In the calm quiet of the night, my traitorous heart had fallen some more. And then we’d discussed the wolf I’d found that morning. It had stayed with me, lurking in the back of my mind as the first Warrior Wolf we’d found had. There was something so coarse about seeing a body not upon a battlefield. Although, I supposed, it was a different kind of battle. A darker one that played out with no honour.

I had never felt fear like that in my life, but in that moment, it gripped my heart like an icy fist. The luxurious gym, with its state-of-the-art equipment and panoramic views of the city, feels suffocating. I should have known better than to let anyone close, to allow myself to feel. Andrea’s vibrant smile and warm eyes haunt me, a stark contrast to the broken, bloodied form I had cradled in my arms. I turn back to the punching bag, my resolve hardening. I will make Vladimir pay for what he’s done and never again make the mistake of opening my heart. The price is too high, and Andrea is paying it with her life.

I tried to touch his cheek but he slapped my hand away making me tear up. He placed my hand on his heart "Do you know how much hurt you have caused this?" he pointed to his heart. He chuckled "Of course you wouldn't know as you are too busy letting other men in between your legs" he spat with disgust. I stood there too shocked to say anything.

Alma added. He shook his head. "I won't let her regret it ma'am. I'm going to work hard and prove that I have no bad intentions towards the lady." Alma nodded and showed her to her room. While going out of the house, he heard a yell. He felt pain in his heart like he was stung by a bee. It's happening to him again. Not knowing who it was, he followed the direction of the noise and it happens to be Eva's room. He wondered what happened to her? In order to avoid getting into trouble on the first day of his job, he decided to leave. He doesn't understand why he felt pain when she yelled. What could be the explanation for feeling pain everytime without understanding where it's coming from?

I held the beating heart in the face of the remaining warrior who looked like he was about to piss his pants. “This will be how your heart will end up if you don’t find her and bring her to me,” I said curtly. The warrior shivered and I scoffed. They call themselves werewolves but they are weak and pathetic. “Y-yes Alpha!” The warrior whose name I don’t even know scurried out of the room like his tail was on fire. I crushed the heart in my hand and threw it on top of the dead body on the ground. “Master, do not despair. If she’s missing, it means she’s alive. We can just find her.” Brianna’s voice came and the steam coming out of my ears eased a little.

“What?” “My backstory.” Oh. That. I hesitated. “Only if you want to tell me.” She didn’t. Instead, she said, “Your warriors are soft.” “Excuse me?” “Emotionally. They fight like people who haven’t decided if they’re allowed to win.” I frowned. “That’s not softness. That’s trauma.” “Same difference in a war.” Her voice wasn’t cruel. Just matter-of-fact. Like someone who’d already watched this play out in a dozen other packs, and she was just skipping to the end where things got bloody.

ALAANA POV I stood in the field where the warriors were. My heart was beating loudly, drowning out the sound of drums. I had been waiting impatiently for me to see William since the day they went to the battlefield. When the first line of fighters appeared, cheers rose. Their weapons shattered, their spears raised, their clothes stained with sweat and dirt and blood, but they marched with their heads held high. They were home. They were heroes. My lump was in my throat. I ignored the pain I had felt on my knees as my leg hit the rocks and trees as I was busy, looking around with hopeful eyes. I knew every warrior by name, even those I had never spoken to. But only the warrior's face mattered
