I say vaguely. “Ah,” he says, his green eyes understanding. “The worst kind. Mine think I’m a charming failure. Yours?” “Think I’m a disappointing success,” I say before I can stop myself. He laughs, a rich, wonderful sound. “I like that. A disappointing success. There’s a poem in that.”

He stroked his chin. "Aha. Misery! " "Yes. Misery is the perfect phrase " " I want to see your darling husband in misery for the rest of his life. I want him to feel the pain of losing everything just like I did! " "Is that explanation enough? " "You lost everything because of your greediness and stupidity. And just like the coward you are, you can't even accept that you're a failure and now, you're looking for the perfect pawn to shift your misfortune to? "

Adrian pressed his hand over her mouth, kissing Liam’s damp forehead in anguish. Then, his gaze swung back to me, burning with contempt. "Lauren, I don’t even recognize you anymore. I’m so disappointed in you! Children don’t lie. And Liam is especially obedient. If this is how you treat him, how could you ever teach him? How could you ever remain my wife?" Each word landed like a nail, pinning me down as though I were a criminal, as though even my unborn child, who was already slipping away, were evidence against me.

I assured him with a smile. Pericles stares at me, trying to see through the smile that I am giving him. He doesn’t want to believe what I said. He thinks that behind this smile are the same emotions that he is feeling right now. All my words didn’t help in making him feel less bad. Not wanting to linger anymore in this upsetting topic, I started to speak about business to pull Pericles out of the miserable thoughts he had in his mind. I did not tell him all those things to have a pity party. I don’t like it if someone pities me, not just because someone pitying me wouldn’t make my problem any less bad nor my life any better, but because it drags me down to the pit of self despair.
