I didn't care who spoke. "There is only one pack that visits the Amethyst territory." Ian said, his body shifting slowly, preparing himself to engage in combat. That itself told me that I would not like the rest of his answer. My mind started listing the names of all our enemies, trying to figure out which one it could be. "The Howlers." He added, waiting for my reaction.

By then, we were surrounded. I don’t know how long we held them off. Long enough that my limbs burned and my lungs felt raw and I’d lost track of Amelia entirely, could only hear her somewhere behind me, snarling and yelping. The rogues closed in on us, snapping fangs dripping with hungry saliva, herding us together like a little snack. Suddenly, a low, guttural growl made even the rogues’ ears prick. Bastian appeared on the ridge above us, his wolf jet black and full of rage, eyes pure red, fur rippling in the breeze—every bit the Alpha the rogues clearly hadn’t expected to find.

—"I don’t obey anyone. Don’t give me orders, Bastien, or I’ll do the opposite. You know that." Bastien let out a defeated sigh. —"Then what do you want to do?" —"I’ll go with you. Because I want to. But I need to know something." —"Ask me." —"What do you actually do for a living?" Bastien tensed and looked away toward the cookies, grabbing one. —"That..." —"Tell me..." Bastien exhaled deeply. —"I traffic organs." Kate’s eyes widened. —"What?!" —"I don’t harm innocent people. I target criminals, murderers, rapists. I’ve never hurt someone innocent. For example, tomorrow we’re retrieving organs from a psychopath who murdered over twenty-two teenagers."

The Bastard Son walked through the narrow streets, testing reactions. A boy froze in the middle of the road, eyes wide. “You’re him,” he whispered. Lucia’s son stopped. “I am,” he said simply. The boy scurried to hide behind a cart. The whisper of his name followed him. Guerrero Valenti’s son. The Bastard. The blood. Lucia’s son did not flinch. He had expected recognition. Everywhere, men saw the Valenti blood in his jawline, his hands, the tilt of his shoulders.

I add, and he groans. “Your smart mouth is gonna get you into trouble one of these days,” I shrug at his comment. “I’m not half as bad as Remy, so that’s something.” He bends and picks me up effortlessly. Bastian is one skinny guy, but don’t be fooled by that, he is one of the strongest people here. He is swift on his feet, strong, lethal in combat, and a fast learner. I don’t know how he’s so skinny, because I thought working out meant building muscles, but oh well. His wolf isn’t all that big either, but it goes toe-to-toe with Remy and sometimes gets close to winning. It’s crazy. Outside of combat, though, Bastian is a nerd in every sense of the word. "Mila is making lasagna. I don't want to be late." He waved Bastien forward. "Come on, kid. Show me what you've got." Bastien stripped off his shirt. I sucked in a breath. His back was a ruin. A series of long, jagged scars ran from his shoulder to his hip—claw marks, deep and vicious. They looked recent, the skin angry and red. Bastien caught me staring. He offered a grim smile. "A souvenir from Adler. Before I escaped." He turned back to Dante, his expression hardening. "Should I shift?"

“Are you sure you don’t want to come with me, Ced?” Bastian and I have gotten a lot closer so when we’re in private, he calls me by my name. Or in this case, the nickname he gave me. “Bastian, I have a mate. I don’t care how attractive this woman is, I need to focus on finding my dragon.” “You’re loss. Kai: “Don’t the Maidens mate every few years, though? Why is she so attached to her mate when I know the Maidens do not keep mates?” Bastien: -chuckles sadly- “Because my sister has been barren; none of her mating partners has been able to impregnate her. Thomas was the only one and now she has her miracle child. I am sure you understand why she has done this, Kai, she has no choice as she is the future of her pack.” Kai: “Hmmm, I understand. Bastion delighted in being near Autumn, especially when she called him Basil. She noticed his pupils changed color, and he was sure she felt a deep affection for him. Autumn liked hearing his deep voice as he described his beautiful home, a place she wished she could at least visit someday. She doubted such a place existed on Earth, especially with all the turmoil around the globe, but she enjoyed dreaming about it with him. Bastion told her about his studies and how he became a botanist, someone who explores plants, when he’s not out protecting his environment.

They will do anything to get to keep their mates for themselves. But I won't leave my family for any man. The brown one completely shifts his behavior now. He starts gently licking my wound, poking me with his nose, but I'm not having this shit. I growl, my lips baring sharp canines, ordering him to step the hell away from me.
