Even the smallest understood: promises cost heat. A farmer brought his daughter ten at most. When her hand met the fire, it flared bright. The crowd moved like a tide each oath lighting another. Across the plains, other villages mirrored us; their fires answered ours. Hills glowed. Rivers threw light back to the stars. From every horizon, wolves howled once, broken and defiant; tonight, whole. Not grief promise.

He glared at my face while giving me a stupid smug grin. “You love playing with fire right? This fire is not just going to burn you, it's going to devour you.” I promised darkly while meeting his stare with one of my own. “Oh little one, you're really clueless, aren't you? You've forgotten that I make the fire, I produce them which means I won't get burnt. I will make you beg for me.
