I stumbled upon 'The Demon Leader’s Lover' a while back when I was deep into web novel rabbit holes, and it quickly became one of my guilty pleasures. The story’s mix of dark fantasy and romance hooked me, especially how the protagonist balances vulnerability with backbone. You can find it on platforms like Webnovel or NovelUpdates, which usually have the latest chapters and fan translations if it’s not officially licensed. I’d also recommend checking out the novel’s original publisher’s site if it’s a Korean or Chinese work—sometimes they offer free early chapters to lure readers in.
Fair warning, though: the translation quality can vary wildly depending on the platform. I remember one site had such awkward phrasing that the demon lord sounded like a grumpy accountant instead of a terrifying warlord. If you’re picky about prose, it might be worth waiting for official releases or sticking to top-rated fan translations. The community forums on NovelUpdates usually discuss which versions are best, so that’s a goldmine for quality control.

The audiobook of ‘The Flower of Happiness’ is read by Brina Palencia, who also voices Zenitsu in the English dub of the anime. That means if you’re an English dub fan, there’s a lot more to love about the audio version of ‘The Flower of Happiness’ than there is about the free e-book version. (Of course, the free e-book is ‘free’, but if you do decide to spend money on a version, this is something to consider.) Often the presentation of a work can add so much value to it that buying it is worth it in itself. I listened to ‘The Flower of Happiness’ on Audible and it felt like an extended version of the quietest, slice-of-life-est parts of the book, read by a very gifted narrator.

I recommend you checking out Moon+ Reader (a really cool app to read books/ebooks/poetry). It’s not a source of books/ebooks, but I found it to be one of the best readers around. If you can download an ebook (in EPUB format) from any website then Moon+ Reader is definitely the way to go to customize your reading experience to the fullest extent (fonts, margins, backgrounds, scrolling modes and many more options).
My approach to reading webnovels is to download them as text files. Then I use Calibre to convert them to EPUB which I can then read using Moon+ Reader. I do have to find a stable source of the text for the novel first but after that it is all sweet reading. I have a perfect library of novels that I can read to my hearts content without any ads, waiting for pages to load, or any other restrictions that the app may place upon me. I own the files.
All of these methods require finding a stable source for the raw text first. If you’re serious about binge reading, creating your own digital library of goodness is worth the effort.

The sheer volume of redirects and pop-up ads on some of these ‘free’ sites can be exhausting, leading to fake download buttons, Virus Alerts and pages shaking about with the arrival of further ads. Why put up with this kind of adversarial reading experience when you can access a smooth, free and legal reading experience instead? You don’t have to spend a penny to enjoy reading manga and your time and peace of mind are worth so much more than that. MANGA Plus and Shonen Jump Apps have been designed to provide a smooth and immersive reading experience of manga, whilst ensuring that you are not subjected to any ads or potential security threats. In 2024, there is simply no excuse for accessing low-quality sites such as these.

A great book for the fantasy enthusiast on a tight budget is The Spiderwick Chronicles. BookBub (a service that emails out daily deals for Kindle books) occasionally makes these available for free. And, occasionally, some of the blogs that post about free e-books will list temporarily free ebooks, too. Just make sure you get the ebook from a reputable provider to avoid getting taken for a ride and having to download the ebook again.

I have checked a few of my normal haunts for this and it seems Yonder have it locked down tight. The best way to read this as a legal download would be to sign up for their in-app model and purchase a daily pass to read it. All other claims to download the full novel as a cheaper option are scams. The story is very hot right now, with two possessive twin anti-heroes, so I’d recommend signing up for the app for a bargainous binge read.

A note on the male leads: Callisto fans will likely pay for high-def versions of his scenes. Derrick sympathizers may not feel as motivated to spend on the story. (I’m pretty sure that’s a word that’s used.) Generally, how much one emotionally invests in a story will correlate to how much of a pain one is willing to put themselves through to read it. I only used really questionable sites to read Derrick when I wasn’t really interested in the story. But as soon as I was fully hooked, I was more than happy to shell out for a subscription to get the best way to read the story in the most hassle-free way possible.

One has to consider not just where one is going to read a story, but also in what order its chapters are to be read. The Translator’s Table of Contents (linked from Shinkai at the top of this page) lays out chapters of Flowers are Bait in prologue, main story, and bonus sections. That they were written to be read in that particular order is crucial to appreciating several layers of symbolism which grow gradually from the protagonist’s growing realization of the true nature of the flowers he’s been using to catch girls. Getting to understand that slowly is key to his growing up and, to readers, to their getting to appreciate the central metaphor of the story. An aggregator might not care to recreate the structure for such work, though.

Royal Road is your primary source for this story. The entire thing is posted there chapter by chapter, sometimes ahead of Scribble Hub where I also post (it’s one of the largest web fiction hubs out there). I don’t think Royal Road stories are available on platforms like Amazon Kindle Unlimited yet, because they’re growing their audience first online. The formatting on Royal Road is typically clean and I have a follow button there to notify you when I post a new chapter. Be wary of random aggregator sites, because their chapter ordering can be all wrong and they’re overlaid with tons of nasty ads. The best way to read Royal Road stories is to go directly to the author’s Royal Road or Scribble Hub pages to get the latest, up-to-date version.

Of course, there’s a lot of fun in comparing book to show. But unlike the very faithful first season of television, there are large and soon increasing deviations from the original text as the season goes on. To do this sort of comparison, you’d really need to read the whole, unedited text – something that a free sample would not be able to give you past the introductory setup.
The free sample is like the pilot episode of a show. If you like the pilot, you can then subscribe to the channel to watch the rest of the episodes. There is no way to stream an entire TV show for free on its official network (unless you have a subscription). Bookstores work in much the same way as TV networks – the free sample is your free trial, and then you go to the library or buy the book as a subscriber.
