The shimmer of the ward seemed to buckle under the assault, and gasps of concern rippled amongst the soldiers and guards.

The shadows froze for a few seconds as if considering their next move, but then they cascaded downwards as one, pounding against the barrier, and for a moment, the shimmer flared like it might rip open.
