I can't remember how long I lost consciousness, but when I woke up. I only opened my eyes in hell.

“You both are my children who have endured tremendous pain, but rise from the fall like real leaders. You promise me that whatever happens, you protect each other.” I smile at her and Danya. “I promise, Mom.” “You have my word, Mary,” Danya says, squeezing her hand. “But we still have a problem.” “What?” Alek groans at her. “If it’s about that thing, it’s been taken care of.” “Wait. Kirk is dead?” Mom suddenly asks, and finally it’s sinking in. “Yes. He died, suffocated inside his burning diner, Mary,” Alek says, making me and Danya share a look. “There’s nothing much left to retrieve but ashes.”

“Okay.” The diner sat just off the main road, easy to miss unless you knew where to look. Flower boxes framed the windows, the booths creaked, and handwritten specials hung behind the counter. It didn’t expect anything from anyone. The bell chimed as we walked in, and the woman behind the counter lit up immediately. “Dean!” “Morning, Mrs. Alvarez.” “Your usual?” “Please.” She turned to me with a warm smile. “And your friend?” The word landed somewhere unfamiliar but not unwelcome. Dean glanced at me. “What are you getting?”

The diner was in the middle of nowhere on a dusty little road. Aaron parked his Monster next to Keyah’s Prius in the empty parking lot, next to the diner. The diner was a small, rectangular building with a large neon sign hanging above the door. ‘Desert Diner’, the glowing pink and green sign read. Quite a few letters in the sign flickered feebly, as if they’d stop glowing any second.

We found only two options, a smoky barbecue food truck warmed by drunk college kids. And a rundown 24-hour diner with a flickering neon sign. I chose the diner. The smell of coffee and greasy fries was surprisingly comforting after the night I'd had. Pulling out my phone, I texted Camille my location, figuring she might be starving too, and ordered an extra bacon cheeseburger and fries for her. As I slid the phone back into my pocket, Alpha Adrian gave me a knowing smile. At least you still have a conscience, huh? I blinked, my mind catching up. Oh, do you like bacon cheeseburgers? Alpha.

But in the very normal environment here, I didn't think it would be another world. "I'm sorry for not telling you about it back then. So, in order to get back to you. Today I will welcome you to Afterlife Inn." I didn't know that there was anything more surprising besides the contract he gave. I couldn't believe it as I looked around. Saint called this place Afterlife Inn. It was the literal meaning of course! Damn! Is this what they call purgatory? "Saint is this purgatory?" It was there that Saint stopped attending to me and from staring at the cutlery he looked up again at me. When our eyes met it was there that he spoke.

By the time I get grounds maintenance cleared and get my guys re-educated, it’s almost noon, blistering hot and I’m dying of thirst. I’m closer to city center than I am to the packhouse, so I decide to drop in at Darla and Joe’s. It’s a cute little mom-and-pop diner run by a couple of empty-nest weres and makes the best raspberry lemonade in the entire state. I wave to a couple of folks who greet me on the plaza and hold the door with my best lady-killer smile for a nasty little blonde I’m exceptionally familiar with who gives me the eye and looks like she might be my lunch. I’m following her ass into the diner and admiring the view when the most amazing smell in existence hits me.

"Judge Reynolds will be at Millie's Diner in an hour. We should go." They left the apartment cautiously, Sarah borrowing sunglasses and a baseball cap from the closet. Diego had acquired both a new shirt and a handgun during the night; Sarah decided not to ask how. The diner sat on a quiet corner in Queens, its neon sign flickering halfheartedly in the morning light. Inside, the smell of coffee and bacon wrapped around them like a comforting blanket. Sarah scanned the booths until she spotted an elderly man in the corner, newspaper spread before him, coffee cooling untouched.

"I've avenged you, Queenie." I closed my eyes and saw Queenie's smile. It was wider and brighter than before. My best friend waved at me and slowly faded from my mind. A moment of hesitation later, Felix said, "This is finally over, but your life isn't. You still have a long life ahead of you. You can live with your head held high now. You don't have to hide yourself anymore. You can have a peaceful, happy life." He gave me an earnest look. "My father would like you to come over and have dinner with us to celebrate a new lease on life for you."

She looked worried, but deep down, Annalise didn't want to keep retelling her story. "It's okay. I am okay. I'll go wash my face then I'll be ready to meet my Bestie's family." Etta squealed in delight. "We'll go down for dinner. Nothing formal" Etta tugged on Annalise's arm, taking her with her off the bed and towards the door.
