The wave shot up through the bedrock of the castle, tearing out through the heavy timber doors and exploding into the highland atmosphere.
Miles away, at the eastern threshold, the low, oily fog was instantly obliterated. The purplish-blue light swept across the valleys, illuminating the dark pine forests with the brilliant, blinding clarity of a thousand midsummer suns.
Deep within the ravines, the remaining hundreds of the blood-born horde—along with their new, sovereign-fed leader—were waiting in the shadows, plotting their tactical, patient ambush. The leader had been smiling, his unhinged jaw clicking with anticipation as he prepared to drive his monsters through the breaking storm.
