Everybody has gone, even the rest of the guards. A car horn startles me and I quicken my attempts at searching for where the bleach is kept. I walk into the kitchen and I look around frantically. I see a small door and I jog towards it and open it. Bingo! There are shelves of soap, disinfectants, other products, but most importantly, bleach! I grab the small gallon of bleach and I jog back out of the kitchen quickly. As I walk through the living room so I can go upstairs and prepare the syringe, I spot Robert talking to someone at the entrance of the house.

I took the bottle of bleach and poured it into the washing machine without a second thought. In the same way, I took the duvet and placed it with the white bedsheet, allowing it to rest for a few minutes. I filled another washing machine halfway with water and detergent, then added the second bedsheet. I observed it absorbing water, growing heavy in my hand. The tenth floor wasn’t as bright and well-furnished as the second floor. Bryan assumed maybe the rooms became more dark and gloomy as the numbers went up. I put the axe away and joined James where he’d already poured the bleach into the bucket. “Got two brushes.” I threw one to him and he dipped it into the bucket. I poured the bleach directly on the blood and started scrubbing as James shook his head and started from the other side. James and I scrubbed that area until there couldn’t possibly be any traces of blood left. When the smell of bleach overwhelmed us, I took the black bags to the Jeep and opened the boot. I placed three black bags on the floor of the boot and then loaded Mia inside. James locked the den’s door and got into the passenger seat.

Hunter returned, holding a plastic mixing bowl in one hand and an application brush in the other. Inside the bowl was a frothy blue mixture that reeked of chemicals strong enough to make my eyes water. I recoiled slightly, nose wrinkling as I waved a hand in front of my face. “What the hell is that?” I asked, eyeing the suspicious concoction like it might come alive and eat me. He smirked, setting the bowl down on the vanity in front of me. “Powdered bleach. Gotta lighten your hair first so the pink sticks better. Otherwise, you’ll just end up with a muddy mess.”

I agree with him, our packhouse, while small, is immaculate, yet the cleaning products' smell was subtle. We follow Walter towards the south of the building and through a set of double doors that reveal a long corridor with rooms down either side. A floor to ceiling window at the end of the corridor is bathing the area with sunlight. The smell of lemon bleach is even stronger here, with a subtle scent of drainage. Clearly, maintenance is needed, and the bleach is just covering the problem.

She closed her eyes, breathing steadily, relaxed. She was so thin. It hurt to see her like this. I was into bottle three when I could actually see streaks of her old color. Auri was patient, arms wrapped around her knees in the warm water as I scrubbed through the color in her hair.
