It felt wrong leaving him there alone. But eventually, I forced myself backward. The small flame in my hand flickered weakly. I stared at it through blurry tears. “I’ll protect our son,” I whispered shakily. “I promise.” The fire touched the wood. At first, the flames burned slowly. Then they spread. The heat rose around me while smoke curled into the morning sky.
