Reading translated works originally written in your native language can be a great bridge. You already know the story and characters, so you can focus entirely on how the English language captures the same ideas. You can compare sentence structures and word choices, which provides fascinating insights into how different languages express the same concepts.
Pay attention to dialogue tags and action beats. He 'scoffed' versus he 'said sarcastically.' She 'padded' across the floor versus she 'walked.' These small, specific verb choices are vocabulary goldmines for making your own writing or speaking more vivid and precise. They're the tools that professional writers use to show, not tell.
It builds cultural literacy alongside vocabulary. You learn what a 'pub' truly feels like in a British novel, or what 'tailgating' means in an American college story. You pick up on historical references, social norms, and humor. This cultural context makes the vocabulary meaningful. Knowing the word 'scone' is one thing; understanding its role in a cozy mystery set in an English village is another.
It's particularly good for learning 'bookish' vocabulary—the kind of words that appear more in writing than in casual speech. Words like 'however,' 'moreover,' 'consequently,' 'notwithstanding.' These are crucial for academic or formal writing, and seeing them used correctly in complex sentences trains you to use them yourself in essays or reports.
Audiobooks are a massively underrated tool here. Hearing the pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm of complex sentences teaches you how the language flows. You learn where the emphasis falls in a polysyllabic word, how clauses connect, and the musicality of prose. Pairing an audiobook with the physical text can be especially powerful—you see the word and hear it simultaneously, engaging two learning pathways at once.

Dropped Into a NSFW Novel and Immediately Became His Obsession

I woke up inside a novel, and not even as an important character.
I became a pretty background extra in a smut novel.
My brother, however, was the only normal person in the entire story.
His character setting was the one man the soft, delicate heroine could never win over.
He was the cold, unattainable Prince Charming she could never conquer.
When the heroine cried and confessed her love, he was studying.
When she offered him her whole heart and body, he was busy starting a company.
When she spiraled into scandals and nightlife, he was already a billionaire, calm and untouchable.
I thought he would live a quiet, ascetic life forever.
Until one night, I walked in on him at midnight…
holding a piece of clothing I recognized all too well, murmuring a name over and over, a name so familiar that my scalp tingled.

I'd actually recommend starting with well-written middle-grade or younger YA fiction. The 'Redwall' series by Brian Jacques has a feast-related vocabulary that's insane—scones, pasties, cordials, etc.—alongside great adventure words. The language is rich and descriptive but always in service of a clear, fast-paced story. It builds confidence with complex words in a welcoming context.
