's a good lesson in planning your reading list ahead of time!

Adrian Vale is a 24-year-old young and strikingly charismatic English professor at Blackwood College. Despite his strict reputation in the classroom and his sharp intolerance for laziness, he remains one of the most admired lecturers on campus, with almost every female student secretly crushing on him. Yet behind his calm authority and flawless image, Adrian is fiercely private and completely uninterested in relationships.
Ryder, 21, is a third-year student at the same college and a rising hockey player known for his talent, arrogance, and troublemaking streak. He’s not a freshman anymore, and his confidence has only grown with time—along with his reputation for challenging authority whenever it suits him. To most people, Ryder is just another cocky athlete with too much freedom and not enough discipline.
Everything changes when Ryder and his friend make a reckless bet—one that challenges Ryder to break Professor Vale’s unshakable control, push him past his limits, and get under his skin in ways no student has ever managed before. Ryder and Professor Vale cross paths in a way neither of them can ignore. What begins as irritation, defiance, and constant clashes in and out of the classroom slowly turns into something far more dangerous. The tension between them is undeniable, blurring the line between hatred and desire.
But at Blackwood College, relationships between students and lecturers are strictly forbidden. One wrong move could destroy Adrian’s career and end Ryder’s future in hockey. Still, neither of them seems willing—or able—to walk away.
Everyone in class can hear my thoughts, but there's a catch—the "thoughts" they hear have been deliberately altered.
During the exam, while I swiftly fill out the answer sheet, the rest of the class stays put. They eagerly wait to hear the answers in my head.
[The answer for this is C, of course. These questions are exactly the same as the ones Ms. Clarke revealed to me. I'm going to be the top student again without even breaking a sweat!]
Everyone else immediately copy my answers. Ultimately, apart from me, they all end up failing the exam.
During our swimming class, my leg cramps, and I start sinking underwater. I try to scream for help, but my classmates hear something entirely different in my head.
[I'm going to act like I'm drowning and see who's the idiot who jumps in to save me. Hahaha!]
In the end, they all watch indifferently as I drown.
My eyes open again. I've gone back in time to the day of the exam.
This time, I can also hear these "thoughts" of mine that have been altered.

Don't sleep on podcast apps like Apple Podcasts or Google Podcasts. Search for the book title. Lots of classic works are serialized as podcasts by dedicated narrators. 'The History of Rome' podcast is basically an audiobook, for instance. For studying, this can be great because episodes align with chapters, making it easy to pause and resume. The audio quality is usually high, as podcasters invest in good mics.
Chirp is worth a look for the price-conscious. It's not a library or subscription; it's a deals site. They offer deeply discounted audiobooks daily, and they have a section of permanently free titles. You buy them and they're yours forever, delivered via the Chirp app. The free selection isn't huge, but it rotates.
I've picked up several freebies that were genuinely great. It's more of a 'build a cheap personal library' tactic than unlimited borrowing. But if you want to own a few without paying Audible prices, and don't mind browsing for deals, it's a solid supplementary source. I check their free page every few weeks.
