He stood behind me with one arm raised, and his eyes stared blankly ahead. I didn’t understand what was happening, but Marcus and Ronan didn’t hesitate. Marcus jumped the other vampire and pushed Lord Theo to the ground. “Give him another order,” Marcus told me. “Drop the whip,” I said, and Joachim’s hand spasmed open. The whip fell to the ground. “I think we found your vampiric power,” Ronan said. “Great timing, Clara.” “I don’t understand,” I said. “You have a vampire power,” Marcus said, from where he had wrestled Theo onto his stomach and was working to hold him still. “I’d say command voice. Use it on this one, would you? He’s strong.”

Of course a big fight was going to ensue with Sampson and Odessa winning and living happily ever after. Eryx pulled away from the hug, wiped her tears, and kissed her forehead gently. “I know it’s hard, but Mom, I’m not into girls. I hope you understand. Sam yelled at me, making me shut my mouth immediately. "Now, talk without screaming." She said calmly as she placed her hands on her hips. "Look at these." I said as I showed her the pimples on my right cheek. She gasped and covered her mouth with her hands. "Holy shit! I don't blame you for screaming, I would freak out if I saw this on my face too." Sam said as she looked at the pimples on my face closely.

Then— A voice. Soft. Distorted. “…Belle…” My blood turned to ice. Ethan froze. Mason looked terrified. The voice continued beneath the static. “…you left me…” I stood up too quickly. “No.” The voice sounded like Luke. Almost. But not completely. Like someone wearing his voice instead of speaking with it. The notebook slipped from my lap and hit the floor. The TV screen flickered violently. For one horrifying second— A face appeared inside the static.

Nothing came out. No sound. No voice. Just silence. His head tilted slightly, and I could feel his eyes on me through the mask. "Go ahead," he said softly. "Scream." I tried again. Tried to force sound from my throat. Nothing. "No?" His voice carried a dark edge of amusement. "Nothing at all?" Tears burned in my eyes. He leaned forward, placing both hands on the bed on either side of my legs. Caging me. "So quiet," he murmured. "So helpless."

“You were never meant to be alone.” I squeeze my eyes shut. “You’re not real.” But the voice doesn’t stop. It becomes a chorus. The water around my skiff ripples, faces forming beneath the surface. It shows me all of the people I’ve lost, people I’ve failed. My pack. My father. My mother. Garrin. And still I row. Silen’s voice cuts through the whispers. “Don’t listen!” I look up. His skiff glides a few yards away, his expression tight. The water glows brighter under him. “It feeds on memory!” he calls. “Keep your thoughts quiet.”

He opened his mouth to roar, to call his guards to kill me, to scream his defiance at the sky. But nothing came out. Damon’s mouth moved, his throat worked, his chest heaved with effort, but the only sound was the whistling of the wind. I hadn't just silenced him; I had stripped the "concept" of his voice from his body. I had reached into the atoms of his vocal cords and rewritten them into silence.
