Panic grips me now, sharp and raw. “It’s him…” I whisper, my voice trembling. My pulse spikes. I kept my face still and my hands flat on the desk. She told me about the gap year. Fifteen to seventeen, two years of her own life were simply absent from her memory. She remembered seventeen with a quality she described as compressed, like she had come back from somewhere and was relearning how to take up space. The years between were a clean removal.
