Grimm lifts his eyes to the ravens, taking control before Dagar can. I waste no time. Rising from my seat, I drive a dagger straight into Dagar’s chest. He stares at me, bewildered, as if the act itself were an insult. “I refuse to believe you are this foolish,” he sneers. “Have you learned nothing?” Pulling the dagger free, I press my palm—seed and all—against the wound, just as Hilda once did. The ancient words spill from me, echoing through the chamber: “Arieta matra sorte ni malefica. Razaga yote mica lorte! Arieta matra sorte ni malefica. Razaga yote mica lorte! Arieta matra sorte ni malefica. Razaga yote…”

“B-But they must not all be like that, there must be some who…” “I’ve never heard of a single rogue that hasn’t suffered the same fate, and I only know of one who survived it,” Lucian interjected coldly. “Her name is Jocelyn, and she only came out the other side because she found my brother Jace… they’re fated mates, but not before killing hundreds of our own and putting my mother in a fucking coma.”

Legend has it that Athena emerged from Lake Gayank—born of its mystical waters—and even as a child, her power was unmatched. Her story intertwined with that of Prince Lucius, a banished royal from Decresh. King Baeon had deemed him weak and unworthy, unable to generate energy like the other royals. Cast out and disgraced, Lucius wandered until he met Athena. She took him under her wing, becoming both his master and his source of power. Athena allowed him to draw energy directly from her, which ultimately linked him to the lake itself. This bond transformed him into a force no one could stand against.

He stood and offered me his hand. The sensation I felt as my skin touched his, was electric. It felt like every inch of my body was alive, hairs were standing up on the back of neck. The warmth from his touch filled my body. He moved my hand onto his arm as we took some steps off the veranda side. At the bottom of the stairs was a small path to a hedgerow with a small gate. He opened the gate and gestured me through, first. On the other side was an unbelievable site. The gardens seemed never ending in the lowing sunlight, paths curved in and out of flower beds and arches. Small lights began to turn on along the path sides with the sun lowering. It was like nothing I had ever seen before, jus
