I finished Episode twelve, and when a particular character pissed me off, I turned it off and went to read something in the study. There were some fiction books, but primarily old books from Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and Herman Melville. There were self-help and meditation books and a book about mystical creatures. I walked out of the study. If she allowed me to read a book about witchcraft, it might interest me, but that would be as dangerous as walking into the darkness without

I’m hungry.” After we were done eating, Darius gave me a few more protein bars and water bottles before bidding me goodbye with a promise to return soon. For the rest of the day, I crawled and followed the sunlight with a book in my hand that Darius brought the first night. It was about a girl surviving in a foreign land, much similar to me. I could see why he chose the particular book for me and for some reason, I found it funny.

I squeak at the end. Damn it. He’s caught me by surprise, and it’s making me nervous. “Smut isn’t what I had in mind.” “It’s just a romance novel, Daddy.” I knew the cigarettes would get me in trouble, but I’m surprised he’s harping on the book. He’s always got his nose in a book—sometimes some classic, since he’s a lit professor, but just as likely a thriller, and he knows I love a good romance as much as he loves a good save-the-world-from-the-bad-guys adventure.

Not from outside this time, but from inside me. Darius said something sharp and urgent. I felt my knees start to give and there was nothing I could do about it, absolutely nothing, and the last thing I was aware of before the dark came down was the man almost touching me.
