I run to the window, laying my palms on the cool glass and looking out at the city beyond. I have to get out of here.

The scent of the food is still in the air, like a memory of a kindness that was turned into an act of power. I walk to the window because windows are always small rebellions. The glass is thick and the bars outside are a promise. I close my eyes and let my mind do the thing it does best, which is to drag me back where I do not want to go. The memory unfurls like smoke.

“Whatever you think you are, just know that I consider you as nothing of it.” I walked away not looking back. — The window to my bedroom was wide open letting in winds that blew the curtains high. Sky looked exceptionally beautiful today. I had high hopes for rain. I needed rain. I wanted the sky to cry with me because my sorrows just can not end soon.

I want to go back to my room. When entering the room, I locked my bedroom door tight and walked towards the window. I took a harsh breath of oxygen as if I didn't want to share it with anyone else. My chest was tight from running, and my wounds were stinging even more. But I can still hold on well. My eyes swept the view of the twilight outside of my window. The hills are visible, and the orange sky is also perfectly painted. The sun is almost half set. "I didn't do anything really, anyone who heard me. Trust me," I shouted.

My heartbeat quickened instantly. I muttered to myself. "Seriously?" But that was the way I walked closer and pulled the curtains open sunlight flooded in making me squint slightly. I slowly opened the window and the outside air hit my face. I swallowed it high if I felt it would not end well. But I did not have a choice. I grabbed the edge of the glass panel and carefully tried to remove it. My hands trembled for a second but I forced myself to focus. "Focus!" With some effort I finally managed to loosen one side of the glass. I set it aside carefully now the opening was just wide enough for me to get through.

Outside my window, the wind rattled through the trees; a low, mournful sound that almost made me laugh. I leaned closer to the glass, pressing my forehead against the chill. “Goodnight, sweet sister,” I whispered to the dark. “Dream while you can.”

My gaze settled on the window! I dragged the trash bin closer and flipped it. It wobbled under my weight, but I braced myself against the cold wall. The window was narrow and painted shut. I pushed. Nothing. I shoved harder. Creak. The frame popped open just wide enough for me to squeeze through. I dropped onto a bed of gravel and swallowed a scream. Catching my breath, I pushed myself to my feet and limped my way around the property, toward the main road. My phone vibrated with another text.

he ordered rolling the window. As much as I was uncomfortable with the man’s presence, I moved my gaze to the windows looking at the streets then I heard the ringing of a phone as the man next to me swiftly picked the call and I heard him say to the person on the other end. ‘Mmmm okay, make it quick.’ The driver returned with a shopping bag in his hands and he turned around to pass the bag to me through the window.

There isn’t even anything I can lean against. After taking another deep breath before releasing it, I brace myself for the pain and start hobbling. It goes slowly, painfully slowly, and I have tears streaming down my cheeks by the time I get there. But I get there, which is the most important thing, I tell myself as I open the curtain and quietly pull up the blind. Once I have the window open, I perch on the windowsill and lean out a little just to gauge how big of a drop it’s going to be.

All of this—every bit of it—was part of something else. I took another slow sip, letting the wine warm my throat. The city lights outside flickered through the glass, soft and hazy. I turned my head toward the window, watching the cars move below. “They all buy it,” I said under my breath. “Every single one of them.”
