Ryder/Reign Owen sits lazily across from me in the living room couch, his leg bouncing like he owns the damn place even though he knows he doesn’t. The maid pours a glass of whiskey beside him, and he doesn’t even look up, just grabs it and swirls it like he’s thinking deep thoughts. He never is. He takes a sip and gives me that look he always gives right before he dumps whatever crap he’s been holding in. “Your place still smells like you,” he mutters, stretching his arms behind his head like he’s about to fall asleep.

What's surprising to me really, is that Owen actually showed up to help me pack. I don't understand this man. Most of the time, he acts like he’s a scientist and I’m a specimen he needs to study under a microscope. Other times, he treats me like a plague he’s forced to tolerate for the sake of some game. But as long as he’s literally helping me pry my life back from his nephew’s cold, greedy fingers, I don’t mind the mood swings. Owen doesn't answer right away. He just nods, his eyes roving over the bookshelf, the mismatched cushions, and the thrifted floor lamp. "I like your choice of design, though. It’s... homely. It feels like someone actually lives here."

His fingers fondled as his cellphone buzzed, a reply from him, “Open the door!” ‘What!’ he jumped, throwing his mobile aside at the corner of his bed, and went straight to the door. He looked from the small gap in the door, it precisely was him outside which made him jump in excitement. His hands trembled as he turned the four knobs. With a shy smile, he opened the four, which turned into a broad smile. Owen stood there with a box of fried chicken in his hand and a book in the other hand. He greeted with a gentle smile on his indifferent face, “Evening, Ryan! Hope I haven’t disturbed you, do I?”

Oh fu*ck! After waiting for an hour, and my day went unproductive, the paperback finally come. They sent me a several copy of the book. Are kidding me? They print it perfectly with an interesting cover. This makes my irritation flared up even worse. Tsk! "Call Mr. Owen.” My assistant immediately took an action. She handed me the phone and Mr. Owen is on the line. This past month he often accepted my calls. He never rejects it, but he set aside and never call me back. I need to send my men to scare him and received my audience. And now… He is being nice. Why? It is obvious, he is pleased with the manuscript that I don’t own. I steal it and it is my pride that hurt badly.

"Ocean?" "What?" Owen stopped and stared out the window at the churning water. "No! I'm not going to kill him. I'm throwing it in the closet for the higher paid people, let them sort it out.” He trailed off, thinking. How many corpses are there now? Shaking his head, he continued to drag the wolf. “I swear it's getting like Sweeney Todd in here.” Owen dragged the dead weight off the bookshelves and out of the room. It was well after noon, but the bar was empty. Complete silence. Where did everyone go? And then I felt it. I attributed the pressure in my head to being hit on the floor several times, but that only explained most of it.

“Mysterious. Let me guess, beautiful, guarded, and makes you question your entire life?” “Close enough.” I nodded “Ha! You’re in serious trouble.” I shot him a warning glare, wondering why his mouth always had to be open. “You talk too much.” “Admit it,” Owen continued, not minding my glare. “We’re both stuck on women who don’t want us. Just how poetic is that?” I snickered, his words sounding more and more gibberish. “Poetic, or pathetic. Depends on how you frame it.”

“You told him just like that? You didn't tell him why? You just pushed him away?” “He knows why. I am not ready to love any man, Mary. My heart is not prepared for another slaughter.” “But, Stephanie... How sure are you that he is going to do the same thing Owen did to you? Maybe he isn't like the others. He has been so nice to our family.” “Owen was nice to our family too, Mary. I said the same thing about him too, that he isn't like the others. Now, look at me... I'm suffering from that mistake.”

It felt like he was caressing her slowly along her spine every time he spoke near her. “Regina.” She could feel the hair on her neck rise as Owen hunkered down beside her to hand over the book he was reading. “It’s your turn to read the chapter,” He said with a sly smile appearing on his face. She had been listening to Owen read aloud the story of two lovers as they flirted with each other, reminding her how they used to be. Regina frowned at Owen questioningly. He seldom handed her the books they read because he wanted to have an excuse to stay with his mother, but as she skimmed the new chapter, she realized Owen wanted her to read the sex scenes out loud.

Professor Naomi finished, widening her smile. “Okay. Okay. But he should not go around causing trouble because of her.” “Mr. Owen, am I missing something?” I asked, a smile spreading across my mouth, my body attached to Mia as if we were newly married. The warmth made me think clearly, and her smell made me feel fresh. And thank God, she did not move. She just let me stay there. “Are you trying to...” “No. You are overthinking things, Mr. Hayes.” Owen sat down in his chair. His eyes now avoided mine.
