Richard glanced at me, with an arced brow. Adrian gave me a cursory look, "Of course, he knows everybody on earth." He answered. "Hey now, that's not true." I replied and poured myself some drink. "I don't even know who Megan McKenzie is." I murmured but I was sure they heard me because they both snapped their attention to me at the same time. "What?" "You don't know who she is?" Adrian asked, placing his glass on the table. I shook my head, frowning. "No. I wouldn't ask if I knew." I answered.

I say quietly. "Hey, Mikey, what's shaking?" He smirks. His face is all kinds of evil. Adrian was border until he got some on his team killed during a rogue attack. Turned out he sold them out for cash. He was kicked from border and disappeared. Me and him were thick as thieves before then and remained in contact from time to time. Yeah, I have shitbag friends, but I never said I was perfect. These kind of friends are quite handy when you need a mess cleaned up.

She eventually blended in with the rest of them. They came in for loaves, for pies, for the sweet honey twists she had once made for Sophia on her birthday. They smiled at her. She did not smile back. But she listened. Always. They gossiped while they waited in line. “Adrian’s pack is opening a new route north—past the high pass. He’s preparing checkpoints all the way from the north to the south.” “He’s putting guards there, too. Says they’re hunting some rogue bitch who tried to kill his mistress. “Kindly wait here.” I turned my head to look at Adrian, noticing the sudden tightness around his jawline and the way his knuckles clamped against his pockets. “I can handle an old man,” I whispered to him, my voice carrying a sharp edge. “He isn’t just an old man,” Adrian said, his voice dropping so low the coordinator couldn’t hear. “Don’t let him back you into a corner, Meghan.” I didn’t answer him. I walked past the gray suit and pushed the heavy, dark wood doors open, stepping into a library lined with thousands of leather books that stretched all the way to the high ceiling.

I snatched the history book from the desk and shoved it toward him. “Open it. Page one. And keep your mouth shut before I reconsider this deal.” “Okay, Bookie. So serious.” Adrian sprawled across the table, flipping through the book with exaggerated boredom. “Alright, genius,” he said. “Tell me which of these dead guys I have to memorize to pass.”

“I told you already that I don’t mind dying.” “Well, I do,” he says and pushes away from the table. “Monty stole some books for you-” he wipes his clean mouth on a napkin and stands up -“they’re in the living room.” I’m not sure how I feel about stolen books. “Doesn’t his stealing bother you?” Adrian shrugs while he gathers the dishes and takes them to the sink. “I’m not the one doing it.” “But you’re not telling him to stop. He’s clearly taking your lead, and-”

It made sense to him that Adrian had lost his mind and had murdered these innocent families, those children. “Okay look at these. I found them in my father’s house after his funeral,” Adrian said and handed Robert three old books, bound in leather. Robert opened the first book and began to read. It held accounts of wolf sightings, transformation ceremonies, councils, people with powers, how to kill a wolf and much more. There were detailed drawings and Robert could tell by the faded ink that the books were old indeed. Adrian knew the truth.
