Her ears twitched, but she remained where she was. The kittens, however, were instantly lured away from their hiding spot. I imagined their mother was completely exasperated at their idiocy. One gray striped kitten, one black, and one gray and orange kitten tumbled from the bushes. They began to eat the fish with gusto. Although they were all so wobbly that more than one got more food on their faces and paws than in their mouths. “What fatties.” Niamh stroked the striped kitten, but it barely registered the touch.

I held his gaze. He smiled. It was unsettling and reminded me of that creepy Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. I never liked that book. It left me unsettled, but I’ve read it many times since it’s Delilah’s favorite. ‘He’s the Cheshire Wolf. The cat could disappear into the darkness and reappear at his leisure. Maybe that’s why he’s so stuck on calling us kitten.’ Emilia concluded. ‘Or he’s just a dick.’

“It’s… fragile.” Her eyes widened, and she carefully untied the bow, her fingers trembling with anticipation. When the ribbon fell away, she lifted the lid slowly, and the box moved. She yelped in surprise, pulling the lid off completely. Inside was a tiny, fluffy calico kitten, a patchwork of black, gray, orange, and white. Its wide blue eyes looked up at her, and it let out a pitiful little “Meeeeow!” “Oh! Ohhh!” Kathrine gasped, scooping the kitten into her arms. It clung to her bright green shirt with its tiny claws, mewling softly. “She’s so cute and tiny and…!”

Knowing my glare of ‘don’t you fucking dare’ which seems to cool his jets, and he switches to a charming smile instead to cover his misdemeanour. The miaow calls to me again and I’m so drawn I completely forget all else. I lean in to peer at the delicate little bundle of ginger stripes and fluffy white tummy and really take stock that it's not some rabid gargoyle at all. It’s a kitten. A little blue-eyed poofy bundle, crying desperately to be picked up. Cooing and calling me to adore its precious little fluffiness.
