She glanced over her shoulder, studying me. “You’ve grown softer than you admit, Aziz. Your eyes give you away.”
“Stop poking your nose where it does not belong. I can see just fine,” I said, leaning in, “So stop prying and finish my order”
Her smirk widened, showing the glint of porcelain. “Still impatient. That hasn’t changed.”
She fetched a brass balance scale, its weights tarnished with age. Slowly, deliberately, she spooned the fine powder onto one pan, balancing it against small discs of iron. The grains shimmered faintly, blue at first, then darkening to ash.
