“You walk in. I’m right outside with the team. Wire. Full tactical. The second anything feels wrong, we extract.”
I nod.
Twenty minutes later I’m in black leggings and an oversized hoodie, Kevlar vest carefully strapped beneath, custom-fitted weeks ago when threats were still theoretical. Alexander adjusts the straps himself, hands shaking slightly.
He presses his forehead to mine in the elevator.
“I can’t lose you,” he whispers. “Either of you.”
“You won’t.”
The warehouse is abandoned, rusted metal and broken windows, the Bay lapping black and cold against the pilings. Alexander’s team is shadows, snipers on adjacent roofs, drones overhead, every exit covered.
