1 Second After Novels & Stories

He said he had flagged it as potentially fabricated before I called. I said I would call him back. I sat at my desk for approximately ninety seconds. This was not a long time. But I had learned, over the past several months, that the ninety seconds between a stimulus and a response were the most important ninety seconds in any situation that mattered. I had spent years skipping those ninety seconds entirely, moving from information directly to action, from Serena's words directly to conclusions, from fear directly to control. The damage that had caused was documented extensively in Dr. Anand's notes and in Elena's memory and in the specific architecture of the year I had just lived through.

The man continued typing something on the screen, his fingers deftly working over the keyboard. After a few seconds, he lifted his head again. “It’s all yours, sir. The moment you feed in the password and your fingerprints; the system will unlock for 59 seconds. That’s all the time we have before it shuts down again.” Josh sighed, feeling anxious. Do you think it’s enough time?”

"I didn't see anyone that matches with me, but you, so, I will take that as a yes?" "No, I haven't said yes yet".She sighed. "Can I think about it?". "Um".He checks his wristwatch. "You have thirty seconds to think about it and your time starts now". "Huh? Thirty seconds?". "Mm-hmm, you have twenty seconds remaining".He said and Isadora groaned frustratedly. "And it's 10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...2...And 1, Time up!".

Late one night, as she sat watching surveillance footage of the villa, her screen glitched for exactly 3 seconds. Just long enough to display a single message. “ECHO PROTOCOL STAGE TWO: INITIATED.”

"Are we leaving now? Can we leave now? How long until we leave? Is it time? Is it almost time?" I check my phone. "Twenty-eight minutes." "That's SO LONG. That's like forever. That's like a hundred years. That's—" "It's twenty-eight minutes," Ethan says from the table, not looking up from his waffles. "That's exactly 1,680 seconds. Which is a long time in seconds but not a long time in minutes. It depends on how you measure it." "Well, it FEELS like forever," Alexander insists. "Feelings aren't the same as facts."

CADEN The primary signal came at nineteen minutes. He was already in motion before it finished. The secondary signal came four seconds later, and he recalibrated instantly. Complications. More people than planned. He adjusted the route in his head and texted Soren the secondary vehicle confirmation as he moved.

The air hung heavy for 10 whole seconds. "You... how come..." my sister, hiding behind my mother, asked. Her voice trembled as if she'd seen a ghost. "I'm still alive," I said. My father's expression changed, and he forced a smile. "I'm glad you're still alive. This is great..." He nudged my mother and said, "Go make breakfast!" My mother agreed in a daze. She walked to the door, then looked back at me, her expression so complicated I couldn't tell what she was thinking.

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND ONE The first notification appeared at 06:14. It remained visible for exactly seven seconds. Long enough to be noticed. Too brief to be explained. MEMORY PRIORITIZATION AUDIT COMPLETE. No one acknowledged it. Not immediately. The message disappeared. The tower continued functioning normally. Elevators moved. Reports updated. Executives crossed corridors. Morning routines resumed. Everything appeared unchanged. Yet something had shifted. The architecture felt quieter. Not calmer.

120 hours, that was all it would take. Kate looked up at the sky, 119:53:42 shone in the blue of the afternoon. The time was enchanted across the sky, a magic that had been lent from another kingdom. The alpha's first bite ceased to be effective in 119 hours, 53 minutes, and 27, 26, 25 seconds. Kate counted down, grateful for each second that passed in their favor.

No app. But the Clock on the home screen was moving backward. 9:01 AM... 9:00 AM... 8:59 AM... And then, a single line of text appeared at the very bottom of the screen, written in a font that Julian had never seen before. It wasn't Courier New. It wasn't Emerald. It was Handwritten. "JULIAN. CLARA. HOPE. THE SEVENTEEN SECONDS ARE UP. THE REALITY COMPLIANCE HAS BEEN OVERRIDDEN BY THE CO-AUTHOR. CHECK THE BASEMENT."
