We don’t speak much and it’s when I lay in Alejandro’s arms later, letting the weight and warmth of his strong body lull me to sleep. I am not a coward, I’ve never been. As the next days go by, I pretend everything’s back to normal, that there’s no doom and gloom waiting for me behind the corner. I show up and do my job, and then fall asleep like nothing happened. I could see the tears welling up in her eyes. "Aura, the book isn't saying you will lose these pups." I gently put my hand on her belly. "The book was talking about the others you lost." I felt my heart break remembering the photos I had found, showing the torture my guards put her through.

She waited like everyone else for an explanation. “When the lights went out like that, I felt like I was back in the dragon’s lair. I felt like I was trapped inside a cage again, granted, this time a very hi-tech bookish prison.” He looked from face to face and continued, “I felt panic, dread, full fight or flight terror. I sent the book back to the safest place I could think of, and got us the hell out too.” “Where is this safe place?” Luca questioned, anxious lines forming on his brow. “It needs to be weather protected.”

I recoiled to the bed, leaning against the pillows as his words resonated in my head. A part of me shrieked in excitement, while fear and anxiety got the best part of me. Asael was a man of mercy. He was the monster all monsters were afraid of. Could I trust him?

Ready felt like walking into a storm without an umbrella, knowing the lightning was aimed straight at my chest. The sedan came to a stop in front of a sleek, black building. Its windows were tinted, reflecting the city around it like dark mirrors. The kind of place that could swallow someone whole if they weren’t careful. Abbas turned to me, his gaze softening for the briefest second. “Remember what I said. Fear is what they want. Confidence is the only armor you’ll carry. And trust—only in yourself.”

Serena I closed the door and leaned against it, the book heavy in my hands, and my body shook from exhaustion and fear.
