Three black Mercedes sport car were spotted by each of the drivers of the Range Rover Jeeps coming from behind at full speed.

Tristan slammed his hand on the release lever. The airlock hissed open, and the roaring, freezing wind of the Emperor’s Highway slammed into them. **The Highway Battle** Stepping out onto the roof of the moving cargo cars was like stepping into a hurricane. The *Mammoth* was barreling down the thirty-foot-wide stone highway at seventy miles per hour. The wind shear tore at Tristan’s coat, threatening to rip him right off the edge and send him plummeting to the plains beneath. He dropped into a low crouch, his boots gripping the icy metal slats of the roof, and looked back.

The motors of the vehicles hummed alongside the hushed sounds of conversation as they rode together to their destination. The vehicles stopped in front of a building that seemed a little more ordinary than they’d expected. Outside, there was only a tall and hulking man, whose skin was tinged with the tipped-over neon light flooding right on him, making him look as if he were a bodybuilder.

He turned to the next camera. This highway was the one that led back to the city. He watched closely as the cars were stopped and searched. They were searching just as thoroughly, enough to satisfy him—but then something caught his attention. Just at the end of the line, a black car pulled up. Dominic had no idea who was driving; the windows were tinted. Every part of it was black, so no one could see inside. He looked closely at it. There was nothing exactly strange—other than the tint, of course.
