Suddenly, the book flipped open and the pages began to flutter back and forth. I stood up in shock, knocking my chair over as I did. The sound of the chair clattering against the floor broke Miriam from her thoughts. She grinned as she saw the book, laying open to a page labeled "Hybrids". "Miriam." I sputtered. "What was that? That book just moved and flipped pages on its own. That's not any kind of fae magic I've ever seen." She looked at me, amusement in her eyes. "I told you, it's my book, it responds to me. I'm spirit fae, and while I may not know much about what that means, I do know that I have a connection to dark magic."

I have watched the light in you begin to flicker. It started on your thirtieth birthday. You didn't run as hard. You stumbled on the third step, catching yourself with a hand that felt brittle. “There lived a little firefly named Flicker. Flicker loved to play hide-and-seek with the moon, but he was always the first to be found. His light was so bright, it lit up the entire night sky! One night, Flicker was feeling sad. He wished he could be as good at hiding as his friends, the little owls. He flew to the wise old owl, Hoot, and asked for advice. Hoot chuckled and said, "Flicker, your light is your strength, not your weakness. Use it to your advantage!" Flicker thought about Hoot's words. He flew to a dark corner of the forest and used his light to create shadows, hiding himself behind them. The moon couldn't find him! He was finally a good hider!

"Time of Darkness, excellent choice." She had a calm voice say from behind her and she almost jumped in her skin. She should have been used to this by now.
